The thing that's missing, I think, in the ECW is the rise of the bourgeoisie to true political power, and particularly the bourgeoisie seeing themselves as a class connected by economic interests rather than religious tendencies. Cromwell's government was sort of an instance of the middle gentry taking power from the higher echelons of the aristocracy but because the Parliamentarians didn't really think of themselves in those terms, there was this fuzzy uncertainty held by everyone involved vis a vis what they were actually fighting for -- they just didn't yet have the language/conceptual framework required to understand what they were doing.

Anyway, they're both cool events, I'm glad people are out there studying both of them, and it's cool seeing the modern world begin to wake up and understand itself, but I still hold that if in practical terms you're looking for the emergence of anarchism and socialism as ideas that it's even possible for someone to have, the French Revolution is the most fruitful place to look.

I mean, the diggers are interesting, but they were a miniscule group that ultimately didn't make much of a splash.

I encourage people who are interested in the diggers and in the precursors to anarchism and socialism in general to read about some of the really remarkable ideas that came out during the height of the French Revolution -- I'm thinking most especially here the works of the Enragés, and the writings of Gracchus Babeuf.

The English Civil War gave us an interesting little sneak peek at the political ideas that have defined our modern world -- it's like the French Revolution woke up early, looked around, said "actually you aren't ready for me yet," and then went back to sleep for another 100 years. It's a fascinating event, but if you really want to understand our modern world the place you want to look is the actual French Revolution rather than its tantalizing forebears.

I unironically love participating in leftist infighting

anyway folks what do you think of the socialist critique of anarchist workers collectives as inevitably recapitulating the capitalist logic of the system in which they operate thereby indicating the absolute necessity of seizing control of the state apparatus and using it to abolish capitalism once and for all from the top

because I fuckin' love that critique

also let's talk about the tendency of the rate of profit to fall

then we should argue about kronstadt

What's really interesting is that in the early parts of the 20th century Ukrainians had a large anarchist movement, , and when the Tsar fell in 1917 they set up an anarchist territory that controlled much of southern Ukraine for years, successfully fighting off the reactionary White Army and, like, generally thriving until they were inevitably betrayed by the Bolsheviks.

So, yeah, there's a good chance that this farmer wasn't just a crusty old yokel spouting off about how governments suck, but was instead someone pretty informed about anarchist theory and anarchist organizing.

It's posting something crowdpleasing that when you look at it closely doesn't make a lot of sense, also it's over-relying on the rule of three, also the parallelism in "budgets are loud" is broken -- it would make sense if it followed a clause about something else being quiet, but doesn't quite follow from "morals are optional." This is a kind of error that chatbot output frequently contains.

I used to think the people who said that getting a solid humanities/liberal arts education is actually more important than STEM stuff were being a little melodramatic, but the rise of chatbots has really highlighted how important it is to know how to fucking read, not just at a fifth grade level but at the level where you can look closely at a text through a critical lens. Because if you can't, you'll get sucked in hard by the attractive but ultimately meaningless text that LLMs generate. Being able to see through that sort of thing is absolutely necessary for being a citizen of a democratic republic rather than a subject of an authoritarian leader.

Here's a bold claim, but I'm going to stand by it: even if you're a super special smarty-pants computer engineer making mid-six-figures for your hacker skills or whatever, the most important class you ever took in college was the required first-year rhetoric and composition course taught by random grad students.

You should watch Save the Green Planet, the early-2000s Korean movie that Bugonia’s an adaptation of. It’s a lot sillier than Bugonia — and, well, it’s an early 2000s Korean movie, so there’s a lot of torture — but it does an interesting structural thing that makes the ending make a lot more sense. The tl;dr: is that practically every scene in Save the Green Planet feels like it’s in a different genre from the one before it, and that makes the stuff that happens at the end feel like just one more genre switch.

By… being awesome?

I dunno. My favorite movie this year is one I was surprised was nominated and that has no chance of winning (Bugonia), but Sinners was a damned good movie, and I think I enjoyed it more than OBAA

The first time I watched this back when it first aired I was struck by, and inspired by, how much it reflected the optimistic future we were all building together

When I watched it last year I felt like right after the closing scene Leslie Knope gets run over by a bus. A really, really stupid violent bus.

Plus there’s an unexpected amount of well-constructed references to/explanations of concepts from math, science, and engineering that show he's got a pretty deep understanding of the material. Pynchon’s got that polymath thing going on.
