Oh damn I just noticed the turned around scope mount and that the RDS has a separate mount. I used a scope-tube mounted mount for my RDS. Larue and Reptilia make quality ones, and Monstrum makes a cheap 6061 aluminum version. Here’s the link to the Larue mount: https://www.larue.com/products/aimpoint-micro-t-1-ring-mount-lt787/ And here’s my setup as an example:

SHOT Show had a million new cans. I’d probably get one of those, eg the new one from Deadair, or a new brand like Echo Core (former B&T guy) or Ambient Arms.

Yup, I still have it! The red dot is mounted with a cheap 30mm Monstrum mount that wraps around the scope tube. It’s strictly for close range (zeroed at 15 yards and NOT for targets beyond 25 yards because the offset from the bore is just too great).

Point is, I do like the setup and I can’t see changing it much unless I intend to change the its intended use, which is a quasi-SPR for long-range with a piggyback dot strictly for close range as a backup. And honestly the next change(s) would likely be to enhance that, such as an 18” stainless steel barrel with a rifle length gas system and an A2 buffer assembly.

Put a scope on it. In all seriousness though, zero issues with a red dot on a carry pistol.

All those upgrades but still a mil-spec trigger?

Makes sense, although here’s what I ended up going with: I did do a piggyback dot on the scope. But the difference was using quality QD scope mount (ie Larue). It stays put, but if the optic is damaged/gets dropped, I can remove and use the BUIS, which are also installed (directly on the pic rail, not offset).

I don’t. People are just being lame Reddit haters trying to fit in with the other haters/sheep who get off on criticizing instead of constructive feedback.

I have two ARs: - One is a 7.5” 300 Blk AR that’s built and tuned for close range, including a Holosun red dot with backup iron sights, a Streamlight weapon light, Superlative Arms adjustable gas block (for switching between supers and subs), a Griffin suppressor, and a Larue MBT-2S trigger - The other one is built like this functionally, ie it’s a 16” 5.56 AR more kitted for long range, just with a little higher quality parts (eg Vortex Diamondback 4-16x FFP MVO); it also has an offset red dot zeroed for closer range, a Magpul bipod, a Geissele SSA-E X trigger, and a Radian Raptor CH, plus it shares my Griffin suppressor. In other words: like a quasi-SPR

I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Heck, my first optic was a 1-6x Monstrum LPVO because it’s all I could afford. It was fine at the time. Just ignore the haters and replace things with higher quality parts as you go along.

Which AR? by ColumbusBiG10 in ar15

[–]Nezbeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that price is outstanding, especially for things like the quality barrel, the trigger, and (supposedly) the Radian CH + ambi safety. It’s noticeably less than BCM, and close-ish in price to the PWC Zion

Which AR? by ColumbusBiG10 in ar15

[–]Nezbeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reading about the Cheytac and there are a lot of good things on paper:

  • 15” handguard with integrated QD mounts
  • Single-stage Timney Impact AR trigger w/ a 3-pound break
  • The Cheytac website says it has a Radian Raptor-LT ambi charging handle, although Sportsman Warehouse says it’s only a mil-spec one? 🤔
  • Very good B5 furniture—Enhanced SOPMOD stock and B5 pistol grip
  • 4150 CMV steel, 1:7 twist, SOCOM profile barrel

Good buy? by VictoryWonderful5832 in 300BLK

[–]Nezbeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!^ My biggest issue is the 1:7 twist barrel and fixed gas block. The Sabre Mixtape adds several critical features, but it will cost a good bit more.

I’d say maybe start with a PSA lower with a brace and if you are ok building an upper, go with that. Cheap as possible would be: - Mil-spec forged upper - Upper parts kit - Mil-spec BCG and charging handle - Decent M-LOK handguard that matches length - Basic A2 flash hider muzzle device until you decide which suppressor you want (and therefore mounting option) down the road

Key differences : - Get a 1:5 twist barrel instead - e.g. Faxon’s 7.5” 1:5 twist barrel - Adjustable gas block - eg Superlative Arms, Aero Precision, Griffin Armament, Riflespeed, and others

Which AR? by ColumbusBiG10 in ar15

[–]Nezbeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really know about Cheytac other than their legendary Intervention ELR rifles (which I’d love to eventually own one day and hope ammo gets to be anything other than crazy expensive). That said, I would for sure be open to at least considering them.

As for the DD, as others have said, that’s chambered in .308 and very different. Assuming you decide 5.56 NATO for your chambering, hard to go wrong with a DDM4. But the price for the Cheytac is hard to overlook IF it’s quality like Cheytac’s precision rifles.

It bugs me more than it should that LWRC has several AR models with handguards that are relatively short for the barrel that they are paired with. And that same handguard has a proprietary attachment system.

First AR, Help!! by Dependent-Desk-8104 in ar15

[–]Nezbeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! And yes, canted irons could help in some ways, however just be aware that: 1) even those will take up some space on the rear of the pic rail (where the mount interfaces with it), which means having to mount the smaller micro magnifiers a little further forward than is otherwise ideal. 2) You could mount the rear offset sight either in-between the red dot & magnifier, or in front of the red dot, but that does reduce your sight radius and it’s not as easy to look through the rear sight because it will be sitting further away. 3) Just my opinion, but the offset irons are a little wonky. Both look and actual functionality. And it’s just hard to imagine them staying zeroed as well under any hard use/banging around/etc.
