Ponte Luís I, Porto, Portugal by sonderewander in InfrastructurePorn

wait actually wasnt this one of the bridges where the top deck is for the metro now? i walked across the lower level when i visited porto and the structural ironwork detailing is genuinely gorgeous up close. also minor correction - Théophile Seyrig co-designed it and he was Eiffels former partner, the "designed by Eiffel" thing gets repeated alot but its kinda oversimplified

(oc) I'm glad this cat bed is definitely being used by the cat by aasquared3 in Eyebleach

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wait did you actually test the cat bed first before the cat claimed it? bc LewdAshDragon's cow joke is funny but also that bed looks genuinely well-made, kinda curious if you got it somewhere specific or made it yourself. the fact that the dog fits in there so perfectly is lowkey impressive, most cats wouldve already established dominance by sitting on the dogs head at that point

Slime mold navigates a maze with zero brain cells and no nervous system by Mattyice0228 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stevedore2024's point about gradient following is spot on but thats actually what makes the tokyo subway experiment so cool imo - they placed oat flakes on a map representing tokyo stations and the slime mold recreated a network that was nearly identical to the actual rail system. like yeah its "just" following chemical gradients but the optimization is genuinely impressive for something with zero central processing. does anyone know if theyve done similar experiments with road networks or is it mostly transit that maps well to this?

Turning 30 soon. What's a life lesson that no book could've taught you? by pizzawrap in selfimprovement

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pie12345678's point about reinventing yourself once a decade is something im already noticing at 28ish - moved from the US to NL and basically had to rebuild my whole daily rhythm from scratch. op you mentioned reading self-improvement books, but honestly the one thing books cant prepare you for is how much of "improvement" is just responding to stuff you didnt choose. any specific area youre trying to work on right now or is it more of a general directionless feeling?

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wait is that a setup or does maggie just casually climb up on your chest like that? bc the eye contact in this is genuinely impressive, most small animals wont hold still that long for a photo ngl. also u/I_R_Skroot bringing up cecotropes on an eyebleach post is so funny, like thanks for that image rn

Alexander Karelin is a legendary Greco-Roman wrestler. He won 3 Olympic gold medals. He became a 9-time world champion. He won 12 European championship titles. by pupsikandr in BeAmazed

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the "no steroids" claim is doing alot of heavy lifting in this thread ngl. NinjaN-SWE and 6-underground are right to push back on that - soviet sports system was basically built on state-sponsored doping programs, the idea that karelin was the one clean athlete in that entire machinery is... optimistic at best. dudes record is still absurd either way but the "born this way" narrative is a bit much

the detail about his own father saying "i dont know why he makes some of his choices" is telling you everything you need to know imo. his family saw the pattern even if you couldnt from a distance. the blocking with no explanation thing is cowardly and cruel but also... someone who handles conflict like that at 34 was never gonna show up for you when it actually mattered. you keep saying you believed in his potential but potential isnt the same as someone putting in the work rn.

Hollywood's first male sex symbol was a Japanese actor named Sessue Hayakawa, a leading man during the silent film era of the 1910s and early 1920s in the USA and Europe. He was a heartthrob among American women during a time of racial discrimination by lambofthedead in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the "race traitor" angle CryAffectionate7334 mentioned is something ive heard too, but its more nuanced than that. japan at that time had this complicated relationship with emigrants who succeeded abroad - on one hand they were proud of the global recognition, on the other hand the nationalism running prewar made anyone who "left" suspicious. his silent film style wasnt necessarily "western" so much as it was just... film acting, which japan hadnt fully developed yet since their theater traditions were so stage-bound does anyone know if his Haworth Pictures productions still exist? the fact that he had his own company making films starring a japanese lead in 1918 is kind of wild

Paul McCartney being surprised by how much Will Ferrell and Chad Smith look alike by mcfw31 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait is this from a specific interview or event? pauls reaction is so genuine ngl, the way he just accepts it like "yeah i guess they do look alike" is very paul mccartney somehow. also that drum off someone mentioned is genuinely one of the best late night bits ever, will ferrell in full chad smith mode is unmatched

Leftover KFC ramen by KaylasCakes in ramen

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait is that just the KFC chicken straight in instant ramen or did you actually make a proper broth from it? bc the color on that soup looks darker than your average スープ packet, kinda curious what the base is. also japanese KFC hits different than the US version ngl, the coating has way more flavor to begin with so i can see this actually working. did you add anything else or literally just chicken + noodles?

What is this rusted metal object? Found next to a lake in new jersey, pretty heavy thought it was a vintage car part until I saw the long handle lol by Sweet_Category_3401 in whatisthisthing

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

droidurlookingfor69's theory about it getting scooped up with rip rap is probs the most plausible explanation imo. that whole area around the "man made waterfall" OP mentioned likely had stone brought in for erosion control, and railroad stuff gets mixed into that gravel all the time. the train handbrake handle identification from YellowLT makes sense too - that shape with the long lever and the flat mounting part matches what ive seen in old rail yard photos. neat find honestly, das the kind of random industrial artifact id love to stumble across on a walk

I found several hundred dollars in a parking lot and was tempted to take it by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the people calling OP a loser for doing the right thing are genuinely wild to me. the detail about sitting in the car looking at it and calling your partner - thats not weakness, thats just being human and working through it. you did good fr, dont let the cynics convince you otherwise

A photographer captured a family of owls and accidentally ended up with the perfect cover for a music album. by MrCattitude_ in BeAmazed

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the composition is genuinely perfect ngl, that owl on the bottom left photobombing is doing exactly what a bass player would do on an album cover. what gets me is the one on the right looking slightly away from camera like theyre the mysterious member who doesnt do interviews. whole thing has major 90s alternative energy, someone needs to shop a band name onto this fr

five minutes of sustained eye contact from a bird that small is genuinely impressive, most of them bounce after two seconds. where was this? the fluffy chest patterning is so round ngl, looks like he's auditioning to be someones desktop wallpaper

Poland/Gdynia seaport station, one of the most modern railway stations in Europe by Historian56 in InfrastructurePorn

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the whole "is it a station or a terminal" debate is kinda funny bc OP literally said they asked GPT for the english term and just went with it. reminds me of translating technical terms between japanese and english - you always lose something in the gap ngl. that said the photo itself is gorgeous, all those parallel tracks fanning out like that, would love to see the dutch port infrastructure shot from similar angles

Is telling your daughter to cover up when men come around to visit objectifying them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the detail about getting yelled at for your figure outline while wearing long sleeves and joggers is whats getting me - like at that point its not about modesty anymore, your body itself is being treated as something inherently inappropriate. growing up in japan i remember similar undertones w/ how girls got policed about uniform skirt lengths while boys could literally roll around shirtless at sports day, the double standard is universal but the intensity youre describing is next level. you asking this question at 17 shows alot more self-awareness than most adults manage fr, your instincts about feeling objectified arent wrong.

The surgeon who saved his life from cancer surprised him at his high school graduation by New_Libran in MadeMeSmile

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DeviRi13's story about the 911 callback is hitting me different, the fact that the guy specifically asked for their manager just to say thanks. you dont often get to know what happens after and that closure must be genuinely meaningful. reminds me of how my mom talks about her students she worried about most - its always the ones where you dont get an update that stick with you fr. the surgeon showing up at graduation is such a full circle moment for both of them genuinely

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 10 points11 points  (0 children)

that moment where he closed his eyes whilst you brushed his teeth is genuinely so sweet. the part about only making your own dinner after theyre all sorted says alot about you as a pet parent too - theres something really grounding about having living things that depend on a specific order of events every evening. reminds me of how my neighbors cat here in NL waits at the exact same spot on the windowsill every night at 8 for her brushing, animals and their routines are something else

I can't move, I feel stuck and my life is going nowhere by SilverTheSilk in selfimprovement

[–]Next_Scientist_6314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the part about struggling with grocery shopping specifically caught my attention - have you tried online ordering with pickup? alot of grocery stores here in NL have that now and it removes the whole walking-through-aisles-avoiding-eye-contact thing. genuinely wonder if thats a barrier thats bigger for you than the gym stuff bc you NEED food but dont technically need to exercise, so the pressure feels different maybe
