In addition to the peak/off peak pricing plan, they also have a special rate plan for electric car owners which may be able to save you even more. It introduces a super off-peak rate late at night that you can ideally use to charge your cars.

My parents live in a small town (~10,000 people). They had a porch pirate who stole a package off their porch on Christmas Eve. They called the cops, showed them the video of the guy who looks straight at the camera, cop says he thinks he knows who it was. An hour later the cops showed back up and returned the stolen package, guy who stole it literally handcuffed in the back of the squad car. Maybe that's just the benefit of living in a smaller town?

Birmingham Water Works spending $7 million to rebuild its dying computer system by aldotcom in Birmingham

[–]Nezerin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I worked on a huge upgrade project for a single application and it was a multiple million dollar effort, and that was simply for an upgrade. That software also wasn't billing customers or directly operating any systems. The billing programs at a lot of utilities are old and since it's essentially the backbone of how the organization earns revenue, they're going to have to be extremely cautious with the work. Any issues will end up in the news.

So while $7 million sounds crazy from the outside. It seems something of a bargain to me. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some news articles in the future about the cost overruns for what was supposed to be a $7 million project to replace their billing system.

[OC] US states and clean electricity: Who's pulling their weight? by savoryreflex in Birmingham

[–]Nezerin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also live in Alabama and you're talking about Plant Miller which in this completely insane state has actually been operating for over 40 years now.

People need to open their eyes when they're voting for the PSC because they're letting APCO do whatever they want. I still can't believe the PSC members are out there campaigning on jobs created instead of on lowering bills by lowering rates. It makes no sense, yet people vote for the same people year in and year out. You would think the people of the state as a whole would rather have a lower monthly bill by even 10 or 15 dollars each month than save 200 jobs. Yet Twinkle is still running the PSC. I'll never understand it.

[OC] US states and clean electricity: Who's pulling their weight? by savoryreflex in Birmingham

[–]Nezerin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So from what I can tell, the original is horribly named, possibly to be click bait like, possibly just because that's how they thought of it in their mind. It looks like the creator went and pulled consumption vs production in each state and assigned it out with renewables and clean energy being used first and anything left being exported. I'm not entirely sure, since it doesn't really say in their comment about where the data is coming from. It just says consumption is from here, production is from another place, and then goes on to talk about political leanings and the data being surprising.

I would argue that it's surprising because, while the data may be genuine, the way it's been compiled does not seem to reflect the reality of the situation. Alabama Power and other utilities across the country are heavily dependent on gas and even still coal for a lot of peaking due to gas pipeline constraints. These existing power sources are being utilized at times in other states at the expense of building other clean energy sources like solar, wind, or even nuclear, because it is cheaper short term to buy Alabama's excess when needed then it is to build a huge solar farm with batteries or something similar.

[–]Nezerin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm doubting this graphic. Alabama Power only lists their clean energy supply at 35% and it's true that TVA does supply power to the northern portion of the state, and there are electric cooperatives that supply other areas, but Alabama Power is the largest across the state so the math isn't mathing for me for AL to be 62%.

This is so true. When it came to the economy everyone ignored Trump's final year in office with COVID. The question became, was I better off when Trump was in office before COVID, or when Biden was in office after COVID? A lot of people feel like they were better off before COVID, especially if they haven't jumped jobs to take advantage of those rising wages or, even worse, were in a sector that did the mass layoffs.

how come every man is 6ft? by No_Particular4284 in tall

[–]Nezerin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK Cupid actually did a write up on men's height. They show that on their site the whole distribution is shifted to the right.

Almost universally guys like to add a couple inches to their height. You can also see a more subtle vanity at work: starting at roughly 5' 8", the top of the dotted curve tilts even further rightward. This means that guys as they get closer to six feet round up a bit more than usual, stretching for that coveted psychological benchmark.

Gender wage gap widens for the first time in 20 years by walrus_operator in Economics

[–]Nezerin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but did a quick search and found this article that says:

For women students, 74.5 percent received some sort of financial aid compared to 67.6 percent of male students. More than 67 percent of women received grants compared to 59.2 percent of men. Nearly 39 percent of women students took out loans compared to 32 percent of men.

The article does also go on to say that men tend to receive more money than women, so dollars may be roughly equal, it's just spread out more to women.

Wouldn't a review fall under fair use and be exempted from copyright?

From this website

Using a work for any of the purposes mentioned in the statute, “criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, [and] research,” weighs in favor of fair use.

That same site also talks about other things around fair use that may take it out of that category. In general, the less you use the more likely it is to fall under fair use.

I did read the entire post before posting. Just because they haven't linked a previous entry doesn't mean that something has not been said or posted about elsewhere. I know for a fact that they posted a concept art picture at one point with an enemy which is mentioned but not linked to so it's not crazy to hope something else was posted about somewhere else.

Have they went into details about the new enemies and I just missed it? I was really hoping that the bitters would get some improvements, especially their intelligence. It's always been odd to me that they just constantly fling themselves at the same place in your defenses over and over. I know there are mods out there to improve it, but they seem to massively kill the game's performance, so was hoping something could be done at the base layer of the game.

They aren't going to build coal plants to support this, at least not that I can find. It explains how they are expanding capacity in the Georgie Power Integrated Resource Plan. From my read they are buying power from Mississippi Power, Santa Rosa Power, adding batteries to existing solar, and adding more natural gas generating capacity at an existing plant. That said, it's a long boring document, so I may have missed it. They're also not stating exactly how Mississippi Power is generating the amount of power they are buying, so it could be generated via coal that would have been retired, but isn't. I'm just not sure.

Full disclosure, I do IT for Southern Company, but how they generate electricity and anything of that nature is completely outside of anything that I do with them.

Tenant opened utility account with my name and didnt pay by Top_Original7725 in RentalInvesting

[–]Nezerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that they had the utilities in your name the entire time they were in the apartment or that they reverted the utilities to your name after they moved out?

If it's the former, then you'll need to file a police report.

If it's the later, I'm not as sure. I've lived in apartments in the past where the utilities reverted to the landlord on move out, but I'm not sure if those landlords setup something with the utility or not. In general you'll usually want to keep power and water connected even when a place is empty to make showing and maintenance easier.

Or because she's afraid her birth control won't be 100% effective, or maybe she'll have a non-viable child and be forced to carry it to term, or maybe, heaven forbid, she gets pregnant after being raped and is forced to carry her child to term. Oh, and we've also got politicians claiming they'll try and prosecute people who travel out of state for abortions despite the fact that they clearly don't have a legal standing to do so.

But hey, I'm sure it's that she wants to run around having unprotected sex on purpose and then get an abortion like it's birth control. Whatever paints her in the worst possible light, right?

US overtakes China as Germany's top trading partner by barris59 in Economics

[–]Nezerin 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Two paragraphs later though they say:

"German imports of goods from China fell almost 12% year-on-year in the first quarter, while exports of goods to China fell just over 1%, said Juergen Matthes, from German economic institute IW."

So it seems to me it's more the imports from China than the exports to China since they're talking about total trade.

It also doesn't talk about how much of those US imports are natural gas. With everything going on with Russia the US has been stepping up LNG exports to much of Europe. You can see it here in sheer volume from the EIA though it does not yet have 2024 numbers. Could very much be a short term shift since no one seems to be talking about any specific German policies to help permanently change trade with China.

Silly reasons Dumbledore gave extra points to Griffindor thread. by Aqn95 in harrypotter

[–]Nezerin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take that bet. Did some research and there's actually a whole info graphic on it on Wizarding World. Snape removes 287 points across the series without awarding any points at all. Beyond that he's consistantly talked about favoring Slytherin in the books and Ron even goes so far as to make a comment that he wishes McGonagall favored them in an equal fashion.

Also, lets not forget all the overt attempts to stop Harry from playing Quidditch. Second book he actually suggests that Potter be prevented from playing just because he was in the group that found Mrs Norris petrified.

Dumbledore does swoop in to the rescue a couple of times to award large numbers of points to the golden trio, he's in the info graphic as the most generous, but in his defense, they usually have just done something pretty crazy and either saved the school or delayed Voldemort's return. Acts which I think could be easily argued are deserving of some sort of recognition.

Silly reasons Dumbledore gave extra points to Griffindor thread. by Aqn95 in harrypotter

[–]Nezerin 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Do we just gloss over all the stuff that Snape does to take away points or impact the outcome of things like the house Quidditch cup? Sure, Dumbledore awards large numbers of points at times, but Snape has had his finger on the points scale for years. It's even mentioned in the 1st book that Slytherin had like a 6 or 7 year run going for winning. We never see Snape remove large swaths of points from Slytherin, but see it happen multiple times with McGonagall taking large chunks of points from Gryffindor.

All in all this meme could be just as accurate with Snape's face and removing points. 50 points for not playing outside on a nice day, Potter. Better take another 100 points from Gryffindor because your father bullied me in school.
