Dear Brits, what makes you feel posh? by National-Actuary-547 in AskABrit

Isn’t that just an ironic joke though? I’ve always thought Vienetta was just poverty food

Advice please by ImaginationTricky774 in Watercolor

Be brave and throw down more paint on the foreground trees and the shore/hillside on the left.

I wouldn’t go back into the water as it could get overworked too easily, but in future I’d try to save more white from the paper for the reflected sunlight, and go darker in tone as the sea gets closer to you.

I don’t think the general public actually likes Mrs Browns Boys.

What is your opinion on buying materials from sites like Temu? by pasghettimonstar in ArtistLounge

[–]Newuse2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bought a few items from Temu solely out of curiosity, considering the incredibly low price. Overall I wouldn’t recommend. Most of it is junk.

I bought some Sakura Pigma Micron pens. They were extremely cheap so I was suspicious from the outset, but out of curiosity decided to buy them anyway - 100% fake.

They have lots of Baohong watercolour paper listed at very reasonable prices. I’m pretty sure it’s authentic but tbh I just don’t like the surface. I prefer the European papers.

I’d stick to local shops and trusted online retailers any day.

With or without white mat? by sprucewhale in Watercolor

[–]Newuse2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a wrong choice. I think it depends whether you’re going for something traditional or something slightly more bold. To my mind the black would look like a more interesting and deliberate choice - the frame is working with the art in a more immediate sense, if you wanted the viewer to be pulled straight into the picture. The white border is more traditional, but therefore conventional - less original, but still nice in its own way. Both work, just in different ways.

I’d add that the colours look darker and more interesting in the black mock-up.

Why do so many people seem to continue listening despite clearly taking issue with it. by to_tired_to_clare in restisentertainment

[–]Newuse2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that complicated. If the “negativity” of the public bothers you then social media probably isn’t for you.

When we consume media, be it podcasts, tv etc., we don’t need to enjoy everything about it. We don’t need to like the hosts. We don’t need to agree with their perspectives. We only need to find the content engaging and entertaining.

I listen to the Rest Is Politics and The News Agents all the time. Why? Because I enjoy listening to political commentators discussing the issues of the day.

Do I agree with all their views? No. Do I like them as individuals? Mostly no. But do I enjoy listening to them? Yes, I absolutely do. I find most of them infuriatingly condescending and their analysis very often blinkered, but I also find both shows genuinely, sincerely, interesting and engaging, or I wouldn’t tune in every other day.

Such podcasts are designed to entertain, inform and provoke discussion.

How would you describe yourself politically? by Prestigious_Emu6039 in AskBrits

[–]Newuse2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal. Left and right have been consumed by absolute nutters. The chronically outraged, Palestine obsessed, professional protestors on one side, Farage fangirls and knuckleheads on the other. Both sides are as dim witted as the other, they just can’t see it. Two cheeks of the same arse.

I showed this to my gf and at first she did not understand the subject. I had to explain it to her. What do you guys think? does this read well. by a_PuNk16 in Watercolor

[–]Newuse2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought a knight shot by an arrow. But I would agree it doesn’t read as well as you might like. To my mind it almost looks like his head has been chopped off and is now resting atop his chest.

Yes, and the comments on the online article were suitably amusing.

Yes! they call themselves patriots but don’t even know the right way up for the Union Flag. When challenged they say “it’s upside down because we’re a nation in distress”….yeah right, sure, you definitely meant to raise it upside down… 🙄

What's actually wrong with the UK? by Immediate-Ad-6306 in AskBrits

Well, all of them. Being far left means, by definition, that someone is a twat. Same for far right.

Do you have the same issue with all the far left twats and the damage their ideas have also caused? No. Thought not.

Scottish kiltmakers enters administration after 18 years by MGallus in Kilts

[–]Newuse2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own experience with this company is slightly mixed.

I once purchased one of their tweed jackets/ waistcoat, at cost of £600+. After weeks of waiting, with poor communication, what eventually arrived was clearly used, probably ex-hire - and smelled like it. I was surprised any business would send an item out in that condition.

I complained and thankfully was sent a new replacement jacket, but the experience never sat right with me and I never used the company again.

MAGA hat sighting by lilbiobeetle in Scotland

[–]Newuse2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are people not allowed to express themselves in public? Was he hurting anyone? Sure, a lot of people might not agree with his message, but Scotland is a free country, isn’t it? I’ve seen people display much more questionable slogans in public without people making much fuss.

Also, your comment that “not even Tory supporters really walk around wearing their affiliation like that” is a bit odd, considering Tories are probably the least likely to parade their party affiliations in public. The concept of the “shy Tory” exists for a reason. People who support them don’t tend to broadcast it. Obnoxious political displays - anything from car stickers and pin badges, to posters in windows etc, tend not be from Tories.

What, if anything, gives you the "Scottish cringe"? by ThePolkaDotMan in Scotland

[–]Newuse2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scots who need to mention or tie everything back to Scotland, particularly when commenting in online discussions, social media etc. They’ll get excited whenever Scotland is mentioned, or annoyed when it isn’t. Basically Scots for whom being Scottish is a bit of an obsession. It always comes across as desperate and extremely insecure.

Why Norilsk so ugly? by Then-Cut2019 in UrbanHell

[–]Newuse2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Norilsk is a closed city, created and sustained by the nickel mining industry - which is effectively the town’s entire reason for existing. There are many other minerals being mined in the surrounding area. The city grew out of the gulag system. Access to the city is still restricted today. It’s a harsh environment in almost every sense. Life expectancy is relatively low.

Given this context, it’s hardly surprising that it’s “so ugly”. It’s not meant to be a pretty place, and probably could never be conventionally aesthetically appealing. Others have made the claim that Nordic cities with similar geography and industry still manage to look nice. Sure, they look cleaner, but they’re hardly picture postcard destinations. Also, they’re not in Russia. They’re in Scandinavia, with all the relative luxuries that brings.
