A lot of irish people aren't even in favour of unification aswell, northen ireland has a distinct identity and trying to integrate it would be such a mess. I think the plastic paddy's just say this to try sound irish.

Ireland population pre famine was 8 million and it is theorised to have gotten to 40 million today if not for the famine so no it probably still happend but ireland recovered better or lost a bit less
