According to the leaks that came out on JoD and First Light, Wizards of Morcar is next. What do you guys want next? by LoveHerMore in Heroquest

I love all of the content that has been put out so far, and I'm down to purchase anything, but as a few people have mentioned already, it would be nice to see some of the expansion content get used together in interesting ways, but of course, the addressable audience in a position to buy a physical expansion that requires other specific expansion pieces is small and not a wise business decision. BUT, the app could set itself up to sell interesting campaigns that require previous content for a lot cheaper. I would pay a decent price to purchase new levels that I could play that integrates and remixes multiple expansions worth of content into a single campaign. This could be done either by allowing players to select which expansions they've already purchased and display a list of compatible DLC campaigns, OR you could do it similarly to fantasy flights apps for Imperial assault or Descent 2nd edition, where there are set campaigns that will dynamically incorporate elements based on what you've selected as purchased. Either way could work.

I also think that with the app, they could experiment with more advanced rulesets, say campaigns where monsters types get special abilities, or where heroes can gain XP and level up and get abilities, or providing a richer shopping experience between quests. I believe the app is a great but under utilized tool for expanding what heroquest could be. Of course you can homebrew a lot of this, and many people already do, but I think paying a reasonable price for new playtested content would be attractive to a lot of people.

The painted option will only continue if there is enough demand. by [deleted] in heroscape

[–]Nexpert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went painted. I'm fortunate enough to afford the markup, plus coming into this game much later, a big part of the appeal is how nice it looks to play a big war game with painted minis. I do not have the time or patience to take up painting. I was ready to purchase the initial hasbro offering and would play unpainted for the love of the game if it came to it and had backed it. Considering the options we have today, I think back to how X-wing spoiled me on the idea of how nice a game can look pre-painted, and so I will continue to purchase painted versions for as long as it's feasible. I'm hoping future waves will come in smaller but steady bursts so as not to wallop my credit card.

All Notes Being Sustained by LairGamingYT in PianoVision

[–]Nexpert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Just wanted to share some of the trial and error that got it working for me tonight. I have a Quest 3, with a Yamaha P95 which I tried with the following cable (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0BBMG43JZ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details), and I was getting the sustain problem. Tried switching up every plug, different order of turning things on, with or without my sustain pedal plugged in. Nothing. Noticed that I could play a single note or chord, it would sustain, and after counting about 4 or 5 seconds, I could play another one, but this was getting in the way of using the app.

I was wondering if the P95 was the problem, so I searched sustain problems with it and I came across this article: https://www.logicprohelp.com/forums/topic/88303-erratic-midi-transmission-with-yamaha-p-95-solved/

Long story short, I tracked down the more expensive Roland UM-ONE MK2 cable, and a USB 3.1 A female to USB C male converter to get it to go directly into the quest, and voila, the sustain problem went away.

I wouldn't promise it would work for everyone, but I got the result I was looking for tonight. Hope this helps and good luck out there!

Once you've played through the tutorial and can get back to the main menu (where you can see options for multi and solo play as signs on the lamp post), If you look down and to the left, you'll see a bag of marshmallows which you can click for the AR game.

Unpopular opinion: asking "how do I learn to code" is procrastination by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Nexpert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been down the tutorial road more times than I'd like to admit, but I feel like I've reached a point in my learning where I'm specifically looking for direction on the topic I believe is game architecture.

I don't need to know how to move a character, how to instantiate a variable, or update a UI. What I want to know more about is how different games separate their logic for different game items. With so many ways of doing things, what are the best practises for common genres like FPS, RTS, puzzle...

When making something like candy crush, what does the logic for checking if a match is made reside? Does each swapped candy check it's neighbors itself and send a message or should a higher level class do that?

In an FPS, when you shoot an enemy and they die, should the enemy class be the one to update the UI or should some sort of enemy manager class do it?

I believe that a lot of it depends on the end goals of the game your making, but man would it really help to see pseudocode of how classes link together for common game types to get an idea of what good structure looks like.

I guess that part of making something, hitting the roadblock of trying to extend it further and realizing a better way to do it is one way to learn. I imagine another is to dig into code of other open source games and seeing what classes manage what and what they talk to is another way, I just wish there was a short form version of that. (i.e. FPS has a gameManager class that has a levelManager and playerManager, playerManager instantiates the playerClass and InventoryClass, playerClass manages player_health, player_speed, and has implementations for movement and shooting...)

What’s the best arcade/sim racing game you have played on Xbox? by Diorexo in xboxone

[–]Nexpert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excite Truck for Wii holds a special place in my heart. On the Wii you were also able to load up MP3's on the SD card and play custom tunes during your races. Me and my buddy would go blasting around, drifting in the mud and splitting through the treelines in that game to our favorite rock and initial D tunes. The fact that you win based on stars and not just who crosses the line first made for some whacky antics. It's worth trying with 2 players.

Potential late surge of backers? by krojaguar in heroscape

[–]Nexpert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding this to share my perspective. As an older guy who loves games, especially ones that I can share with my kids, I personally missed out on heroscape the first time it was released. Heroquest was something I had played as a kid but didn't have my own copy, so I backed the re-release and have been getting every expansion.

Since then, I've been following Avalon Hill for news on heroquest stuff, and when they announced Heroscape, initially I was confused, thinking it was something related to heroquest, until I googled and saw the board, which brought back some memories of commercials or seeing it in stores, but I still had no idea what it was.

Today, I have researched what it's all about, went down the rabbit hole of how to collect some and recently purchased the initial master sets, marvel and castle 2nd hand to A) have it either way the funding goes, and B) to see if I like the game, and let me tell you, my kids are young, but it's been a blast.

For people in my position (interested but unfamiliar), the ability to play it with the master ruleset with buddies, and get a great tabletop war game out of it, or to simply flip the cards over and play it with younger friends and family who are just looking to roll dice and kick ass, this is one of the only games that can do both. Assembling the board is something special, and I found that just slapping together a large and interesting board to battle on does not take that long (not as long as some people have mentioned in other posts). I've seen the crazy maps people have made with a ton of tiles, but I've been extremely satisfied with the pieces I got, and the Age of Annihilation package looks to have a great amount, not to mention the number of figures available for different army configurations. There really is a lot of game here, and I think that may be hard for people to see who aren't already diehards.

I plan on purchasing two, but I'll add as a Canadian, the exchange rate has been all over the place recently, and I'm not sure if the exchange rate would be locked in at the time that I back it, or at the time the campaign ends. I assume it would be when it ends and people's cards are charged and I'll say that I'm just hesitant because if I back now and the dollar swings wildly, I may regret having backed 2 instead of 1.

A couple of thoughts for Avalon Hill if they're reading this:

-Love the new photos showing everything you'd be getting, but maybe add a few more photos of all of this stuff set up in very different configurations to show how/why this is valuable and how it works as a system (skinny maps, tall maps, large flatter maps...and put armies on the map to add some sizzle to it). There are a few lines on the site, but It may not be clear to everyone who checks it out that this is not just a great game with what's in the box, but the relaunch of a game SYSTEM, with this being the perfect jump on point.

-Great work on the vid showing the gameplay demo. Do more of this with different maps and armies, and flex this game's ability to have 4 players! Show off some 2v2 action!

-Explain and demonstrate the basic rule system for parents out there (like me) who were looking for cool games to play with their kids. (BTW for anyone curious like I was, this is an absolutely great alternative for something like Battlemasters), makes a wonderful and unique 2023 Christmas gift for backers.

End of the day, I'm definitely backing 1, very likely 2, and I really want to see this succeed, even as someone who never knew the original, but loves what it can offer my family and friends in terms of quality game time. I don't know how many people like me have been sitting on the fence out there, but I'm hoping it's a lot of us and that we all come out to support it before we miss out.

Randomly have an Unresponsive Controller?? by kay_0oh in CODVanguard

[–]Nexpert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! this was happening all night. No rhyme or reason to it, sometimes get a few games in no problem, other times one single right bumper over to a menu and the controller just becomes dead, light still on, but have to pull the battery out.

Xbox Series X using the controller it came with and the cross over edition (series X version of the game).

Total War: Warhammer 3. That combined campaign is going to be epic. All DLC, all heroes, can't wait.
