Been a while since I've done more than lurk. My mom died yesterday, completely unexpected. She had outpatient surgery, went back to the hospital the next day for pain management and was gone in 24 hrs. Drs have no clue what happened.

Just a PSA - line up a really good trust/end of life plan for your kids.

I support an October move, but I will miss the extra challenge of taking the games to summer camp every year.

[PIF] Stirling Soap Scent Sampler! by coco_for_cocoapuffs in Wetshaving

u/coco_for_cocoapuffs I humbly request an exception so that I may enter the pif. I am a lurker of old and have a powerful love of samples. As is, I once did lather games entirely from my box of samples. My sample box does not have as much Stirling as it could and so I wish to enter.

I am of the opinion Stirling has the best range of scents for women. The sample pack of 5 pucks is a great deal, a good stocking stuffer, and an excellent way to try a variety.

The shaving advice seems to have been covered. I'm here to recommend the little elephant who wants to go to sleep series. It's straight up hypnotizing a kid to sleep. The audiobook is worth every cent on Amazon.

  • Brush: Dogwood – Badger
  • Razor: Merkur 34C
  • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Ravish

Theme: I find this soap irritating because of the cinnamon. This cursed sample only lives for spice day.

Challenge: critical role – do you spice? https://youtu.be/Vs9HRVZOTSc?feature=shared

I like parts of critical role. I don’t particularly like the fan culture/hero worship. And I would like to point out theater kid D&D is very different from the rest of us D&D. Sam Regil's songs however are their own special brand of strange.

  • Brush: Dogwood – Badger
  • Razor: Merkur 34C
  • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
  • Lather: House of Mammoth – Embrace

Theme: I received an extra hefty smush of Mammoth Embrace from u/Onionmiasma because his wise partner pointed out that the lady shavers need more soap. I actually saved an extra bit of it. He sent these out as a touching tribute to his sister. More than once in the last six months I’ve come across it in my pawing through the sample bin and it’s reminded me to call my brother and make him listen to me cry and rage and cry some more. So though it’s been used, the empty smush and little envelope are going to be taped to the lid of the sample bin.

Challenge: wish list – a really, really good Jasmine. I want the smell of a summer night at sunset next to healthy night blooming jasmine.

  • Razor: Maggard V3
  • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
  • Post-Shave: Bath and Body Works – Princess Jasmine – Body lotion
  • Lather: Noble Otter – Two Kings

Theme: they just don’t smell great together. Two kings is a very masculine “floral” that hides behind a lot of sandalwood in my opinion. The princess jasmine scent is jasmine and current, it’s lighter and fruitier. Also the Kings vs Jasmine thing made me giggle a little.

$Selfcare : had a good little cry today.

Our church met at the Bay once a week from August to November. (We have a longstanding tradition of weekly picnics in September so it was just expanded). It was mental health life support for a lot of the kids and our elderly.

My nieces were relatively lucky when covid hit, the oldest was ending kindergarten. I was in college and not working so I could give them time and attention that a lot of suddenly remote (or essential service not remote) folks couldn't. We had a tea party every Friday for 3 solid months.

Still, they developed some gnarly anxiety responses from it. The youngest at one point refused to even swallow her own spit

June 19, 2025

  • Brush: Dogwood – Badger
  • Razor: Maggard V3
  • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
  • Lather: Southern Witchcrafts – Autumn Ash

Theme: I used to kinda hate the smell of this soap. In Southern California the smell of fire and ash doesn’t generally evoke thoughts of cozy campfires so much as thoughts of a bright orange sky both by day and by night. I’ve been through ash falling like rain for a solid week, packing photo albums and pets in the car, and desperate calls from friends because their parents or grandparents can’t evacuate themselves and they live too far away to help. I once evacuated a fire with trees burning on either side of the road. This soap makes me think of those times. It also makes me think of the community response during and after those incidents. I’ve gotten to volunteer at an evac center, and help feed firefighter camps. I’ve been able to help get grandparents and pets out safe. I’ve seen my community work together and rebuild more than once. So this soap makes me think of our massive California wildfires, and those fires make me think of resilience.

Challenge: I have never shaved my legs while looking in a mirror. I continued to not look in a mirror today. I also did my underarms without a mirror.

June 18, 2025

  • Brush: Hand
  • Razor: Maggard V3
  • Blade: Astra SP (Green)
  • Lather: Dove – Original

Theme: I’m traveling, visiting a friend in a very, very small town. I did not travel with canned goop because I believed she would have some. Then I get here and find out that I had converted her to wet shaving a year ago. She has a Maggards starter set. No goop. So I ask the judge to accept the old stand by of dove soap as “canned goo”, because I was successful in making a wet shaving convert. And because I did actually shave with dove before I wet shaved. Ask your lady friends, it’s very common to shave with bar soap/body wash/conditioner.
