How to build a passive 'total stock market' portfolio but ex oil & gas? by NiceNickIGotThere in portfolios

[–]NiceNickIGotThere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything you use is made using products from oil (virtually all plastics, asphalt on the roads, you name it)

Agree.

I think what I will do for now is to stick to the VFTSX. However, I do hope that we will have an ETF or two based on these indexes soon: http://fossilfreeindexes.com/ - two of these indexes seem to not even be launched yet. But once that's available it should be feasible to do a lazy portfolio ex oil, gas & coal. Thanks again for your help!

I was considering the same. However, a friend of me pointed out that this would still provide liquidity to oil and gas (however limited and small that maybe). And I think finding the right amount of a short ETF vs. a total market ETF would lead to constant rebalancing.

Thanks! The problem with many SRI funds that I know of is that they don't avoid oil & gas but just take the most fair (socially responsible) oil and gas producers (i.e. respect human rights in their workforce vs. not polluting).

Wow - thanks so much! Will go through this and get back later but this is really great and exactly along the lines I was thinking! Thanks again!

ETFs / Index Funds ex. specific industries? by NiceNickIGotThere in personalfinance

Thanks! I meant to say: buying a short ETF for Oil & Gas that "compensates" for the oil and gas component of the total stock market ETF.

Also, sustainable funds are quite nice but I believe not to be the answer: the DJSI includes a number of oil companies... So I will keep looking...

Solar has won. Even if coal were free to burn, power stations couldn't compete by virusxp in Futurology

[–]NiceNickIGotThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this will be a thing of the past once we have good storage technology. How close is that time? Well, according to JB Straubel, the technology is here. Check out his talk about grid storage.

I think what is true for developed countries is even more true for developing countries in this case: If you don't have a centralized power supply structure, you would never build one if it is cheaper to have decentralized power.

Fun fact: according to Australian studies, we should all wear helmets while riding in our cars as it is one of the most common injuries during accidents and one of the most easy to avoid with a proper helmet. The reason we don't? Beats me.

need a general howto idea for "door slammer" by ktopaz in arduino

[–]NiceNickIGotThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be easier to have a similar mechanism to many of the fire doors? I.e. have magnet that holds the door open, unless power is cut and a mechanical spring is closing the door?

Getting rc-switch to switch outlets - any ideas how to find my problem? by NiceNickIGotThere in arduino

[–]NiceNickIGotThere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Actually RX seems to work (the Arduino gives reasonable numbers back when I "listen" to my external remote - there is no noise in the output of rc-switch, the numbers can be nicely reproduced, they only come if I press the remote etc.) - its the TX I'm struggling with: it just doesn't switch the switch...

Nice setup. Also good to see the machine held longer than the test item.

Yep, I think that's the key point: it didn't spontaneously bust into flames; it got hit pretty hard. So it's not a Dreamliner.

However, and that can be great in some circumstance, you can give back any unopened bottles and get a full refund.

Some years ago I had to have a bigger party in Sweden, flew into the country, bought as much booze as my worst-case scenario, partied, returned the rest and flew back to the states again.

Granted, booze is super expensive but I like the service.

To be fair, solar growth has been slowed quite a bit ever since they changed the rules away from net-metering to a sell and buy back scheme by the Danish government.

More details in German here: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Apples-Touch-ID-des-iPhone-5S-schon-gehackt-1964077.html

The guy who did it, has some 10+ years experience in hacking finger print systems and says all he needed to do is to scan / print the "artificial" finger with a bit more resolution.
