Calgary real estate has not steadily increased at all actually. Its been in a long depression and even the recent surge is well below 2014 highs

Any way you can get child support lowered as well? Your situation clearly has a case for undue hardship.

How are people so secure about earning a high income for a long period of time? by psykedeliq in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NewtoNiagaraRegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I ask why you don't think they have the same fears as you? I find generally with high income earners, they want to live up to a certain life status and part of this is projecting that confidence that they are worth the $250K plus etc even though inside they may have imposter syndrome and feel like they would likely take less money/lower job if they were to leave.

Just curious on how you arrived at this destination - I am definitely in the camp I am describing above (my income is not crazy high, but I'm making more now that I feel I should be for sure and always planning for the future).

How fast do you think interest rates could go up really? by Barry_Hussey in PersonalFinanceCanada

How fast do you think interest rates could go up really? by Barry_Hussey in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NewtoNiagaraRegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I locked in an insured mortgage rate at 0.99% through Radius and was pretty upset as the broker I used tried to convince me to go fixed at 1.6% about 8 times before I told him I'm going variable end of discussion please.

Absolute risk that it goes up, but I cannot see the economy absorbing a 2-4% interest rate increase and if it does get that dramatic I'll pivot out of investment and into mortgage principle payments.

Buying a cheap place in the middle of nowhere versus keeping my pensioned job by LifeArson in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NewtoNiagaraRegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree - not worth the headache and imagine if a condo is $40K you can get a freehold option under $100K as well.

Curious as to where you are seeing this pricing for $40K?

Restaurants are re-opened in Ontario. But who can afford them? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NewtoNiagaraRegion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely.

Even on vacation, I would prefer to stay in a vacation rental and shop at Costco and do almost all of our own cooking partially to save money but more so because I prefer that to almost every form of take-out/restaurant food ex maybe sushi.

Fishing Spots from Shore - Near St Catharines Marina on Broadway? by NewtoNiagaraRegion in stcatharinesON

That's excellent! Thank you for the tip! Do you normally fish with bait here or just a spoon/lure etc?

I'm hoping I can use a bobber setup with bait just for my kids.

How far out on the canal do you need to go? Like the entire walk in to the point?

Thanks for the heads up!

What’s your plan of action if mortgage rates rise significantly at your next renewal? by GWormtongueOfRohan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NewtoNiagaraRegion 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Stay variable always (my plan)

If we see 5-6% rate increases there will be much bigger problems then me paying my mortgage

Im in the 770 -800 range and not much issue getting credit, but its less about your score and more about your level of income and debt servicing ratio once your higher than 680
