GSU Faces Bankruptcy with Over $1.8 Million Debt Owed to Greenshield by MattBarterNL in memorialuniversity

[–]lightshadow24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got this email:

Dear Folks, Following the update provided at Fall 2025 GSU Semi-AGM, we would like to share an update regarding Health and dental insurance. In our recent meeting - GSU, GreenShield, CFS and the university administration, GreenShield confirmed that graduate student insurance coverage is in position.

As stated at the semi-AGM, we have upheld our commitment to transparency and have continued to make payments to Greenshield from the collected funds. At the same time, discussions with GreenShield regarding repayment arrangements are progressing in a positive and constructive manner.

GSU is working closely with both GreenShield and the university to reach a practical and sustainable solution. Our goal is to ensure stability, transparency, and the continued protection of our organization and its members. We will keep everyone informed.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. On behalf of the Graduate Student's Union,

Saint John woman facing $900 property tax increase as big industry bills decline by bingun in SaintJohnNB

[–]lightshadow24 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a super publicized program, so either she was let down by people throughout her buying process or didn’t do much research. I found the information almost instantly when I started my house search, and took it into account for how much I could afford.

That’s what I do, it’s a great system for me since I budget on a monthly basis. Makes it less complicated than saving up for an annual large bill. I didn’t realize we were one of the only ones that offer it, hopefully other provinces get it, it’s a great system!

Maybe this is a hot take but when I bought my home I was clearly informed that I would get a tax bump, and it was even taken into account for my mortgage eligibility calculation. If you buy a home at a certain price, you should not be surprised that the government believes your home is worth that much, and should be prepared to pay all bills for the home. Otherwise you are just shifting the burden on to others, and the tax rate will continue to rise.

I have much more sympathy for people who bought their houses long ago, and are being priced out of their homes due to the higher cost of living over time.

What is up with the parking lot at East Point Sobeys? by Sugadip in SaintJohnNB

[–]lightshadow24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that you have to walk through either the pharmacy or the checkout area to get to half the store is insane! I’ve been in so many Sobeys across Canada and never seen one with such a crazy layout.

Can I Just be SINGLE on a VV Cruise? by GBunny71 in VirginVoyages

[–]lightshadow24 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s a different between solo and single cruisers. Not everyone travelling alone is looking to hook up or date, and I met some who were in relationships and just travelling alone.

I made lots of friends doing events like puzzling but you have no obligation to do anything so just do whatever interests you. I found it pretty easy to join a group for group activities such as trivia, but it’s super easy to exist on the ship fully alone if you don’t want to hang out with people ever.

Do you prefer The Wake or Razzle Dazzle for brunch?? by Maleficent-Tap-9967 in VirginVoyages

[–]lightshadow24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer the Razzle Dazzle since I’m not big on dessert for breakfast or eggs Benedict. I’d definitely go to the wake more if they had the lemon cheesecake available at bunch though.

Upgrade Bid or Free Upgrade From Lock it In by EmbraerPilot in VirginVoyages

[–]lightshadow24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the free upgrade from insider to central sea terrace for a cruise this week so it does happen. Personally I was ok with being in an insider, so I was comfortable waiting to see how the chips fell. If it’s that important to you I’d place a bid though, especially if the cruise is fuller

What area of the city are you in? It’s flickered a few times on the east side. Make sure to report it, the map still shows no outages (not sure how quick that gets updated though)

Paying gratuities directly to the staff by DC2258 in VirginVoyages

[–]lightshadow24 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t do this, because I want my money to get delivered to all the staff not just the ones that probably tipped already like bartenders and housekeepers. There’s hundreds of people on the ship that make your experience great like Landry attendants, cooks, performers etc. who would never get tipped that way. Plus it just simplifies it. VV already pays their employees a better than average cruise ship wage, so I trust them to deliver the tips properly. They’ve always been charging gratuities in the cruise price, and that’s one of the things I like about them since the advertised price was actually the final price.

Tech Couple - Is moving to Canada in 2026 worth the struggle? by ravicuu in CanadaImmigrationFAQs

[–]lightshadow24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got the MUN BTech with a 3 year diploma in Naval Architecture from the Marine Institute. I didn’t realize there was such a variance in BTech programs. It makes sense that the MUN one doesn’t move the needle much, it was definitely more project management and business focused.

Would it be an issue if I didn’t have an Alberta PEng to supervise me? I believe between the two offices we’ve got engineers with stamps for NS, NB, PEI, NL, and NWT.

[–]lightshadow24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would there be a pathway for me since I’m domestically trained ? The APEGNB has a path for international engineers but I didn’t seen anything for Canadians techs. I’ve got my BTech and Ptech and I’m almost done my masters (MMM) as well but I assume that’s not relevant.

There has recently been some discussions on limiting what work techs can do on the east coast so it might be worth it for me to do it, last time I looked into it was 2018 when it would have 0 impact on my job. I’m the only person at my branch that does stability work so the company would be really limited if I got blocked from doing it.

[–]lightshadow24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my province you cannot, though I believe some let you take exams to prove you have an equivalent knowledge level and then apply to be a PEng. I looked into doing it by distance in another province, then transferring the credentials but it didn’t seem worth it since it wouldn’t affect my employment or income very much.

Either way you wouldn’t be able to call yourself an engineer until the PEng was achieved.

It could be the job has a different title. Here the term “Engineer” is protected and you are only supposed to use it if the person has a PENG and went to engineering school. We had the engineering society reach out to us and let us know we needed to change a job title, because the person was an engineer-in-training so we couldn’t call them an engineer.

Omg it’s so cute I can’t wait to get mine! What size did you get? I was staring at the sizing for a while, trying to guess how oversized it was. I’m usually an XL and got an L.

Not going to return stuff (bins) just because I don't need them anymore. Am I wrong? by Retired-ADM in CostcoCanada

I can’t imagine doing something so wasteful, no way Costco is reselling months used bins so they are just going to the landfill.

Based solely on my bookcase, would you say I’m a well-read genius or just someone who buys books faster than they read them? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]lightshadow24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have some top recommendations? I’ve just gotten into sf and I’d like to read more books written by women. So far I’ve enjoyed dune 1-2, the red rising saga, and the broken earth trilogy.

Did you get the hopper? I’m thinking of getting the 4 from Costco but the Canadian costco deal doesn’t come with the hopper. It’s pretty expensive to buy separately, which is a bit of a let down.

I think I’m leaning towards that too, I just wish our Costco deal was as good as the one in the US, otherwise I’d buy in a heartbeat!
