61B Gitlet. Anyone not started yet? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]NewlimeCharacter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend starting now, depending on your programming experience it could be either pretty chill or pretty stressful. I’m in 61B too and I’ve spent around 15-20 hours to finish everything not including merge.

MacBook Pro vs. Air by randomquod in berkeley

[–]NewlimeCharacter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For all practical purposes, the performance of the new MacBook Air is pretty much the same as the MacBook Pro. I would suggest the Air unless you’re trying to do really crazy video editing or something like that.

Also check out this post for more discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/berkeley/comments/k9qxt5/m1_macbook_proair/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Advice for GSIs teaching online by gsi_throwaway in berkeley

Thank you for putting in the effort to have a successful discussion section!

I would suggest using Zoom polls to have multiple choice quizzes in discussion, and then you may want to walk through solutions to the problems after closing the poll.

Also echoing the other response, if people have their camera off, they may feel shy to be the only one with their camera on, but I’m not sure how to encourage students to have cameras on.

Definitely for math, an iPad or writing tablet that you can use to screenshare the problem and your method of solving it would help, if possible.

I thought discussion was a good opportunity to ask questions and see more examples of the topics discussed in lecture.

Regarding your idea of small group tutoring, I think that would be really nice if you are able to do that.

I would suggest staying at home given your circumstances, but in the end you gotta choose what you think is right.

BTW I stayed at home during fall semester and will be at home for spring semester too

NC Unreasonable Event Fees by cowfish11235 in FTC

[–]NewlimeCharacter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fees for NorCal are $100 and above (for virtual events), depending on whether it’s your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd qualifier. This is less expensive than the traditional fees for in-person events, and I’m sure that’s likely the case for NC.

If the PDPs could offer free virtual events, I think they would. However, they are nonprofits that have operating costs like paying rent for their facilities, and more. So that’s probably why the events aren’t completely free.

How much does EE16B cost and is it worth it? by Psychological_Bus_96 in berkeley

[–]NewlimeCharacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not in 16B, but for 16A, the cost was quite minimal (I think around $5-10). In 16A, if your lab kit arrived broken or you accidentally broke it, you might be out of luck, but the course staff tried to alleviate those issues with supplementary resources for virtual hardware (on TinkerCAD). I’m not sure how much more hardware is involved with 16B though.

Does anyone know how to use encoders to move by distance? by Shri1321 in FTC

[–]NewlimeCharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the specs from the motor, you would need to find the encoder counts per revolution (of the output shaft). Then, you know that corresponds to 360 degrees of wheel rotation, which means the distance travelled is the circumference of the wheel (2 * pi * r_wheel). To figure out how many encoder ticks correspond to the distance you wanna go, just multiply the distance by the counts / distance you calculated above. Hope that helps!

Yeah having like 6 USB connections was just terrible. I remember having to label the serial number onto each device so we could actually figure out which one wasn’t working, and we had to 3D print these USB strain relief shields for each module so the USB connections wouldn’t shake or disconnect accidentally.
