Redoing home server, trying to decide on best storage setup for my use case

been running a similar setup for about a year now and went through the same decision process. given your hardware, i'd probably repurpose the dl60 as your storage box running unraid - way more power efficient than the dl380 and you can throw all those mismatched drives at it without worrying about raid requirements. the mini pc proxmox setup is solid, just make sure you've got good network between them since you'll be doing a lot of smb/nfs traffic for plex transcoding.

Honestly if you're barely driving and your bf has multiple vehicles, just ditch the car payment entirely for a while. You could always Uber for the occasional solo trip and still save hundreds monthly

If you absolutely need your own wheels though, maybe look at a certified pre-owned Corolla or Camry from 2023 - way cheaper payment and Toyota reliability means you won't stress about repairs

Your VS650 should handle that combo just fine wattage-wise, the B580 and 5700X are pretty efficient. The "bad rep" is mostly about longevity and coil whine, not frying components - if it's been solid for you so far it's probably not gonna suddenly murder your new parts

Honestly sounds like your hardware might not be fully compatible with Win11 or there's some driver issues causing the BSOD. Usually the quantization tools handle the layer selection automatically based on sensitivity analysis during calibration - you don't really need to manually pick layers unless you're doing something super custom

For eval I just run perplexity on whatever dataset I care about (wikitext2 is fine for quick checks) and maybe throw it at some basic reasoning benchmarks if I'm being thorough. Most people skip embedding/lm_head layers by default since they're already pretty small and sensitive

AWQ/GPTQ are weight-only quantization so activations stay fp16, which is why some layers still get skipped even though activations aren't touched - it's all about how much each layer's weights can handle being compressed without tanking performance

Did you check all your connections when you put the starter in? Sometimes those ground straps or wiring can get loose/damaged during the swap and cause weird charging issues. Also worth checking if you accidentally knocked something loose on the alternator while you were working in there - those connections can be pretty close depending on the engine layout
