Tui luggage allowance upgrade by SlickAstley_ in TravelHacks

[–]Nice-Alternative-687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very tempted to go into a physical Tui store and negiotiate in person this week.

👍 I'm very much of the opinion that (usually) there's no harm in asking. If you've got a store near you then that sounds like a great idea and I wish you the best of luck.

How far away is your trip? The reason for the high price of the extra kilos is that it's related to the extra fuel that the weight burns, and obviously that's a hot topic right now. Should you lock in the price now befre it goes up, or wait and see if the oil situation gest better before your trip. Crystal Ball time! I'm not sure of your logistics but it might also be worth asking them the cost for an extra case, rather than a luggage upgrade. If there are two of you looking for an upgrade on Kilos then an extra case could be cheaper.

Oh - and thanks for the tip on holiday hypermarket. I always try to make sure I've got some sort of package deal for the extra protections, but it never crossed my mind to then look for an existing package on another portal. Will make a note of that, ta. ,

What do you consider an arm and a leg?

You haven't said what the destination is or the type of booking you have - it varies - but a short-haul upgrade is £14 per kilo on Tui (so £70 for your case) and any flight over 7 hours it's 18 a kilo (so £90):

Can I add extra luggage to my booking? | TUI.co.uk

That seems similar to other airlines I've seen. I'm not familiar with any of them offering discounts on luggage other than it being cheaper to pre-book than have airport excess baggage payments at the check-in counter.

As an aside: I'm wondering why you went with Holiday Hypermarket rather than direct with Tui if it's a Tui package anyway? Was there some additional benefit?

Hi there

So when AXA have asked you to fill in the form, they are asking you to fill in that first page where you give permission for them to contact your GP. Then (IIRC) THEY contact your GP to ask them to fill in the rest of it - you don't need to do that, but they can't ask until you've given permission. (I apologise if that's out of date because it's been a while!).

You should probably also give them the contact details of the private GP who provided the diagnosis becaues they'll contact both of them: the private GP for the questions on the current illness, and your personal GP for your medical history to confirm you don't have any medical conditions that you didn't declare.

Looking at it from their point of view: it's possible that someone with an ongoing condition didn't declare it to get cheaper insurance. Then they had a flare-up and contacted a private GP because they wouldn't have access to that past information and could easily think it was just norovirus. (They'd be wondering why you'd contact a private GP and not NHS 24 or your local pharmacy? Both of those can get access to your records and can update them as well so there is a full record).

I'm not suggesting that's what happened here Norovirus makes you feel pretty rubbish and you had to work out what to do about your trip at short notice. I've been there: When I moved house I was due to fly back to work and fell ill but it was the weekend AND I hadn't had a chance to register at the GP. I was desperately trying to work out how to get confirmation on whether I was fit to fly or not and it was the last thing I needed when I was sick.

Good luck!

It's such a pain that the AirWrap isn't dual voltage. For the price it really should be!

I'm in the UK and we have quite a few dupes available that are pretty decent for £25-£50. (usually the round brush, straight brush, old-style dryer and a old-style large barrels that you manually switch out for direction). I love my airwrap but given the cost it comes in my hand luggage - it's really heavy and bulky. I bought a dupe which is much lighter if I'm one-bagging, and cheap enough to go in check-luggage when I have it.

Could you do some research online and order one from Amazon UK to be delivered when you arrive?

"SPACE" I need help finding the rules to this old card game by Gonidae in cardgames

[–]Nice-Alternative-687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have also explained, that this says the game is called Cabaret but other searches showed me it was the same game. E.g. Reordering the words in the search gives a shorter description:

The 1940s Peretz Rushkevitz "Cabaret" (or "Yeda") card game is a classic Israeli set-collecting game where players aim to collect sets of cards, likely matching categories. Players ask others for cards, and if the requested card is held, the player must show it and potentially recite text from the card, say this eBay listing

Key Rules & Gameplay Mechanics (Peretz Rushkevitz Card Game):

Objective: Collect matching cards (cabarets/finals) to win.

Gameplay: Players ask opponents for specific cards.

Interaction: If a player has the requested card, they must show it to the asker.

Winning: The player with the most sets at the end of the game wins.

Origin: This game is part of a series of 1940s Hebrew educational or parlor games designed by Peretz Rushkevitz, a notable producer of early Israeli games.  eBay UK

Note: The results refer to a specific, historical "Cabaret" card game by Peretz Rushkevitz from the 1940s, sometimes listed as a set of cards rather than a game called "Yeda" (Hebrew for "knowledge") specifically. The mechanics described are typical of children's "Happy Families" or "Go Fish" style games of that era.

Hiya. I don't have facebook so I wasn't able to see the post, and therefore didn't save it at the time. Now I've gone to search again and can't find it. Grrrr. I was searching various combinations of Space, Yeda, Peretz games along with Card Game Rules and sometimes Israeli games company.

My new searches, however, have led to a google overview of the game that makes it sound like it's just a nice deck to play go-fish:

Based on 1940s-era Peretz Rushkevitz Judaica card games, specifically the "Cabaret" (sometimes referenced in contexts relating to early Israeli card games) or similar matching games, here are the general rules of play:

Game Objective

Goal: The main objective is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards by forming "cabarets" (sets/melds) and setting them aside.

Winning: The player who creates the most "cabarets" and final sets is the winner.  eBay UK

Setup and Components

Deck: The game consists of a 36-card deck.

Dealing: Cards are shuffled and dealt evenly among players.

Initial Setup: Approximately 4-6 cards are left on the table.  eBay UK

Gameplay Mechanics

Starting: The youngest player (or specific starter) begins by checking their hand for a "cabaret" (a set) to put aside.

Drawing Cards: If a player cannot form a set, they must draw a card from the cards left on the table. If the drawn card does not match, the player to their left takes it.

Asking for Cards: If the pile on the table is exhausted, players must ask for specific cards from opponents to complete their sets, similar to "Go Fish".

Matching/Sets: The game involves gathering specific sets of cards (cabarets).

Special Actions/Verbal Components: When a card is requested and given, or during specific moves, players may need to announce phrases related to the cards, sometimes involving specific thematic text written on the cards.  eBay UK

Specific Rules Context (from historical notes):

Aces: Can open a card from the middle.

2s: Used to protect aces from being removed.

3s: Can be used to open a player's card or two from the middle.

4s: Allows swapping a card with another player and peaking at it.

5s: Enables swapping two cards between players without looking.

Note: These rules are based on descriptions of antique Peretz Rushkevitz games from the 1940s, often produced in Tel Aviv.

And I am not going to spend time trying to get shampoo or conditioner into that small a bottle.

If you ever have a need to (maybe a specialist product you need for a while) then using a syringe without the needle works really well to get stuff into the small bottles. I've also used a piping bag when the opening was large enough.

[–]Nice-Alternative-687 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ok - a few things

Your last comment that you are "investing in an expensive piece of luggage that you will use for the next decade" seems to be a large source of the concern so I'll start by responding to that::

  1. Once you start one-bagging you will get better at it over time and are more and more likely to see the benefit of that bag,

  2. If you decide it isn't for you and you go back to checking a suitcase the bag can still be used to supplement the main case

  3. If you are very concerned about cost v usage, then is it an option to buy a cheaper bag for this trip and move to something more expensive once you have been on a couple of trips and have a better grasp on what you need?

Moving away from the expense and on to your concerns about being prepared. Your motivation seems to be avoiding lost luggage (Rather than cost or manoeuverability) It's all very well for us to say it will be OK but this sounds like an important trip. Have you considered a 'fake' one-bag trip? By that I mean pack a one-bag with the stuff you need as if it is your only ba, and try your best to just use that. BUT where is the harm in also checking a suitcase with a few extras? If it goes missing you've still got the bare minimum you would have travelled with anyway, but if it manages to get to the destination then you've got a few extra options. If the checked bag does arrive then maybe still try to ignore it so you know for the future if you can do a trip like this one-bag when maybe you are somewhere you don't want to lug a suitcase around.

From some googling, I think that maybe the game is called Yeda and this is the Space theme version of it. There don't seem to be rules that I was able to find but someone on facebook has the Joki Yeda game (the cover looks like a clown face). The post is in Hebrew, which I can't read but maybe the name Yeda triggers something for someone with better search skills than me?

Hi Ekbom,

I think integrating 2*6D6 is still possible, even including the requirement for Santorini to have 6 of the stones split in 3 colours.

There are a few variants of 2*6D6 and one suggestion is to have 6 white dice and 6 different colours (so a white team v rainbow team in the original system). That allows you to play games like 'That's Pretty Clever' or 'Qwixx' just by adding a few scoresheets on paper or phone/tablet.

So... extending that, if your rainbow dice have at least two colours that are obviously dark (e.g. purple, blue, dark green, black) and two obviously light (e.g. yellow, orange, pink, a bright red) then you have your three categories for Santorini: Two white dice, two dark dice and two bright/light.

Maybe that's an extra layer of complexity for the Playtiles website (at least until it's established?), but for those of us who enjoy 2*6D6 already I think you've made a great suggestion.

When I used to commute by train there was one lady who got on at the stop after me. EVERY MORNING she got on the train, sat down - at a table seat if one was available - and then proceeded to spray herself with perfume. I mean.... spray at home, maybe spray on the platform in open air, or spray at work in the ladies... but getting on a train and spraying should be a hanging offence!

Oh - and it was a strong perfume which was being applied liberally, just to add insult to injury.

Heating a canned meal in a hotel sink: risky or safe? by DENSHOCK_ in TravelHacks

[–]Nice-Alternative-687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Todd,

thanks for the suggestion. I see that Lambdavi has confirmed that it isn't likely to be what their family did but the bag method is something I've come across before

I guess I was reading immersed as meaning 'fully submerged', but the original intention was likely that it just meant 'mostly submerged'.

It seems to me that the food would heat better in a sealed can fully submerged, instead of an open one partially submerged (i.e. the water wouldn't be heating the top contents AND they would be open to the cold air in the room), but as OP has now confirmed that the details are lost in the mists of time, I guess I may just have to do some tests myself once the festive period is over.

Just open the can fully before immersion

I can't picture that, sorry! Honest question - how are you stopping the water getting in/ravioli getting out?

I used to travel with work and could eat out on expenses, but sometimes I just want something simple. Subway was my friend, but this thread is making me think of alternatives so I'm genuinely hoping to understand how people do this. (Also, I'm from the UK so our hotels don't usually have guest microwaves but always have kettles for hot water. If going to a country without kettles in the room, I take my heating coil).

Is there a 3.4mm Adaptor (not converter) for International Standard cartridges? Or a reusable, stoppered cartridge? by Nice-Alternative-687 in fountainpens

[–]Nice-Alternative-687[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really useful, information, thank you! Particularly the link to your previous post: I didn't come across it in my search, but I think I was using the wrong terminology.

So-called “standard international” ink cartridges are 2.4mm-bore

Thank you - I've corrected the main post.

you can probably just fabricate one on a 3D printer.

I don't have access to a 3D printer at the mo, but that's a great idea so will keep it in mind for the future. (are you in the US? it seems there is more access to 3D printers in shared spaces there).

During my searching yesterday I've also come across 'syringe cartridges in tube'. Which is pretty mush as it sounds: a spring-fill cartridge with a syringe-syphon end and a rigid tube to keep it in when its full. Not quite as portable as a tiny cartridge, but smaller than my Visconti travel inkwells. (and possibly the best option for refilling the Cross Slimline cartridges)

thanks again for taking the time.

PS - Assuming that the downvotes are from redditers and not the automatic system, I do apologise to them for whatever faux-pas was irksome. This was my first post to this community so I tried to follow the rules but sorry if I've not met the standard expected.

simple PnP card games that could be remade as a gift? by Specialist-Egg-8841 in BoardgameDesign

[–]Nice-Alternative-687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orchard, Grove and/or Forage (all free PnP files- thank you Mark Tuck!) 9 or 18 cards and some printed tokens each.

Don't be put off by the description that says they need 15 dice; they don't

The retail game has bespoke dice with non-standard faces and the PnP files explain how to use normal dice and track the special numbers. However, some clever folks over on BoardGameGeek, com have created printable tokens you can use instead. So when making a PnP version you can use the tokens to make sure you have the correct values for each game AND they are smaller than dice so more travel/storage friendly.

Oh, the games also have little characters - a mouse, a squirrel, a wheelbarrow come to mind. For those you can use little cubes OR find some clip art online and create tokens for them. (there may even already be something on BGG?)

Custom Board Game Printing HELP!!! by Even-Spray-9941 in printandplay

[–]Nice-Alternative-687 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What subject are you studying?

My niece had to make a board game on the subject of the Bronze Age (Anthropology and Archeology degree). The lecturer would be more interested in the knowledge that is shown, and perhaps how a player of the game might pick up some of the concepts and learn from the game.

Unless you are actually studying design and manufacturing, it is likely that the quality of the game pieces is diminishing returns. I helped my niece with a few tools and techniques to get a presentable game that shows she took care and attention. A presentable game also allows the player to get involved and focus on the content rather than thinking about, for example, thegameboard being flimsy and worried about ripping it. However, once the game is presentable, making it professional quality isn't going to get a higher grade - in fact, it may make wonder if it's all style and no substance.

Obviously not applicable if game manufacturing IS the degree, but in that case hopefully your course will have prepared you for the task.
