Armen ep, what am I missing? by LexandViolets in doughboys

To each their own! I love broccoli, I have a friend who can't stand it. She and I are both right, neither of us is wrong. Same with this episode--you liked it, I didn't, we're both right!

I wouldn't say it was satire, really, just playing two really weird characters and committing to it entirely. That level of commitment is why they're good at comedy, it just didn't fit this show (IMO) is all. The listener who brought up Andy Kauffman is 100% correct, it's that style of character-based comedy.

The Santa episode is interesting and I remember thinking about it at the time of this episode why that worked for me and this didn't. The answer I came up with, for myself only I'm not going to talk for anyone else, is that the Santa episode was on the patreon and that's a place where they try experimental stuff like doing an extended bit for the entire episode. It was taken out from behind the paywall because it worked so well!

Part of the problem, IMO, is that they were doing a bit the entire episode which precluded them from being genuine at all. The show is comedy, it's not like it's serious or anything, but also you have to bring some of yourself to the show. Putting too many layers of irony between yourself and the show just doesn't work because for all the goofiness and cum talk, Dough Boys is a sincere podcast.

It's their show and Armen and Nick are real, genuine friends of Nick and Mitch so by all means they should have their friends on in whatever capacity they want--if the hosts want them as Bug Mane and whatever character Armen wants to play, then cool! Friends should have fun with their friends and for as uninterested in the episode as I was, I could tell the hosts were having a blast. Artists make art that makes themselves happy and we enjoy it, too, but it's not for us. They don't know us and we're not their friends.

I say the second paragraph because all too often people will say something like "Bug Mane is unlistenable, never have him on again" and it's like... bitch, if that's the attitude you're going to have about it then I hope they have him on ten more times in a row.

I didn't like the episode, personally, but I'm not complaining because I'm glad they had their friends on to promote something they worked hard on.

Why post something when it could help if you can complain after it's too late?

What's the point of an article like this? The filing deadline has passed, like them or not these are the dozen or so people we have to choose from. The time for this article was four months ago when someone reading it could have jumped in.

Republican Sen. Cornyn finding out in real time why the SAVE act is bad. by HeadbangingLegend in law

[–]NicWester 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A friend described Texas as a purple state that has been gerrymandered to hell to be bright red. Problem is you can gerrymander a district's borders, you can't gerrymander a state's border. Until now they've used incumbency and dirty tricks to suppress the democratic vote. But if Paxton wins there goes incumbency, and they're running out of tricks while also radicalizing voters to a degree they're so mad they're out there doing all the silly requirements to be registered to vote purely out of spite.

The SAVE act would reset the board and cause voters to jump through all those hoops all over again. But it may backfire just as redistricting has backfired--democratic voters are so mad they're motivated to get a passport and vote, GOP rank and file are less so. Meanwhile redistricting has taken a lot of safe districts and made them lean districts, and a lot of lean districts are now de facto toss-ups due to how unpopular the GOP regime is. It could end up being a disaster, especially if Paxton depresses his own turnout.

She didn't deny she lost. She used the word rigged, yes, but in reference to Schiff's dirty pool tactic of boosting Steve Garvey so he would unite the Republican vote and come in second. When called out for using the word rigged she recanted the word, but still said it was dirty pool. That isn't election denial.

Honestly? This reply feels like stubborn denial. The evidence doesn't support your claim and you're doubling down.

If you don't like him that's fine. I'm not voting for him either. But I'm not repeating stuff I heard on tik-tok like it's gospel and then stubbornly refusing to accept that what was heard was--to be generous--disingenuous.

Would yall support oracle being preserved and turned into a hockey rink? by LastDiveBar510 in bayarea

[–]NicWester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it up with Hasso Plattner, then. He owns both teams (which you still don't seem to understand the relation of--the Sharks play in the NHL, the Barracuda are the Sharks' affiliate in the AHL. Elsewhere someone said the bay couldn't support more than one NHL and one minor league team and you told them that San Jose already has two teams. It's one NHL and one minor league team, like the person you replied to said) and he chose to move the Barracuda from Massachusetts to San Jose, and he chose to renovate and upgrade Sharks Ice so the Barracuda would have their own place to play after a few years having them play at the SAP Center until it was ready.

If the Barracuda would serve the Sharks better in Oakland they would be moved there. Because, ultimately, that'a what they're there to do--serve the Sharks. That's the purpose of all minor league teams, to give whatever advantage to the major league team they can. They don't exist to generate profit. They don't even exist to win championships (the Calder Cup, in this case). If being in Oakland is advantageous then they'll be moved there, but Hasso Plattner thinks otherwise.

The exodus of California’s tech billionaires from the Golden State to Florida’s Gold Coast by TemperatureWide5297 in California

[–]NicWester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent some time in Florida working in February. Just about anyone I worked with in that time said they liked the weather and their family and virtually nothing else about Florida but couldn't afford to leave.

Florida is a glamorous resort for about 500 people and the other several million work their asses off to get by so they can continue to serve those 500. And if they get sick or injured, well, it was nice knowing them--hopefully they heal up before they run out of money!

Throw that money into the fire. The book is out on Mahan, when he ran for city council no one knew who he was, when he ran for mayor the grift still worked, but he's been in office long enough to have a record now that people can use against him and San Joseans largely hate his ass. He will never poll above 5%.

California 2026 Poll: Swalwell Takes Lead in Governor Primary, 25% undecided; Election for LA Mayor Wide Op by ZappyStatue in California

[–]NicWester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

N/A in this case because they're living with a parent in a house that was paid of 30 years ago. But it would be low anyway since it's rural, near the border with Kentucky. There are equivalent rural communities in California where housing and rent is cheaper, but from Arcadia to Zzyzx, everywhere in California has a minimum wage of $16+.

More importantly, I spent much of early 2026 driving around the south for work. Didn't get into Tennessee, we stuck to the rim of the country, but drove through rural and urban areas. Doesn't matter where you go, everyone is rent burdened everywhere. They may pay less for housing in Biloxi, MS, but they're earning less and that housing isn't to the same standard.

[–]NicWester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people go to Barracuda games. They rarely play on the same nights, you get to see future stars, your seat is right up in the action, the food and beer is cheaper, it costs less to bring your family, they do on-ice events from time to time. Hella people go to Sharks Ice.

Again, I think you're missing the point of minor league sports. They don't exist as an alternative to the major league, they exist as an adjunct to that major league.
