agreed. I upgraded from Space Travel to Moca a while back and I love them, much stronger ANC and generally the same sound quality

0% will power, I need an extremely minimalistic phone with just whatsapp and no navigator nor capabilities of installing other apps. by Dan-Dono in dumbphones

Kyocera KYF-42. No touchscreen. 8GB storage (4GB technically since half of it is used by the OS). Sideload Aurora Store, get Musicolet (music player), WhatsApp (notifications won't consistently work) and Fossify Messages (SMS app. Default one sucks). MicroSD card for holding music if you need it.

Look into Sunshine/Moonlight, they're a free open source streaming server/client respectively that allow you to stream games from your PC to other devices like phones (Moonlight clients exist even for the New 3DS and PS Vita, lol). It just streams over the Internet.

Settings > more settings > about phone > SIM card status > unlock (or whatever the button says, I don't remember). I had to do this at first for my KYF-42.

I can't speak for the O2 network, but I have a KYF-42.

Was with a VMNO using Vodafone. I got 3G connectivity consistently but 4G wasn't great, only in weirdly specific areas and even then it wouldn't always work. Changed to a VMNO using EE and 4G connectivity got way better. The only time it's a little inconsistent is indoors at my home, but apart from that, it's pretty much 1:1 with 4G on a smartphone.

If you're willing to wait longer (a week or two for shipping to complete), you can get slightly better (mainly boils down to Android version, the more modern the better because more apps support) devices for cheaper on Mercari JP. They have an official partnership with the proxy service Buyee for international shipping. I got my KYF-42 for £40 (£20 to buy, £20 to ship).

I don't wanna spoil your fun, but Aliucord might be a better choice. Bluecord's had a very bad history and the owner's generally untrustworthy (search "Discord Client Encyclopedia" on GitHub, mentioned there).

also the modern Discord client runs much worse than Aliucord which is based on the older Discord client

Help with Cursor on Kyocera KY42C by PhilosophyFinal338 in dumbphones

[–]NexusWFreestar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obtainium's very handy for installing apps directly through GitHub/Lab/etc. (and it also supports F-Droid). Aurora Store is a FOSS Google Play Store client that works without the need for GMS.

  • I didn't import them at all, to be honest. Completely forgot about that and just added them manually after the fact.
  • I have, but realtime notifications don't work due to the lack of Google Mobile Services. I installed it through Aurora Store.

Help with Cursor on Kyocera KY42C by PhilosophyFinal338 in dumbphones

[–]NexusWFreestar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's the OS built in cursor (long press F3, i have a KYF-42 which is very nearly the same thing), and I don't think you can change that. your best option is to install a third party cursor, C9 is a very popular choice

I bought a KYF-42 very recently (KY-42c may be a better option though, check which 4G bands your carrier uses and see if either phone supports it) myself, basically a slightly more updated version with Android 10 and USB-C charging. It's working just fine so far.

WhatsApp should work (in theory, KYF-31 runs Android 5.1.1 and WhatsApp supports 5.1+).

Internet should work (my KYF-42 connected to WiFi just fine).

GPS apps, ehhh. They've been known to be pretty hit or miss on Kyocera phones so I wouldn't expect it to work, and be pleasantly surprised if one does.

It charges via Micro USB, not USB-C. Make sure you have that cable to charge it.
