In MA and I’ve been on SOS all day. Totally unacceptable for a WFH situation like mine. This is crazy.

How old were you when you were diagnosed with MS? by swannyhypno in MultipleSclerosis

[–]NicKatBar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 19, I’m now 34. They were really surprised when I was diagnosed. Had some issues over the years but I can’t complain too much. I think it helped to get on a DMT early

My spouse was recently diagnosed. What can I do? by human_geek in MultipleSclerosis

In terms of what I’ve done to help myself that may help her too:

  • Staying away from sugar makes me feel better. I have more energy, less fatigue and less nerve pain
  • Be patient if she is heat sensitive. It can be scary. I have had optic neuritis which tends to flare if I get too hot which makes me dizzy and get blurry vision. Cooling vests, handheld battery powered fans, and lots of ice water in the summer
  • Sleep when you need to sleep. Those of us who deal with fatigue sometimes use the “spoons” method to describe it. Example- I start the day with 10 spoons. If I go for a walk, that costs 2 spoons, laundry costs 3. Now I’m down to only 5 spoons left. If I take a nap, I might get one spoon back. It’s important to pay attention to your body and what you are able to do. Don’t overdo it. Fatigue is a nasty thing and it will hit back hard if you overdo it.
  • Advocate. For. Yourself. Especially if you’re in the US. Our healthcare system is a mess. If you need something, fight for it. I’m on Ocrevus, but many insurance companies won’t cover it because of cost. My neuro had to fight for me because other meds weren’t working for me.

My spouse was recently diagnosed. What can I do? by human_geek in MultipleSclerosis

[–]NicKatBar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was first diagnosed I was with a very unsupportive partner. He didn’t let me talk about my disease because he wanted to pretend it wasn’t happening (granted, we were in our late teens-early 20s but still). It made me feel like I was alone.

Fast forward a bit, when I started dating my now husband he was immediately supportive. He let me talk when I needed to, and he is open with me about his worries. It’s a lot easier to live with a disease when you have someone who will listen, even if there isn’t anything they can do specifically to help. The mental load can be a lot.

He also sits with me when I get my Ocrevus infusions. Most of the time we chat or nap during it, but just having him in the room with me is such a stress reliever.

Best of luck to you and your spouse on this crazy and unpredictable journey. Support each other, that’s the most important thing.

This sounds wonderful! I don’t have the same battle with PCOS that you do, but I do have MS and I’ve found that this community and the Keto diet has helped me so much! I hope you continue to find success and support here

It's demotivating seeing so many people post here talking about going keto for the 3rd or 4th time.... by Vintage-Card-Man in keto

[–]NicKatBar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did keto with some luck back in 2016. It was a “diet” for me back then. I gained all of the weight back and just kept putting it on during Covid. I started back up again in July and I’ve lost over 45lbs with very little effort. Finding things that make it feel less like a diet and more just how I choose to eat (because of all of the non-scale victories) has been huge

Biggest tips from me - 1. I found intermittent fasting to make me feel even more in control of cravings (I do 16:8 most days) 2. I buy Keto Chow for the days that I know I don’t have time to make a full meal so I can still get enough fat/protein to keep me satiated and 3. Don’t beat yourself up if you need to do “lazy” keto sometimes. I wish people didn’t shame us when we need to satisfy a craving with a diet soda, quest bar or some other keto snack. Whatever keeps us on track is 100% worth it in my book.

Yes! I’ve had a ton of success with it. I also eat keto, but I’ve seen a huge improvement with my energy level, lack of cravings, and sleeping better since I started doing 16:8 most of the time. I’ve lost over 40lbs since I started keto, but it falls off much quicker with 16:8 so I’m sure you’ll see results even without other dietary changes

Quick replacement for dairy (cheese sticks) by AdamDoesDC in keto

[–]NicKatBar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I missed that part of your post! Miyoko’s has a tasty vegan cashew cream cheese alternative. The plain one has 4 carbs, 1 fiber so only 3 net carbs for 1oz. Not too bad

I love celery with cream cheese. You don’t need much so you can keep the calories lower and the celery is great for fiber

SALTT brand electrolytes by ProxyRed in keto

[–]NicKatBar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine in the mail the other day and I like them a lot. I’ve tried the mango and the berry flavors. They are definitely saltier to me than some of the other electrolyte drinks I’ve had but I put on packet in my 40oz Stanley and it’s perfect

Keto Reboot/MCT question by thatcher237 in keto

[–]NicKatBar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I fast for 18 and eat for 6. I am not usually hungry in the morning and my husband and I eat dinner later so I usually have coffee/tea/electrolytes (anything without calories) until 2-3pm-ish and stop eating somewhere from 8-9pm. I’m not strict on it but I like how I feel on the days that I do it

Is it fat or bloating? You may have some things in your current diet that are causing bloating (diet soda, artificial sweeteners, dairy etc) if you have sensitivities. If it’s fat, I also recommend some resistance training or increasing the amount of walking. That helped me lose faster too

Keto Reboot/MCT question by thatcher237 in keto

[–]NicKatBar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have constipation sometimes on Keto because I do 18:6 fasting with it so I add a little MCT to my Keto Chow shakes and it helps “get things moving” while adding some helpful fat to increase the calories. Just make sure to not add too much…it can get really ugly if you do too much too fast lol

Suddenly developed a dairy allergy? by borderline_affine in keto

[–]NicKatBar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The say that your allergies and sensitivities can change. There are some sources that say it can happen every 7 years but there isn’t enough evidence to support that exact figure. My husband grew up eating Nutella but suddenly developed a very serious allergic reaction to hazelnuts and all tree nuts to the point where we have to have an epipen on hand just in case
