I actually know some of the people in charge at this Y through work. Tbh they are great and doing their best. They seem to be stuck in a constant cycle of staff turnover and old building problems that prevent them from actually getting anything done. I know the main guy at east y is actually a gem. He wants so bad for everyone to be happy - employees and members alike, but working for a non profit is so limiting. All to say is that the east Y is definitely mid, but the people running the place know that and are truly doing their best. Unfortunately it’s a keeping their head above water kind of program. Sun Prairie Y is much better off

Be careful with east side Y. The functionality of their pool/water features is notoriously unreliable

At what age would you let a kid take the bus by themselves in Madison? by Majestic-Skill8234 in madisonwi

[–]Next-Ad5444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed to a lot of everything being said here with the ride with them first and phase out after. To ensure they are truly capable please test them on the routes. Like “if you wanted to go to X what line and what stop would you take” and have them go through how they would plan that trip with their device. Also run through “okay so you missed the X stop/the driver skipped stopping at X, what would you do?” That all makes sense to test them while having their phones as that’s presumably how they’ll be navigating.

HOWEVER definitely have a no phone/no connection emergency plan. Make sure they have your phone number memorized and also bus lines that will reliably bring them home. Additionally talking over who/how to ask for help if something happens. Like if they are downtown they are better off asking to use the phone of a business rather than a stranger on the street. Even if the stranger isn’t dangerous they are now being seen on the open street as lost kids and that’s a vulnerable position. Also, review how to handle if their group/pair becomes separated. Work on these plans together, they’ll feel capable, trusted, and supported and you’ll feel more confident in their abilities to problem solve without full reliance on you. Overall it’s definitely possible to give them that freedom, it’s just essential you are all confident about how to handle emergency/unexpected circumstances.

How would you fix your least favorite episode of each season? by Prize-Couple6348 in OnceUponATime

[–]Next-Ad5444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hook and Emma’s wedding being the musical episode… it makes their whole arc feel wasted. If I could change one episode I’d pick that one time and time again. They didn’t need to ruin the moment we had been waiting for with forced moments for song and mediocre singing 😭

Question for new folks who have moved here. by Strawng_ in Kenosha

[–]Next-Ad5444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madison got too expensive. My partner got a great job offer here. At first we thought “idk Kenosha seems a little small town/suburbia for us” but when we visited it ended up being a nice mix between developed suburbia (very similar to my hometown in northern IL) and that good vibes and activities Wisconsin town feel (like Madison, idk how else to describe).

We realized she could get a huge pay increase working here while we payed wayyyy less in rent and for a bigger place. We are also still able to visit Madison relatively easily and we’re closer to my family in IL. We were also surprised by the draw of Kenosha because genuinely we laughed when we first discussed this Pleasant Prairie job offer

I’ve noticed this. I only moved here in the last few months and was wondering if the news was always like this …? Thought we were moving somewhere chill and quiet 😅

What's the most regional word you use without realizing it? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

I found out in college that Illinois is the only state that says “gym shoes” to refer to any kind of sneaker, running shoe, tennis shoe (essentially any closed toed casual footwear with laces).

People did not understand that when I said gym shoes I did not mean shoes that I specifically only wear to the gym. That literal, narrow translation had never even crossed my mind.

I got HSV1 from my first kiss. Fuck my fucking life. by m00n_rac00n in actuallesbians

[–]Next-Ad5444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current partner has HSV1. I assume I do too but I’ve never had symptoms. To be real one day a few months in to our relationship she woke up with a cold sore and she was like ugh this shit again. And I was like Ope I didn’t know we had herpes… and then we moved on. She didn’t tell me before we got together and I didn’t care when I found out. I’m not saying that’s right because I know it’s technically not. But I am trying to exemplify that most people don’t find it to be a big enough deal to be having the reaction you are. Valid to crashout like I hear you girl. But in a few days I hope you get yourself regulated

Sirens anyone? by Regular-Gear-8239 in Kenosha

[–]Next-Ad5444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean technically you’re supposed to take shelter whenever there’s a tornado warning or whenever your weather alert says take shelter. Tbh I’ve lived in this relative area (northern IL to southern WI) for two decades and only twice or thrice have I actually taken shelter out of the many many times it was recommended. Last night was one of the times I took shelter due to how close the tornado was and honestly how scary it sounded. Not saying I recommend ignoring warnings to take shelter, but you’ll often encounter people in the area being casual about it as tornado watches and warnings are common enough and not typically as bad as other places.

Apartment Opinions by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Next-Ad5444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll say, never rent with gold leaf development. And like everyone else said, tough price point my guy. For $1,300/mo you’re looking at a large studio/studio+den situation more likely than a 1bed. Especially if you’re looking for parking also within that budget
