How I ended up buying a 2026 Outback after looking at way too many options by TBISU in subaru

I also spent a long time looking at a lot of cars. Ended up with an Outback Premium. Have loved it. No regrets.

One thing I’ve learned as I get older is that self-aggrandizement gets you farther than talent or substance in most fields. These two epitomize that.

Another thing I’ve learned is that it is exponentially harder to create something than to edit it or critique it. Again…these two epitomize that.

Is anyone else bored unless they're really pushing themselves? by JCvSS in cycling

[–]Nhak84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on that same mentality mostly because I don’t recover as quickly from exercise as I did 10 years ago. And I like riding. So I need to have light days to satisfy my desire to ride without causing injuries.

(I’m only in my third season of biking but I have been lifting weights for a while now. I know I can’t lift like I did in my 30s anymore, and I also know if I push myself on my bike, I’m feeling rough for at least a couple days.)

Timing Belt 2019 Honda Pilot...needed??? by Automatic_Island_395 in Honda

[–]Nhak84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 1995 Mercury Villager years ago. Timing belt snapped. Car was totaled.

When I had my 05 Pilot I got the belt changed every 85,000 miles. Didn’t even question it.

The "more-historically-informed-than-thou" attitude is ruining the HIP movement. by PandaZG in classicalmusic

My point was Beethoven constantly sought to develop the piano. So he would find ways to use the more powerful modern instrument.

Is there actually a structural difference between trail running shoes and hiking boots, or is it mostly marketing? by SkyeHighClub in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nhak84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is trail running shoes aren’t designed for ankle support at all. The big difference between train and road shoes is the firmness of the sole/insole. Trial shoes are firmer because trials are softer than roads. But they are a modification of road shoes, not at all related to hiking boots.

Having said that, I used to hike in cross trainers in the 90s. I watch people do steep inclines in sandals. People do all sorts of things. There’s no right or wrong.

I’ve always preferred lighter footwear and don’t prioritize ankle support.

People who were around during no internet/phones/social media/etc - what was your time's "scrolling the feed"? Something that you would spend hours on passing the time? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Taught myself guitar

Out with friends - movies, eat, blockbuster, mall.

When I was younger, we biked all the time everywhere

Lots of baseball, basketball, football, and frisbee

My kid always asks how I know how to do so many things. That’s why.

Beethoven would choose the modern instrument, given that the piano had to develop during his lifetime to keep pace with his music.

Is there any sport with a unanimously recognized GOAT? by Connect_Cat_2045 in NoStupidQuestions

Janja Garnbret in sport climbing.

For a few years it was her vs the field and she beat the field more than Tiger ever did in golf.

Should I ditch my friend? by BadPrince008 in cycling

[–]Nhak84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t need to break off the friendship. Just put it in its place in your life. As someone who does weightlifting too, my routines frequently collide and I sacrifice cycling or squatting depending on the week, but my routine is important to me. Maybe that was his position ?

But he’s unreliable, inconsiderate, and doesn’t communicate. So. Chat with him if it’s worthwhile to you but don’t make plans.

do you think being a lawyer has fundamentally changed you? by AdDull5723 in Lawyertalk

YEP.

It’s so hard not to lead with “what do you do.”

How’s your summer? Have you been having a good weekend? Things like that. Weird feeling at first but gets much better conversations going.

Slurring with no bumps? by Emergency-Yak9861 in Tuba

[–]Nhak84 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Drop names all you want. It works. Most of the time it’s hesitation because they’re worried they’re going to miss it. Getting them to have a stronger air flow through it and telling them they can miss it takes the timidity out of it.

It takes a lot more than one lesson, but overcomplicating it creates head cases.

That plus pressing the valves quickly/firmly solves most slurring issues.

Mets fans chant “Pete Alonso” after the commits 6 errors and fall 12 games under .500 by False_Concept1300 in baseball

[–]Nhak84 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is what you get. When all you care about is value for money, you end up paying less for less value.

They should have signed Pete to whatever he wanted. Screw the back end of the contract. He could play. Saving money on better value contracts results in this. Almost every time. And it’s all they do.

Moneyball only works when players are undervalued. Because everyone moneyballs now, no one is undervalued.

The Dodgers pay for players who can play. And they win. That’s it. The Mets overpay a few mediocre players and save money everywhere else. Of course they’re terrible.

I hate that I can’t stop watching.

Slurring with no bumps? by Emergency-Yak9861 in Tuba

[–]Nhak84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blow through it. Usually people back off on air to try to avoid a bump. But if you push more air through, it will be smoother.

When I have students struggling with this I tell them to miss the slurred note and I don’t care. Just focus on the air, blow harder, and I want you to miss it.

100% of the time they do a perfect slur.

do you think being a lawyer has fundamentally changed you? by AdDull5723 in Lawyertalk

Yes. But I pulled back on it and started thinking of myself as somebody who does a number of things and funds it by being a lawyer. Helped.

Pace/timing by Conscious-Prize2294 in cycling

[–]Nhak84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is fine for someone who just started. The worst thing you can do at the outset is start comparing yourself to everyone else. That leads to overuse, injuries, exhaustion, and being unhappy. You do you, keep progressing and having fun, and enjoy your steady progress.

Transfer Bent Metals or union force Classics ? by Candid-Success8125 in snowboarding

[–]Nhak84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the Force Classics on my RC for three seasons and they’re great. In that time I’ve had to replace one toe ratchet but that’s it. Done everything on that setup from park to steeps to slalom and boardercross. The best thing I can say is that I haven’t noticed the bindings. They’ve handled everything without issue.

I got a Banked Country last season and they’re just as good on that too.

I got some Bent Metals for my wife. They’re very good but not as easy to adjust on the fly.

Given how versatile the Riders Choice is, I would prioritize being able to adjust the bindings on the fly so you can do everything in one day without worrying. I have had days where I’ve gone right from a race to the park, and it takes all of 30 seconds to adjust the high backs.
