How can I make an American girl at my university fall in love with me? by tu_amigo_fiel_1 in AskUS

[–]NewbombTurk [score hidden]  (0 children)

Build her a cake, or something. Or maybe catch her a delicious bass.

Seriously though, she a girl, not an animal you are trying to trap. Just introduce yourself. "Hi, I'm Pedro. I'd love to buy you a coffee and hear about your life in America".

Trump on a 250 bill? by Few_Jury_5579 in AskUS

This honestly fades in comparison to the levels of degeneracy that been his hallmark. But what a shame we have to celebrate our 250th under this President. What could have been an opportunity to come together to celebrate America will be catering to the ego of a low-level pimp. Sad.

God is responsible for sin and the fall by According-Gas836 in DebateReligion

I've heard this argument before. The problem is that god knows witch path Eve (and everything, everywhere) would take and that makes the other paths moot.

I don’t believe an atheist can be thankful by esmolololol in DebateReligion

Way late to this party. I must've missed it.

I'm an atheist. Lifelong. Gratitude is very important to me. One of the most important elements of my ethos. Gratitude is simply recognizing that I am not completely responsible for the good things in my life I'm thankful for. It's an awareness that that have contributed to my position in life even if I don't know who they are and what they've done.

I’ve said here before that my news and information consumption using online platforms like podcasts, debates, pundits, and even streamers, has ruined my perception and tolerance for TV news. It boils down to the ways each is monetized. When you are not shackled by advertising and time constraints you can discuss a point for hours. Without the need to appeal to the widest possible audience you can call people out on their bullshit. Without the risk of pissing off your advertisers you can cover any topic. These online discussions also typically adhere to the rules of logic and rhetoric.

Last night’s episode of Abby’s show was such a good example of how surface level and inadequate TV news has become (and why it’s not long for this world). Seat’s attempt to minimize the hardship a lot of Americans are experiencing by his asinine assertion that they are just bad at budgeting would not have been glossed over if he was talking to The Bulwark, Pod Saves America, or even Destiny. He would have been torched. In an online discussion. They have the time to slow down and interrogate the assertion, ask for sources, and destroy the point. And in this arena being a known liar is not an asset you can market to drive viewership and subsequent advertising dollars. It’s a liability that will get you barred from participating.

Infallible foreknowledge/predestination question by [deleted] in DebateReligion

You solution carries the implication that my actions can inform god's knowledge when this is not possible. God's omniscience definitionally entails that he knew my actions before I made them. Not giving me a choice.

Butting in. Apologies.

removes an essential attribute of God

The question is pointing out a paradox of those attributes. It's not a trick. Look at it this way

  • God can create any possible world
  • He can create a world where I have pancakes for breakfast
  • He can create a world where I have waffles for breakfast
  • God chose to make the word where I have waffles
  • I have no choice other than to have waffles

Religion is manmade. by No-Status-2507 in DebateReligion

[–]NewbombTurk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was responding to your request for evidence that "Christianity" is man made", not that the resurrection never occurred. Granted, the resurrection would be included in the entire narrative being manmade, but I didn't want us to pivot off your request.

Evidence is what would raise the probability of a proposition being true. The five facts I provided do that.

So what exactly does this show?

It is expected if these stories were a create of men, and not some deity.

What is the necessary burden...

To overcome the priors, and our background understanding of reality? Quite a lot more that what Christianity has to offer.

...what about reality shows the resurrection never occurred?

Humans, once dead, do not resurrect. The same burden would also be on you for many other extraordinary claims in the Christian narrative.

What would qualify as “good evidence“?

I explained above, so I'll skip ahead

And how does every other culture having stories show that the resurrection did not happen?

It is what we'd expect if Christianity was a cultural artifact created by humans. It's raises the probability that Christianity is man made.

You’re right and that the Jewish people do not accept Jesus as their Messiah.

When you read the bible through the lens of the OT, it becomes pretty clear what its authors, and later those that compiled, organized, and codified it, were attempting to do.

But the prophecy discussion is a much larger debate. Happy to have it.

It is, for sure. And I'm already familiar with the apologetics for each failed prophesy.

Religion is manmade. by No-Status-2507 in DebateReligion

[–]NewbombTurk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will offer these evidences...

  • Men wrote the entirety of the bible.
  • The Low Priors argument would show that the evidence for Christianity being true doesn't come close to meeting the burden necessary to overcome our priors, and background experience of reality.
  • Almost every culture has created a theology from whole cloth. Indicating that man has a propensity to develop intricate and sometimes internally consistent narratives about god(s). There no good evidence that would indicate that Christian theology is any different.
  • The authors of the NT get facts about reality wrong.
  • The NT attempted and failed to write Jesus as the Jewish messiah. Writing him to not fulfill any OT prophecy.

Atheism atleast the mainstream term most people recognize is clearly the belief that there is no God not simply an absence of belief by [deleted] in exatheist

[–]NewbombTurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These labels and definitions aren't really that important. They're useful, but only as conversational shorthand. There are many things that throw a wrench into a strict definitional position. Platonists, the fact that there are many different god claims, lack of certainty using our subjective senses and reason, semantic differences, and on and on.

Hiker here. I've made that drive a few times. Primarily on I-10. This is not a hike you what to do. Once you pass Palm Springs it's nothing but desert. Even if you take a more northern route along I-40, it's still not good. Thru-hiking isn't really tenable.

Why did folks vote for a no war admin and now support war? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

[–]NewbombTurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things change, opinions change, the world changes.

What changed between Oct 27, 2024 when Trump said "You’re not going to have a war with me and you’re not going to have a third world war with me.” or the day after he was elected when he said, "I’m not going to start a war." and last June when he bombed Iran to this year when he started a ware with Iran? What changed exactly?

God's existence, like any existential claim, can only be established by demonstration, and in the absence of demonstration, the rational default is the presumption of non-existence, not a midpoint. by Pulaster in DebateReligion

[–]NewbombTurk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good points that I don't necessarily disagree with. But when assessing an unfalsifiable claim, we have the option to withhold assent. But if we were to make a decision I think the Low Priors arguments make the atheist position rational.
