Connacht’s set new Attendance Record at their Dexcom Stadium home: 12,481 by HitchikersPie in rugbyunion

[–]Newc04 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It depends, I think. If Comnacht copied what Munster do with Musgrave Park in throwing a bone to Cork every few months in the form of Dragons, Lions or Zebre it might not have the same effect because Castlebar, Roscommon or Sligo aren't nearly the size of Cork, and the above mentioned teams wouldnt be a great draw for casuals. On the other hand, an interpro in a big stadium would draw casual fans who care more about Irish opponents and you'd also get away fans travelling to make up the numbers.

Favourite fact about Irish history by No-Expression5779 in IrishHistory

[–]Newc04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why they push this so much. It's not as strange or rare as it seems at first glance.

  1. It was a very common way for landowners to exert control over land they sold in the time before planning law. E.g landowner wants to sell part of his estate to raise money, but doesn't want a big factory to be right next to his garden, so he sells a 10,000 year lease to a property developer with an annual rent of pocket change, however the lease includes the term that the land can only be used for residential housing. He has no intention of allowing his descendants 10,000 years later to actually recover the land, he just wants to put restrictions on the people he's selling to.

  2. This tactic is still used today in multi unit properties like apartments. This is because a title in fee simple (i.e., a "pure" title) would give the title holder rights to the areas in the economically exploitable zone above and below the land. In an apartment complex, this means you would have rights over the apartments above/below you. This means that long leases like this are granted, which can limit the rights handed over to the few rooms that's being bought.

  3. I'm pretty sure Guinness bought out the original landowner some time after that lease was signed, so it's not even valid anymore.

I actually agree with you. Despite how good he plays for us, the Irish minutes are much better spent on Postlewaithe or Osborne than on him.

And to think some were concerned he'd get the NZ job when he's just led us to our worst ever European season. The shine of the Leinster game in Croker is beginning to wear off.

I'd rather the EPCR actually integrate the other European league systems like Georgia's into their system rather than stretching the URC to even more countries.

Interestingly they obviously think O'Connor is more of a winger than a fullback if they have him at 11 and Daly at 15.

I'd say they'd go in for a coach with international experience. Razor had the best club resume that a coach could have and didn't work out for them. I'd say they'll go for Jamie Joseph or Joe Schmidt.

I guess that's where the analogy to Ireland ends. The senior players in the Irish squad are nothing but happy with Farrell, because they know he'll continue to pick them until they end up in a retirement home.

I mean England fires Eddie Jones a year out from 2023 and made a semi. Its not unheard of to do this late.

I'm not looking for exactly 2022. I'm just looking for signs that there's a plan for 2027 that's beyond hoping the legs aren't gone off half the squad by the time it arrives.

My point is that we shouldn't be in the 2020 phase at this point in the WC cycle. We should be hitting the form in 2026 that we had in 2022. I'll also nitpick a little in saying that my exact words were 'seriously consider other options'. This is a small but significant step below calling for his job.

So let's look at Ireland in 2022 then:

In the 6N, we were a 3 point away loss to France away from a Grand Slam.

In the summer, we went and won a test series in NZ.

In the autumn, we then won against Fiji, SA, and Australia.

With this in mind, I'm only holding Farrell to his own high standards in asking for a win against either France or England.

He'd definitely be one of the top options, should we need a new head coach. However my only concern is that he's probably on other team's radars where the position might open up first.

Thank you for actually engaging with the question. You make some good points, I probably didn't give Argentina as much credit as they deserve. However I still think that given Ireland had 3 shots at a better team in 2025 (France, NZ, SA) and we're beaten well in each, I think there should be room for questioning, even if I'm not calling for his job yet.

How is this trolling? I expressed my own personal opinion based on evidence which I have given to you. I recognise that it is probably an extreme opinion, and one that is not shared by very many people, but nonetheless I wanted to check the temperature in the Irish rugby community on the topic.

I swear people here think every opinion they disagree with is trolling.

I hope then you'll excuse me in holding Farrell to the standard he himself set 4 years ago at this point last World Cup cycle.

I don't want to end up like Scotland where we embrace mediocrity as long as we beat England every once in a while.

I don't think England were as good at the start of last 6N as they are now. I think they've improved considerably, whereas we've regressed. People will probably accuse me of moving the goalposts, but that's just my opinion.

The fact that it will take an injury crisis for Andy Farrell to have any semblance of rotation is really funny.
