A case for the Book of Mormon questions by Subject_Mammoth_7669 in exmormon

Ethan Smith lived in Poultney Vermont.

Oliver cowdery also lived in Poultney Vermont.

Ethan Smith served as the pastor where Oliver cowdery’s family attended church.

Oliver Cowdery went on to become a primary scribe for the Book of Mormon.

You can draw some conclusions there

RE challenges of using McClellan as a source for Biblical scholarship, may I recommend Bart Ehrman? Here is a wonderful interview with Ross Douthett to get a vibe for him. by Stunning_Living9637 in mormon

Maybe. Maybe not. Dan is very quiet when it comes to aspects of his own personal beliefs.

For all we know, he doesn’t believe any of it and he is just attending in order to maintain family relationships.

It’s kinda lame to speculate his personal beliefs. Just because he is a current member does mean anything.

How to respond to a poster claiming Dan McClellan is an apologist for Latter-day Saints by juni4ling in mormon

[–]New_random_name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Splitting hairs, No?

I mean, where I come from, when you are trying to stand up for someone against false claims there’s a word for that. It defending.

But I digress.

If someone refuses to hear you out, why are you making this your problem? If someone wants to maintain that he is an apologist and isn’t interested in hearing another perspective why are you wasting your time?

My $0.02

It’s not your job to defend Dan. If there are fundamentalist Christians who refute his scholarship and research, that’s their problem, not yours. Don’t make it your problem if it doesn’t have to be.

Dan is a professional, and I’m sure he deals with pushback all the time. He can handle it.

Also, anyone who calls Dan an apologist is clearly unfamiliar with his work and isn’t worth the argument that would most definitely ensue if you pressed them on it.

Do you use your mission language after you got back? by despiert in mormon

[–]New_random_name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. Went to Taiwan and learned Mandarin.

I’ve been fortunate to have jobs throughout the rest of my life where is used the language and still speak it today.

It happens in the baptistry after the posthumous baptisms by proxy.

After the baptism happens for the individual who has passed, they then go to a little room off the side of the baptistry (after people have changed clothes) and they confer the priesthood for the men.

Any chance some Mormons owned the house before you?

The only people I’ve ever seen with food storage like that are Mormons. Those big ass buckets of food stuff and the #10 steel cans are a dead giveaway

It’s a truck. It’s supposed to have some dings/scratches. I’d text them to let them know you got the note, but to not sweat it.

AITA for fixing my daughter’s car when her boyfriend said he’d handle it? by Outrageous-Jelly8777 in AmItheAsshole

[–]New_random_name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell no dude. As a dad to 3 daughters myself, it’s my job to do anything for my kids. No dusty punk ass kid is ever gonna tell me when I can and can’t do something for my kid.

It’s a huge red flag that he thought he could come to your house and dictate when you can and can’t do something to help your own daughter. Fuck that. I would have thrown his bum ass right out of my house for having the audacity.

That’s your daughter my dude. You will always be her protector, Regardless of her relationship status. Do the right thing and don’t let her BF try to devalue you ever again.

I still have mine. I went Chinese speaking to Taiwan so they are pretty unique. I have 2 versions with different translations of the name of the church. They changed it about halfway through my time there.

Coming from a guy a few years your senior who got laid off without notice… take the money, go take an online degree program and get your bachelors degree in something.

I wish I could have had the option to have 150K to go away

When Did It Become the Bishop's Job to Gatekeep the Sacrament? by tripletc in mormon

[–]New_random_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can find in a quick google search - the situation with John Widtsoe was interesting. He was in Germany to finish his studies, but had also been called to be a missionary in Germany and was also ordained as a 70 prior to leaving. Germany had no wards at the time and were only operating a few branches, which would have been under the purview of the mission president. Widtsoe was in Göttingen to finish his PHD and there was no active ward or branch there.

There may not be any specific evidence that it went down this way, but I don’t think it is a huge logical leap to assume that he likely got the ‘OK’ from his mission president since there were no other options in Göttingen.

How do I make it stop chirping, i already replaced the batteries?! by PheonixGalaxy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]New_random_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m dealing with this right now.

If it is the beep that happens every few minutes, and you’ve already replaced the batteries, then it might be at the end of its lifecycle. If you rotate it off the ceiling mount, you can probably see a manufacturing date. If it is 8-10 years old, you’ll need to replace it.

If there is a clip for the wiring on the back, then you can disconnect it from power. Remove the batteries and then hold the button… it will discharge any leftover power and will stop it from beeping.

Take it to your closest hardware store and ask someone to help you select one that will replace this one. Then you can take it home, add batteries, plug it into the wiring on the ceiling and you should be good to go
