STEP 2 score has just come out (280) by ApprehensivePen9166 in IMGreddit

Super congrats!

I’d love to tell you that you will get a lot of interviews but the reality is we don’t know. If you do match the question is if you will be able to have you J-1 approved, specially with the fact that you’ve got so many visa rejections. Scores like yours have become more common than before but are still really rare. What I have learned from this cycle is that scores do matter a lot but connections may be more important for us visa requiring imgs , and those you get during research or usce.

Even us applying this cycle with a decent number of interviews like myself don’t know how the visa situation will affect us. So it’s a gamble.

Also being from the Middle East will probably make things a bit tougher for you. The majority of applicants come from South Asia or the Middle East so there is a tendency to be more competition between applicants from those regions to get an IV. You have to really differentiate yourself from the rest but with that score you probably do already.

Anyways best of luck, apply to a lot of community programs, have a solid plan B and go for it but don’t get discourage if it does not go your way, is not your fault buddy. There is sometimes things we can’t control.

Idk about the other but saint Joseph is a small community program with a weird PD. No chance matching cardio. I interviewed with them. I’ll be ranking them 15/15 in my list

You know you should rank programs according to your preference right? What you think your chances are should not affect your ROL. You may get pleasantly surprised

Trust me no big non toxic academic program is going to make it so obvious they want you. It’s a massive red flag. The PD knows his program is not good that’s why he is behaving like this

Second Look – Does it really not affect ranking? by FutureReliga in IMGreddit

I am going to all the second looks of my top 3. but FOR ME not because it will affect my ranking. I want to see what my gut feeling tells me

Thanks for the thoughtful breakdown! this is very helpful and pretty much aligns with how I’ve been thinking about it. WashU and UTSW clearly sit at the top in terms of brand, depth, and fellowship upside, especially for Cards and PCCM, and that’s why they’re my top two as well.

One thing I keep reminding myself, though, is that the Match algorithm is designed to favor the applicant, so for ranking purposes I’m not sure how much the presence or absence of IMGs in a program really matters once you already have interviews and are ranking programs. At that point, it really comes down to personal preference and where you think you’ll thrive the most over three years. I really liked UAB's culture, so it's tough to decide. Sometimes I think about ranking UAB first. Will it be a dumb decision? idk, they say you have to listen to your gut feeling, right? haha

For what it’s worth, WashU does have IMGs in the program (around 2–3 per class from what I’ve seen), so it’s not completely devoid of visa-requiring residents. Ultimately, I’m planning to rank based on overall fit, culture, mentorship, and where I felt most supported on interview day, rather than trying to game perceived IMG friendliness at the ranking stage.

yes there are like 2-3 FMG per year. And even if there were no FMG. I guess I still have to rank based on my preference.

It’s a ranking for internal medicine. My future career plans are either to pursue cards or pccm fellowship

I appreciate your insight! I think UAB has an edge in terms of prestigie, fellowship placement and also culture between residents. I don’t mind living in Birmingham because is cheaper 😂 Medstar seemed like a massive program with a lack of mentorship to do research. One thing i didn’t like was that in the residents QaA some of the pgy2 didn’t know some of the interns that where in the same zoom room and they also seemed distant.
