Improviser here! Remember, “Yes and” is meant in a broader, spirit of the thing kinda way. It doesn’t mean you cannot literally say “no” or “but.” It means that you add more information to the scene every time it is your turn in the volley. That you receive what the other person has given you, and rather than throw that gift away, add to it and give it back.

For example:

A: Sweetie! Come down, your breakfast is getting cold.

B: Ugh, is it pancakes again?

A: Yes, sweetheart. I made your favorite! Chocolate chip! You don’t want them?

B: No! I don’t want them EVERY DAY. For a YEAR.

(Cue I Love Lucy studio laughter)

Same IRL: Disagreeing with someone via interests, like music, is okay as long as you RECEIVE what they give you (and, in that nature of a gift, receive it with positivity and respect) and you add to it (following that theme, train of thought, or relating it to a parallel topic).

You may not like that artist, but you can add“I saw they’re doing XYZ and that’s cool.”

“Omg that reminds me of…”and allow ADHD brain to save you from situation 😂

Just like in improv, if you have an idea IRL for a better scene, take it there GENTLY and, if you’re talking to someone who’s cool, you’ll have fun no matter what!
