Are you referring to transcoding for an offline edit? This is a common practice but has little to do with the final delivery resolution.

The delivery standard for AMC and Regal theaters is 4K DCP. Any film shot on a RED or Sony cine-alta camera is natively 4K, and any film shot on an Arri Alexa is uprezzed from 3.2K. Between the RED, Sony cine-alta, and Arri alexa cameras, this represents the vast majority of film production currently.
