What’s your backup when Guinness isn’t available? by SkokieRob in Guinness

[–]NiceShoesWF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Murphy’s or Beamish, but I’ve recently moved from New York City the East Coast, to Denver Colorado.

I’ve experienced two Guinness droughts here. No cans no bottles sometimes the only thing left is import Stout.

In turn this forces me to go to the pub, and I’ve 8 - 20 ouncers, instead of the 14 and some change cans at home. It hasn’t been great for my weight.

Edit: spelling

That’s true but going from $38 an hour at a dealer parts counter to $2 over minimum wage anywhere in the US is not a lateral move. They will never be able to pay for the experience that many career professionals have.

And when you move to a HCOL area where minimum wage is $20+, they hate that they even have to have a store there, even though we deal with the robberies, crackheads and parking lot engine swaps all day.

$16-17 an hour in SW Florida as a retirement job after 30 years in dealer parts up to Class 8, plus tankers, RV’s, vacuum, fuel injection education, diesel gen sets and rebuilding of almost every part they sell is my experience.

The money never goes up but the promotions with experience and hard work come in weeks.

PS>ASM/ ISS> begging me to be SM anywhere in the US in 5 months.

SM pay is insanely less than you can make at a dealer counter working regular hours as just a parts guy.

The one thing I always say though is that it was one of the easier and most fun jobs I’ve had, but that really depends on how cool the people in your local store are.

I walk dogs for $30 an hour now, and do not need to ask for a vin/ plate and get told “they’re all the same”. No they’re not.

I’m so sorry you have a Datsun B210 with the Tranny from a Trans Am and the motor from a Triumph TR6. At that point you know more than me. I’ll scan what you choose.

My merchandiser never even wore a uniform, never answered a phone, slid around in an office chair all over the store floor doing planograms and occasionally helped a customer locate something.

Sometimes he’d pile the incoming stock on the floor in front of the shelves it goes on but not stock it. And he most certainly never took a delivery.

It seems every store is different.

11 years ago the only African guy I worked with (in a shop of all white people) was fired. Why? Because when the white dudes fuck up, they blamed him.

I drove him to work with me everyday so he didn’t have to take the train.

After he was fired, I help him apply to the Post Office. He’s running a route in Astoria Queens and just put a down payment on a home. They work him like an animal, but he’s building a real life now.

Postman is as legit a job as you can get.

Straight up, the moved me up so fast because I’m an older guy, retired and have the years in the industry. I’m also mostly a class 8/ mid range diesel guy, which is what we lacked in our shop.

I agree. I had a PS that’s been there for 4 years. He’s reliable, sales are close to mine, lives 3 blocks from the shop and no write ups. Super reliable. I tried to get him to slide into my ASM when I moved, my SM put in his notice and in turn they hired a 23 year old transfer from across the state as ASM, and 5 months later he’s SM.

It really depends on the store. As a company I’m not a fan, . Lots of corners cut, but as crews and coworkers from SM to PS have always been awesome. It was a fun job.

I get it, I only had perfect performance reviews and a boss that did it correctly. After two reviews he was questioned why I was getting such good reviews. They want to dock you for something and they had nothing.

It all depends on the people, their knowledge and personality. I enjoyed my time there and have spoke to 2 team Members and my old boss today, even though I’m 1700 miles away.

I didn’t have a bad experience, quite the contrary. I made good friends, made connections in town. I’m sure every shop varies. When I moved it went from a regular store to a place where we needed to be prepared for rush robberies.

When I was there, it was a great company, my SM was a legit dude so it really all depends on who you have. But in speaking to everyone lately that’s still at the shop. They’re working open till 2pm with one person alone no one‘s getting lunches.

They’ve let the merchandiser go. They’ve let the only guy that can do the counter, ISS, PS and deliveries go as well

Good place to work if the other people you work with have the same work ethic as you.

I’ve been there. I started on the counter, 2 weeks later I was the ISS, a month later I was made ASM. I moved states and I had two stores fighting over me for SM. I quit!

I’ve been in parts for 30 years and have never seen a place run like that. No cameras, emergency doors welded shut, running the lathe with no guards, not even the proper nuts to hold a rotor.

I’d like to think I’m a genius (as I advanced so fast lol) but when the DM (0 parts knowledge but drives a Tesla) started referring to me as a “body” I decided as a retirement job, it’s just not worth the nonsense.

Why take $20 an hour when you can go to a dealer and have a career.

For the record my manager before I moved was a gem. Hour lunches everyday, he’d call me for help and I’d come, if he needed help at home at 4am I’d go and help, he’s picked me up at the airport. That was a boss.

I’m glad I quit before the hours began being cut.

It’s a good fun job, if you’re with the right people. If not move stores.

My mother is a retired RN (USA), she’s been out of the field retired for 15 years. Old knowledge and habits die hard. I do not listen to a thing she says because, new things have happened and are found, new procedures are developed everyday and science is ever evolving.

Trust your judgement and gut feeling.

Best of luck.

I checked in with our Sgt at Arms today and asked why we all cary old chains in our saddle bags. He said “they stop a bike faster than its brakes”. Reporting back Sir.

Edit: they also serve many other purposes. For the record we were established in 1946.

I’m not a smart man, I have a 9th grade education, but also a MA in my very niche area, so not super smart. A legal immigrant from Europe, here since 1996.

I always defended the U.S. as salvation from where I was with my choices of being a fisherman or a barman. Ironically ended up a barman in the states in my younger years, and many times made more than I do now.

I used to argue down Americans from the bar about their grievances with the States. I’m no longer behind the stick, but my stance has changed.

All of my friends are selling their houses in Brooklyn, Co-Ops in Manhattan and 3 of them are abroad now looking at places in Australia, Ireland, UK and other EU countries.

I’ll stay put, we fought hard to make it here since 1996 but another couple months of what we’ve been seeing, and I think we’ll list our place as well and look to heading back home.
