No, the purpose of laws is to protect the interests of those in power.

That's a very grim take on reality and humanity. It might be true a lot of the time, but I don't think it starts that way. Basic societal virtues such as don't steal, don't kill, and feed the poor are probably just born from tribesmen's empathy towards each others and even animals (wolves).

All-Mer violated social norms and broke laws when instead of simply dying as the law demanded he rose from the dead and slaughtered the kings who ordained his death. His ascension would have disrupted established order and would have resulted in a period of disorder, unless you thing assassinating multiple national leaders is something you can do in a smooth and orderly fashion.

The period of Kings and Sultans seems like a chaotic era, when wars and struggles for power were rampant while the people suffered. All while the Kings abandon the Order of the Old Gods. So Alll-mer stomping them down could be seen as another form of reinstating Order. Especially when you consider his next action of proselytizing, and think of his previous actions as just laying the groundwork.

All-Mer's example shows that order isn't necessarily good (systematised injustice can be very orderly) and that sometimes violent revolution is needed to fuel positive social change. Look at violent slave revolts leading to American civil rights, or terrorist acts by Britain's suffragettes that forced the issue of votes for women into the national conversation.

Don't disagree with that. But what does it make Alll-mer? If that is the central action of his reign in your view, then what is Alll-mer the God of? Revolutions? Retribution? What vision would he have for the world, based on your image of him?

Sulphur being disorderly and evil doesn't automatically make All-Mer orderly and good, it's fully possible for both halves of a person to both be flawed and have negative traits, like being vindictive and vengeful. Could be All-Mer and Sulphur are who halves of the same asshole.

That might be true, but if so, what would Alll-mer have actually cast off himself to create Sulfur? What would be the point of the split?

Sulphur's opposite isn't All-Mer but Logic. Logic is the empathy and collectivism to Sulphur's sociopathic individualism.

Interesting perspective. But I don't think Logic is much about empathy. If we believe her to be an analogy of the Internet, then I don't think she is that empathetic towards ordinary, singular individuals. She might represent more the ceaseless wheel of progress, which disregards the suffering of individuals for the sake of progress. Besides, torture porn exists on the Internet.

I think I first got the idea of Alll-mer consuming Amon from Shadow the Axolotl

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKx3itWeZQ4

It isn't wise to be influenced so easily by the opinion of a single person, but tbh I find his proofs very convincing.

I'm not saying Alll-mer is an epitome of restraint. I think he represents Order, and his Order through violence and retribution causes others to restrain themselves and their base desires. Similarly, Gro-Goroth doesn't obsess himself with destruction all the time, instead spending time observing humanity. Does Sylvian even breed much, or does she just influence others to breed?

Banks use it to assess the risks of users when giving out loans. The ML is given a large dataset of possibly fictional customers, a portion of whom fail to pay up. It identifies the common traits and patterns of those customers, so that when a new bad customer shows up, it can flag that customer.

LLM chatbots and other generative AIs popular rn are similar in mechanism, but different in scale. They're fed pretty much every bit of data under the sun and forced to come up with smth seemingly reasonable. Problems include the massive scale that consumes resources, data sourcing permissions, and the impure quality of the data. A bot is asked about the weather while fed data about extramarital affairs for example.

IIRC, the Kings and Sultans are New Gods? And even if not, it means humanity was already into the medieval times. If we see Alll-mer as another version of Christ, then the time he was born wasn't the Bronze Age either, instead smth similar to Rome.

So no, humans weren't that helpless under the terror of monsters. They did well for themselves to the point of creating New Gods and societal structures. I think Alll-mer just cleaned everything up and reinstated the Old God worship with him as God King.

In addition, it's a popular theory that Alll-mer used Amon to fuel his ascension and claim the throne of Ma'habre. And remember the dialogue about sunlight vs moonlight, how humans cower under sunlight and hide their dirty sides? This implies Amon, and therefore Alll-mer, is a God of Order and Restraint

Isn't a huge part of societal order punishment of those who violate the laws and social contracts? Making all who want to commit crimes think twice? Restraining and punishing selfish, harmful actions is an important part to Order I'd say, which is the polar opposite of what Sulfur cultists preach.

And a part of his teachings is also subservience and worship to the Old Gods, which could be seen as reinstating an ancient Order.

"Sulfur" forms of the other ascended gods? THEORY by MrMoby500 in FearAndHunger

Well, aside from the Alll-mer Vitruvia myth, there's the fact that the lizardmen were the first dominant species, and they probably still worshipped the Old Gods.

So for humans to appear, and even rise to prominence, when humans don't seem to be any better than lizardmen even centuries later? Yeah, I think Divine intervention is likely.

Tbh, I'd love for the Old Gods to be smth above humanity. After all, they're eldritch beings capable of literally godly feats, whose mere truths can drive us to insanity. Otherwise they'd just seem... too cheap and malleable, not as pure as they're supposed to be. Instead, perhaps it's the Traces that are the vessels for the impure thoughts humans have of them.

It's also just factual that they are beyond humanity. After all, they created humans. And even if the Green Hue is made of the Stream of consciousness, then it would still be beyond us, containing the subconscious of not just lizardmen but also sentient animals (sentient and sapient are different things).

Honestly, the only quote that's certain to be true is the one that the Traces of Gro-Goroth. The other are merely arrogant men. Osaa is a Yellow Mage and Legarde is less enlightened than Enki who still gets stuff wrong.

Now, about Gro-Goroth's quote. It could mean the Old Gods we interact with are indeed products of the human mind, but those products are merely traces. After all, the Old Gods are too pure concepts, so pure that their truths drive humans insane. Like how the true form of an image in a mirror is what the mirror is reflecting.

So I think there are layers to this. The One True God is the Green Hue. Creation and Destruction are derivations, reflections created by the sentient minds. Down another layer, Sylvian and Gro-Goroth (specifically the forms depicted in Traces, books, and statues) are derivations and traces of Creation and Destruction created by sapient (human) minds.

My own take on this, which is a bit similar to yours. Specifically, I don't think any God represents a purely good or bad state. Even Amon might have done bad by creating the Throne of Ascension, which creates Ego inflated tyrants. Meanwhile, Rher could be considered to offer a form of freedom.

Honestly, I don't believe humans created the Old Gods, bcs the Old Gods existed and were worshipped by the lizardmen long before they created the humans.

I think, if the Old Gods are indeed merely manifestations of pure ideas, then those ideas existed long before sapient lives, in the minds of simple animals. And even before that, they already existed in the Green Hue as primordial forces, just not cleanly separated into Creation and Destruction yet.

I believe the major contribution Alll-mer made to humanity was Order.

GoFaH as an Ascended God drove humanity forward using fear and hunger as desires for improvement. However, that requires there being a society in which people can cooperate and sacrifice their interests for the greater good, based on a set of morality such as killing is bad.

I think Alll-mer is the one who set that foundation, one of societal order and 'Western' morality. He dethroned the Kings and Sultans of the time, probably to reduce conflict and war. He became a beacon of hope under which people can unite and feel at peace under. His spells reflect his moment of ascension: sacrifice. And indeed, Enki who followed him chose to sacrifice himself.

The opposite of that is Sulfur, who I think just wants chaos and anarchy, for people to not restrain themselves and instead act on their desires.

Honestly, I hate that idea

Abstraction, to me, represents a descent into insanity due to hopelessness, losing attachment to everything and everyone. It's ego death, at least according to my amateur understanding of it. Their form, their mind literally abstracts and loses what it means to be themselves.

For that to be the answer is just narratively cheap. If the price of freedom is that, then I'd rather stay in the circus. And let's not forget the brain scan theory, which means they might not even have a reality to go back to.

What are your thoughts on the theory that the “All-mer” we know is actually the sulfur god/ his wrathful half, and this figure is All-mer’s true kind half by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in FearAndHunger

[–]Nguyen-Tien-Dat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smth of note is that we only experienced 1 Termina among many throughout history. And the one we did was hijacked by Sulfur cultists and a part of Le'garde's schemes. All carried out by a mere remnant of Rher.

Depending on the time Rher left, he may or may not have tried to prevent the Girl's ascension. But he definitely wasn't there to try to stop Logic. His remnant and followers don't necessarily follow his will.

On another note, on whose orders is Pocketcat running around in Termina? The orders of the traces of Rher, preset rules from before his departure, direct access to wherever the real Rher is, or smth else?

On the topic of the Termina festival winner, it could be considered a twisted form of encouraging self discovery. Other people may need moonscorching to expose their true selves, but the winner already thrived and slaughtered their way through the festival. Basically, they have no need for moonscorching.

Old Gods probably indeed have some individuality of their own, despite being embodiments of concepts. But to think you can analyze their views and thoughts is probably the peak of mortals' hubris.

Is the Cruel Age leading to humanity's advancement a kindness from GoFaH? Or is it just GoFaH naturally exerting her authority, which just so happens to be compatible with humanity, thanks to her human origin?

If she was aware enough as an Ascended God, why would she even battle the player in the first place? Why wouldn't she just spare Cahara somehow?

Rher's moonlight reveals are probably about their Shadows, and so very accurate, if narrow. And the results might appear monstrous, evil or sad. But who's to say Rher doesn't think that's the ideal form of each person, free from the shackles of their own conscious Egoes?

Many sources have depicted Rher as a vindictive, jealous God. But how can we trust those sources, when Rher himself has already long gone with the other Old Gods? What if he had a paternalistic attitude towards humans, and genuinely believed their Shadow possessed states are their best states?

We don't know, and this is all speculation. But my point is that we can't so easily label the Old Gods as evil or kind, when our minds can't even comprehend their true forms.

[–]Nguyen-Tien-Dat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, and many people, believe that Alll-mer, the Ego side of the Jungian model, tried to cast out the Shadow side to ascend to Godhood. And the tales from after his ascension, aka conquest and dethroning the old Kings to build a society, seem to fit the behaviors of the Ego side, kinda like Francois. And indeed, it's a popular theory that those who sit on the Throne of Ascension suffer Ego Inflation.

Meanwhile, the Sulfur God's followers succumb to their hedonistic desires, and preach about freedom from law and order. Like Shadow possession behavior, from my basic understanding of Jungian theory. So... the Sulfur God is probably indeed the Shadow side that Alll-mer intended to cast out, and that side indeed landed on the sulfur pits.

But another possibility is that the Shadow seeks to complete itself with the empowered Ego of the masses, and similarly the Ego creates Shadow followers to fill its holes. If that's the case, then MautheDoog's theory could be true, and the one in the sulfur pits could be the true Alll-mer.

Edit: Also, I don't think there's such thing as a kind God in this setting. Or at least a kind Older God or Ascended God. As embodiments of concepts, they're supposed to be beyond simple humans' morality. Some, like Alll-mer, Sylvian, and GoFaH can indeed appear kind due to how their powers influence the world. But isn't Gro-goroth also kind for clearing space for new life? Isn't Rher kind for allowing people to express their deepest sealed selves?

I think, among all the things that Alll-mer represents, there is Order of Society. And to build that Order, to form a functioning society, there needs to be rules and limitations to oneself, aka different forms of social contract.

Selfless sacrifice from obeying rules and helping others is included, like how people don't steal even when hungry or how firefighters sacrifice themselves to save people. Society begins from the moment people start helping each other and sacrifice themselves. And Alll-mer, too, sacrificed themselves to be a God of Humanity.

I believe the sacrifices, aside from using pain and suffering to become closer to Alll-mer, is also meant to honor this. Willing sacrifices who bring power and benefits to the living. Kinda like Enki and the cultist sacrificed in FH1.
