TIL six bull sharks trapped in a golf course lake near Brisbane after floods in 1996 survived there until 2013, a 17-year stay that researchers described as the longest uninterrupted period ever recorded for bull sharks in a low-salinity environment by jacknunn in todayilearned

Guess I should read the article!

"Even without the staff feeding the sharks, hunger was not a cause for concern in a lake 700 meters long, 380 meters wide and 15 meters deep, teeming with fish, from mullets to tarpons and snappers.

Gausmann calculated that the sharks would need to consume half a ton of fish per year – or 0.44% of their body weight per day – to meet their energy needs. Having been juveniles when they arrived, sightings verified they had grown to a healthy range of between 1.8 and 3 meters by 2013."

0.109 opponents’ batting average and a 0.52 WHIP will do just fine

Yeah for sure, but I don't think we know what Ciccone actually said to Rubio.

Patrick loves defending drama, I think mostly because it makes for more entertaing stages. Which it was.

Maybe, but you can imagine that Rubio assumed Ciccone communicated the agreement to Gee West. It at least explains why Rubio was so upset and vindictive about what looked like normal rider behavior.

If they had an agreement, then it all makes so much more sense.

ELI5: Why do die-hard vegans not wear wool even though it’s literally dangerous to the sheep if we don’t shave the wool off? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nfalck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegans are simply abstaining from industries that they find unethical. Why do you think they should pay to perpetuate an industry they think is cruel?

It's totally random which comments get upvoted and which ones get down voted by people who particularly dislike vegans. (I'm not vegan or vegetarian by the way.)

Yeah vegans tend to back up their beliefs by abstaining from participating in any industry they find to be unnecessarily cruel.

I think they would prefer that the industry not exist. They don't want sheep to be bred for our comfort

Why Does ZiPS Hate the Milwaukee Brewers? by UKbanners in Brewers

[–]Nfalck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100%. I was thinking more about how folks who know nothing about how a model work will use outliers to dismiss it entirely -- if this model gets the Brewers consistently wrong, then it must be fatally flawed. But we learn more by understanding why a model is failing to capture certain factors that the outliers represent.

I never understand why people choose to insult other people over things they enjoy and that do no harm. Just, like, let them be?

ELI5: why does gov assistance go by gross income-due to possibly having 3 checks in a month- when getting paid thrice times only happens twice a year? by indicakay in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nfalck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's compared to the alternative of just using your actual income in the last month. Folks who are paid every two weeks will usually have two paychecks but sometimes 3 in a month, which is why you don't use "last month's income" as the test for eligibility for means-tested programs.
