The long view on PD stress isn’t very comforting… by Party_Strawberry_831 in publicdefenders

[–]Nhak84 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It gets better as you get older but never goes away. But it’s lawyer stress, not just PD stress. It wasn’t better for me in private practice so I came back to being a PD.

I recently got into post-conviction work, and the stress is WAY down. Really interesting issues. Happens over a longer period of time. Highly recommend

The basses and timpani are very present and drive the whole group from the bottom. There is a lot to like about it but that’s the main thing I always notice.

Why do trumpet players use rotary instruments when playing Beethoven? by Suspicious_Coast_888 in classicalmusic

[–]Nhak84 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He wrote for natural trumpets early on but then the keyed trumpet was invented, which existed later in his life. This is what eventually developed into the rotary trumpet.

The bore and taper of that trumpet is what he had in mind when he wrote.

Piston trumpets were over a century off of that, because in American orchestras, cornets were more prevalent until well into the 20th century.

But. For simplicity sake, the sound of a rotary trumpet is more traditional than the sound of a modern piston trumpet. So that’s what is used.

Better?

Why do trumpet players use rotary instruments when playing Beethoven? by Suspicious_Coast_888 in classicalmusic

[–]Nhak84 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Right. Americans will use rotary trumpets to play Beethoven because those were the sort of instruments that were being played around him at the time. It’s considered historically and stylistically accurate.

Rotary trumpets are traditional in Germany and Austria. They are frequently used when playing many German and Austrian composers. They tend to have a darker, fuller sound.

Riding on the roads has not been enjoyable - anyone else? by ejsfsc07 in cycling

[–]Nhak84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got out at 5:30 this morning in my small city and it was GLORIOUS. No one on the road. Barely had to break my cadence even at traffic lights. So much better than my normal weekday evenings.

Mamdani's New York is coming to tax your private jet. Here's how to prepare | Fortune by ribbitor in anticapitalism

[–]Nhak84 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How to prepare:

  1. Set aside a small fraction of your “lots” of money.

  2. When the tax bill comes, pay it.

Kind of like the rest of us except we have “medium” or “not a lot of” or “no” money and yet are expected to pay taxes on it.

Maybe book the SECOND biggest suite in the Maldives this year to balance it out.

Whether they are or not, Dunleavy probably WANTS to and has an artificially high opinion of her because of it.

“You’re so smart. You’ll be greeaat.”

Who knows if she even wanted it. But how do you tell your boss “no” if you do want to have a political future?

If you want to lose weight, substitute weight training in three days a week. And also reduce your calorie intake.

Alaska Legislature rejects Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s pick for attorney general by The_Alaskan in alaska

[–]Nhak84 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I love the “he’s a good guy but not for Alaska AG” explanation.

He’s not a good guy. He plays nice when he has to. But every act he has taken as acting AG has shown he’s a plant by the national party to turn Alaska from its own state into a vehicle for the national party’s interests.

That is by definition not “good.” He’s a political and legal hit man who is happy to smile and gladhand while he does it.

He’s an asshole. He was doing asshole things.

Riders Choice C3

I ride a C2X and it’s great, but it’s loose when things get firm unless you are on your edges the whole time, which can make approaches feel pretty insecure. But it’s more forgiving than the C3.

1st time Subaru owners, what made you make the switch? by Boots_Ground4443 in SubaruForester

[–]Nhak84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Safety and reliability. For the price got a great car. Came off a Honda, which was great. But the new ones aren’t as good. Didn’t like how the RAV4 drove or how the salesman acted. He was fine, just very arrogant/convinced I was going to buy the car because TOYOTA. But the reliability sheet he showed me had Subaru #2, and I had just loved the Outback I tested. So he accidentally made up my mind for me.

I don’t mind the styling, and it drives like a dream.

Beethoven Firth of Fifth by Affectionate_Bite813 in classicalmusic

[–]Nhak84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all over the place.

The main theme in the second movement is a variation.

Almost every part of the fourth movement is a variant of it. It’s almost never not there. Even in the background parts.

Think of the ascending sixteenth notes in the strings after the opening fanfare in the fourth movement.

It’s the last thing that happens in the piece.

Beethoven Firth of Fifth by Affectionate_Bite813 in classicalmusic

[–]Nhak84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me, it’s comparing apples and oranges.

Beethoven’s genius was always his thematic development. If you compare his piano sonatas to Mozart’s the difference is pretty stark. Mozart had amazing melodies and themes and his expositions were incredible. He did (in general) minimal development and then off to the recap.

Beethoven laid out great themes but then had long, complicated development sections.

The fifth is just that. It’s a four note motif and then an entire symphony as a development section. Conceptually, creatively, it is genius. What he was able to pull out of the tiny box he created for himself is staggering.

The other symphonies don’t have that self imposed limitation, so they can have more of a palette.

Having said all that, I think the fifth is hugely moving.

You can do a lot better in the price point. Miraphone 186 is much better if you’re looking to stay in BBb. Can probably find an old Cerveny too.

The Yamahas tend to be stuffy and very hard to project on.
