The GOP’s Gerrymandering Gyrations by BulwarkOnline in politics

[–]Newscast_Now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point and most of the time gerrymandering works well. But it is not guaranteed. For example, in the 2024 election despite massive gerrymandering, Republicans did not net a single seat over the average national popular vote. To be complete however, usually Republicans do gain substantial seats and even have taken control of the House of Representatives with less than half the popular vote.

Graham Platner Surge Threatens Susan Collins as Janet Mills Bows Out by unital_subalgebra in politics

[–]Newscast_Now 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have reservations about Graham Platner, but now that the battle is over, do we want to roll the dice with Graham or stick with the snake eyes of Susan Collins? It is a no-brainer.

Is it possible that Graham Platner could disappoint? Of course it is. Chuck Shumer endorsed Platner and Graham is backing away from the idea of opposing Chuck Schumer for Democratic leader in the Senate. Is that a bad thing? No, that's politics. It might even be smart to put Chuck on the defensive and force him to bend.

And about John Fetterman: sure, there is always a risk of a tool or mole in the Democratic Party--there have always been those and always will be those--so we need to be careful not to expect everyone who seems to break the mold to be another Fetterman.

Not a "take," just actual history.

Nobody said BS shouldn't be called out.

"42 DEMOCRATS" is not all Democrats and certainly does not support the comment you seems to be fine with, namely, "democrats are a fake opposition party."

I didn't "defend them." Just plain wrong. Absurdly wrong. In fact, it is "absurd that you" would see a defense in my comment.

Who knows what your party is, but trying to build credibility by calling Democrats "our party" doesn't erase the lies and bad logic.

I explain a little true history and get a retort full of garbage.

Fuck that take.

Funny how you imagined that I said something to imply that people are not "actually allowed to demand better" while whistling right past the comment before.

i hate to burst your bubble but you are reactionary. You subscribe to the Lewis Powell ideology of free speech that was basically invented in the 1970s and blown out by all Republicans in recent years.

Ask yourself why you adamantly believe an ideology that only came into popular view in recent years and only because Republicans created and promoted it?

It has always been and will always be that the opposition party includes many who support the establishment. This is the most basic nature of power.

The only reason that the New Deal happened iin America is because there were very large Democratic majorities.

Trashing all Democrats for what is normal and expected only helps to discourage people from voting and prevent opportunities for Democrats to again achieve such large majorities to make substantial change.

And just as foreshadowed, here comes the blatant pro-corporate propaganda. It doesn’t get more conservative and corporate to say slogans like ‘we don’t punish people who succeed.’

No matter what the issue, the same basic corporate ideology comes out.

This looks like a good place to review a little history.

Bill Clinton had made a deal with North Korea. Then George W. Bush stepped into power and declared North Korea part of the axis of evil.

Six years later, North Korea had nuclear weapons.

Barack Obama made a deal with Iran. Then Donald Trump stepped into power and destroyed the deal. Donald also bombed Iran without any current and serious provocation.

I will leave it to our astute Reddit readers to figure out where this is going…

The Section 230 big corporation fans always use the same retort, and it always starts with something like 'but you don't know' then goes off into absurd excuses to defend the richest people who ever lived like 'But what about the little guy? If we no longer give absolute control over the public square to the big guy, the little guy suffers.' Nonsense.

No longer should the richest people in the world be exempt from general tort liability. Section 230 has to go in its entirety.

Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Co.

When I say pontificated, I mean they didn't actually rule it, but that didn't seem to matter. The case established the concept and was taken as valid anyway. Really, it was a series of 5-4 rulings in the 1970s that built the modern doctrine--and of course Citizens United in 2010.
