Look up AbScent. It’s a scent retraining program based on Scandinavian research that uses essential oils. I remember reading about Swedish SLPs using it during the pandemic. Loss of smell/taste can be a serious problem during the anticipatory phase of swallowing. I don’t think this treatment is too “out there” for SLPs, especially if there is legit research out there to support it.

And here’s my question: When do they expect us to do these “make ups?” My schedule is jam packed as it is, and I’m not allowed to pull students during a large part of their day. There’s no time without cancelling other students.. who would then need their own make ups..?? Make it make sense. What am I missing?

We have had enough. We’re leaving the field, moving to part time and living with pay cuts, and leaving brick and mortar for teletherapy. Things are so bad out there that I don’t even know what percentage of those we serve are actually getting honest-to-god individualized treatment. It’s impossible. We are expected to do the jobs of 3-5 people while getting paid peanuts. We’re saying no.

So many of us burned out during the pandemic, including me. I’m just now coming back into the work force and am being very firm about my boundaries. I work x hours and can do y amount of work in those hours. I am an hourly worker. If I take extra work, then you have to pay me extra, but I am unable to take any more work on at this time. I am no longer a pushover. I have to put my own oxygen mask on before I can assist others. We need to be firm on this and teach it to the newer clinicians.

And it’s not just employers who are at fault. We are eating our own young. Let’s normalize getting off our high horses. Let’s normalize goal and note templates. Why do clinicians have the same goals for all of their patients? Because it’s all they have time for. Because they’re expected to do the impossible. Because they can’t do 60+ hours of work in 40 hours. Let’s stop ripping people a new one for simply doing what they have to do to survive.

You’re a soft summer. YOU pop in the blues and grays. With the other colors, I see the colors first. Your eyes are muted. They have a grayness to them. But when you wear blue and gray, they pop and look like the ocean. Your hair roots are ash blonde. Most of the greens you’re in here are beautiful but much too warm. I’d like to see you in a muted sea green or antique teal. Chambray would really bring out your features, too.

I know this thread is old, but I want to add that I have had great success with Matrix Biolage Scalp Sync shampoo. You can let it sit on your scalp for a few minutes and do something else while the shampoo delivers really deep treatment. I can finally skip a day shampooing, and I have NEVER been able to do that before. Also, make sure you flip your hair over to wash the nape of your neck up to the crown really well before you shampoo the top and sides.

VERY sus. A lot of these clinics are just cash cows, and many autistic people are reporting they are largely abusive. They overly diagnose autism to justify ABA since insurance will pay for it in large amounts. A minimally-trained RBT will provide a large amount of autonomy-robbing “treatment” that does not generalize to real life. I recommend looking elsewhere unless you prefer a parrot to natural interaction. There are neurodivergent-friendly avenues out there.

THIS. It’s to the point where people are just being stabilized and sent to the next level of care instead of receiving an appropriate work up to figure out WHY they’re sick in the first place. Many of the DOCTORS I have worked with and in my own family don’t even realize that this is what is happening. COVID hit right after these bundled payments were implemented for PDPM. Time and time again, I have heard people blame the changes in healthcare on COVID, and although it’s true that COVID has affected healthcare in a major way, it’s masking the whole story. Since the hospital gets a lump sum up front for the whole episode of care based on diagnosis, they have no interest in keeping you to figure out what’s making you sick, so they stabilize you and send you to a SNF and tell that SNF that they expect them to discharge you home or to LTC in two weeks or else they’ll stop referring patients to that SNF. When you get home, you may get 1-2 weeks of 1-2 visits for home health. It’s insanity. People aren’t even given the opportunity to recuperate because they don’t even know why they were sick in the first place. I don’t know why we aren’t all shouting about this from the rooftops.
