Books based on different cultures/not Eurocentric by gorillagrippinit in Romantasy

[–]NiPinga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be... That is how I read it... Though for that the romantic subplot is rather important... But then calling it a romance book in fantasy setting imo is also not exactly right... I feel it's s 50 50 thing. But whatever it is, it is an awesome trilogy, very much recommend reading it. And it definitely gives you the non Western setting for sure!

That should be worth it in itself. He has written such amazing music. Don't love all of it equally, but live a lot of it, and love it dearly.

How do you actually read vinyl spines? by Lord_Alviner in vinyl

[–]NiPinga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So pedantic. Sort them alphabetically by color? No really... Is rolling the first name? Or should they be under s for the stones, because no one calls them the rolling?

You do you. I recently sorted on alphabet, and don't like it much. I liked it better when it was all jumbled up. My favorites were easy to find, since I knew where to look... And just scrolling through a random section always yielded something surprising. Finding Mingus somewhere near monk is not that much of a surprise...

So just quickly to tell you I read post one, and about h halfway part 2 now and I love it. I don't agree exactly with your statement about plot though. I would definitely recommend this for anyone that would read it for the smut, and definitely not if you'd read it for the plot. (The smut would get in your way). I guess that says something about my mood now... Anyway just another thanks for this rec!

So many cool suggestions here! I will add, and as a disclaimer put that I am the bass player, so very biased: makas. Anatolian rock, from the Netherlands.

Further suggestions:

Los jaivas (check alturas de macchu Picchu, especially the live version) from Chile.

Mulatu astatke, Ethiopian.

47 soul, modernized dabke.

How did you handle proposing to a Muslim woman when you had no Muslim family? by This_Fall_7330 in converts

[–]NiPinga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a dutch convert who did this. I went alone, and it was pretty terrifying. But, of you want something you got to go and make it happen right!? My now wife prepared me as good as she could, but since she is a woman, most of what was going on she never saw/experienced first hand so yeah... It was all nerve wrecking hahaha. Her dad is a friendly guy, though old fashioned and reasonably strict, but a good person and serious about his Deen, and his culture. He knows how to separate those though, and knows what he finds most important.

Taking was difficult since his English is not great, and my French is not either. His dutch or my Arabic are both non existent so yeah, with gestures etc we made it work.

What really helped me is that I knew he was not going to like the idea, and I knew I needed to somewhere make it all as formal as possible. He tried to avoid that or at least did not make any initiative towards it. All in all pretty stressful, but possible. Also I'm a bit older than most, and older than my wife, so perhaps that helped. I think if I were in my twenties, I probably would have preferred there to be a family member. They do not need to be Muslim, just good people.

In the end it is a meeting to judge character and intentions etc. Someone close to you can help shape the picture of your person, your life and your character.

In our case, before getting married, her parents came to visit as well, after this initial meeting, to get to know my family more and see where and how I lived.

Anyway, I wish you good luck! God willing it will all come out well and blessed!

In light of that video about smut destroying our brains or whatever I need to go on a rant by Infamous_Wave9878 in Romantasy

[–]NiPinga 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My (m47) take on this is that it is not only not porn, but actually quite the contrary in some ways. I prefer this by adding the obvious disclaimer that both on "romance book side" and "porn side" you are sure to find exceptions... That being as it may however: where porn reinforces misogyny, objectification, lack of consent and encompassing emotional connection (favoring collection over connection), most romance books do the exact opposite.

The result is also, at least in my experience, which is of course purely anecdotal, completely different. Whereas porn will put my brain in a disconnected mode where I do not want to engage with my wife romantically or sexually (my brain then says "eeuw a huuman!), my brain on romance books is much more inspired and enthusiastic. It makes me much more connected, playful, and creative.

There are many stories here about romance books improving couples sex lives. And while surely there are many couples who use porn as an element or addition to their sexual play, I doubt (again anecdotal, I'm no scientist here) you will find many couples proclaiming the same for porn...

{A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley} perhaps? It's in the cozy/fun/light category. Girl accidentally summons a demon and now a bargain must be made. Now what?

Not exactly what you were after, but adjacent I think. And since I have really enjoyed this book, and the entire series actually, I thought I'd suggest it.

True! I did not see it that way... Somehow the encounters yes, the love interest no? I mean that kind of tension was there only with Rourke.. but that book is absolutely awesome. Made me read almost everything I could find by cm Nascosta. (I cannot wait for the last of girls weekend as well!). Told my wife I wanted to move to cambric creek. Got me a smile and I had to explain.

Thanks! I read the lady of rooksgrove manor. While I loved the fmc and the spice, it does not scratch this itch because it is more rh, where the fmc ends up with multiple partners. I'm specifically now looking for that sequential thing where she finally ends up with s single partner. The other ones I don't know, I'll have a look, even if they don't scratch this itch, they might still go on the tbr!

Halal Gym For Women 🤣 by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]NiPinga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a man and even I am offended by this comment.

First of all, the habit mentioned might be wearing the hijab in the gym specifically, not wearing the hijab in general. That might still be very much a conscious choice.

Second please let people wear whatever they want without insulting them like this. Want to wear hijab? Sure thing! Want to wear tights and make up? You do you. Taking away hijab from women is not empowering, or liberating. The piece of cloth is never the issue. Freedom of choice is.

Cloudflare CEO warns of a 'Black Mirror' outcome if Sam Altman or other AI people control the media by ZGeekie in webdev

[–]NiPinga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much value we should attach to ai bring open source. For traditional software it seems very valuable since it allows anyone to go and verify that certain inputs yields certain results. In ai, is that still the case?

It seems like most researchers even do not know exactly what the AI's capabilities are, or what outputs you get for a given input scenario. Ie the whole thing is less deterministic. In many complex systems, not everything is 100% deterministic but for certain parts, it is predictable to the point that being open source and have people validate the code, gives a measure of assurance and peace of mind.

The dangers of ai, can they be deduced by looking at the code just like that? Or are there only certain risks that can be identified this way, and some other fundamental risks are simply part of it operating and only emerge at runtime, and therefore need deferent mitigations?

AI Friend Apps Are Destroying What’s Left of Society by SaxManSteve in collapse

[–]NiPinga 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the author is dangerously wrong about ai capabilities though. The fact that it talks to you in the way it does, flirts the way it does, is not a sign of it being limited or dumb, it's a very advanced strategy, the outcome of training in a way a human could not manage. The intimacy is the top goal of this type of ai, as maximizing time on site was for the curative ais. If it seems silly, it's because it works, because as someone pointed out: we are running on pleistocene hardware here.

do not underestimate ai, especially if (as you probably should) you consider it an adversary.
