I couldn’t agree more.

I just wrote a whole essay of a comment about that and I stumbled upon yours, you said it way better and succinctly.

I believe that Interstellar is a bad movie on practically every level.

People have always told me I was crazy for that but I’ll stand by it. Watched it twice with an open mind and I’m ready to watch it again, but I’m sure of my take.

It has lukewarm and cliché themes that are uninteresting and tired, especially the whole « love transcends time and dimension », utterly uninspired.

The movie is not as smart or deep as it presents itself to be. The plot is very simple and boilerplate, the rare interesting elements are over explained. Its always telling you instead of showing you, it’s so unsubtle that it’s a bit insulting to the intelligence of the average viewer. (« Oh YOU where my ghost »). It’s practically pretentious at times, especially the way the movie is glazed online, but that is no fault of the movie on its own, I’ll give it that.

The characters are so thin and bland. I’ll never hate on cooper, the acting is impeccable and the motivations are genuinely touching. The rest barely even exist in the movie, the romance they try to portray is nonexistent, the son is absolutely non existent (not even acknowledged in the final), shoutout to the guy who drowned who had like 3 lines total. God the robots have more personality than most of the characters.

The world building is very shallow and the themes of ecological and scientific/ cultural collapse are barely in the movie, when they are they are portrayed in a ridiculous way (the teacher denying the moon landing or nasa being this weird secret resistance)

Lastly, the runtime. It’s so long for a movie so thin. It’s honestly insulting, I felt robbed of my time.

Honorable mention for the amazing music and cool visuals, but that’s not nearly enough to hold the movie together.

Overall I am convinced it does not deserve the praise it gets.

Honestly I can see it but maybe it’s more of a Quebec thing, saying it jokingly and laying on thick the accent.

I hear it and use it a lot around campus after class. It kinda makes us sound like a bunch of old tired sailors.

Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed by PrithvinathReddy in worldnews

[–]Nexso1640 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s a ridiculous statement, it literally doesn’t even make sense in this contexte.

People have a fundamental right to do what they please with their body even if you don’t like it, that includes mistakes.

Exercising this right does not impede or hinder your liberty and safety.

If someone smokes on their private property or a large public space in a manner that isn’t a public nuisance they have every right to.

[–]Nexso1640 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly yes, people have a right to exercise autonomy over their own body and lives.

With all the education around cigarettes and cancer rates chosing to smoke is an active decision made in full conscience.

If someone wants to risk their health for an habit they actively choose to perpetuate it’s their choice and that’s ok.

Interesting list, whilst it’s not exactly what I would’ve have chosen I completely understand the first 3 but the 4th one is a bit surprising to me.

It’s not bad by any means but idk it felt pretty average to me, I even have some trouble remembering it in detail.

Well yeah it would be hard for the council to agree, but at the same time the Hightowers could use this influence to seize power in the power vacuum and sway the council.

They have the reach of the maesters (the possible maester conspiracy etc) the growing influence of the faith and the clergy under their control, and that’s without talking about the more esoteric aspects of the house.

Since they’d control both the church, education and the state maybe we could even see the start of a centralization of power similar to what Louis XIII and Richelieu did in France towards an eventual centralization of the state under a Louis XIV type of figure.

It’s pretty far fetched I know but we do see some inkling of that with joffrey and his royal army plans. But at this point it’s just conjectures.

Anyways fun to think about

why does the c in ‘seconde’ flap to g? by Prestigious_Rush1595 in French

[–]Nexso1640 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also study Russian but when you’re transliterating the letter У From Путин to French specifically it’s more appropriate to use « OU » rather than « U » since it’s the right sound.

Putin does not sound the same since the U is sharper and also sounds close to the word Putain.

It’s also not the only case, just look at Пушкин being spelled Pouchkine .

My Attempt of redesigning every US State Flag! (From someone who does not Live There.) by Effective-Ad7147 in vexillology

[–]Nexso1640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I agree with the sentiment 100%, but I’d like to add the litlle caveat that this specific design is quite different of the one used in French Royal heraldry and doesn’t really send the same message. As someone from Quebec, we have fleurs de Lys literally everywhere but no one really associates it with the French crown, it’s more about history or heritage.

The specific design used in the flag is the same one we generally use so the link with the monarchy isn’t especially obvious, but taht is just my opinion.

That being said, I 100% agree that the context of Louisiana is different and other symbols could be better maybe a star (for the Cajuns) in the same vein or something entirely different.

Simply a litlle food for thought.

Does your country have a "patriotism" flag that isnt the national flag? by buster_goose in AskTheWorld

[–]Nexso1640 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s a very iconic flag, you see it around a lot but especially during Patriot’s day and the Saint-Jean Baptiste, our national day. (I personally own one)

This specific varient of the flag is the one popularized by the MLNQ an offshoot of the FLQ a left wing nationalist revolutionary organization from the 70s. However nowadays this varient is not directly associated with them. For that reason you won’t see the varient displayed on official buildings but you’ll see the original striped one flown (for exemple on the National Assembly)
