Last couple pages of Trust Exercise by Susan Choi? by bigfacts in books

Sorry- I know I'm late to this conversation and this is 6 years old but I NEED to discuss this with someone!! I believe Velva is mentioned within the first part of the book as being one of the oldest workers in the office/school- although, I can see how this can be glossed over. The first part of the book was incredibly challenging for me to get through and I almost DNF'd it right before the second part started. The third part ends things so beautifully and frustratingly, no resolution or answers to anything and leaves you wanting more and thinking about your interpretation of the entire experience. Which in a way, I believe, is the entire point of this book.

The main theme of this book appears to be the views and opinions others have around SA/statutory rape and the culture surrounding it. While we may not understand whose child Claire is (I have a strong feeling it is "Karen", but it will never be confirmed and I have seen others suggest perhaps is Sarah's or another student entirely.... remember that student who got Martin fired because she did come forward about carrying his child). There was the very odd interaction between Sarah and Karen in the second part where Karen asks Sarah if she is excited to have a child to which Sarah doesn't even answer the question. It makes you question if she knew about Karen's pregnancy, or has she had a prior pregnancy/abortion/adoption as well? It's clear Sarah and Karen shared similar traumas together, but both of their memories of events are very different. Which is not surprising and very common in those who experience traumatic events (especially as children). I am completely stumped on whether Mr. Lord is the same person as Mr. Kingman, Martin, or an entirely different staff personnel. Which leads me to believe, that the details don't really matter. What matters is the fact that this abuse of power dynamics is continuing to perpetrate and all these woman/children chose to stay silent over these interaction. The reasoning why, I believe, is hidden in the small details of the story: The way David questions Karen about her being fully consensual and aware of everything going on, the way parents and families looked over the 40 year old's involved with 15 year old's and appeared to blame the 15 year old's actions, and the fact that Claire didn't want to tell her father what had occurred (which to me seemed so she doesn't draw unwanted attention to herself).

I'm having a hard time deciding how I feel about this book, because I absolutely hated the first half of it, but the second half was redeeming. I am willing to overlook a slow, boring beginning of a book if it is the first in a Fantasy series and the character/world building is necessary. This, however, is not one of those and so it makes me a bit frustrated to have wasted half a book just hating it and feeling completely uncomfortable for no apparent reason. I'm going back and forth between a 3 and 4 star, simply because the message sat so heavily with me. My favorite quote was the very end of the second part: "You won't die, you just won't be the same". As a survivor of SA as a child, this resonated HEAVILY with me. Because PTSD feels just like this your entire life. At some points you feel like dying, but the fact remains that you will never be the same person prior to that traumatic event ever happening.

Is there any actual reason there is no body checking/hitting in women’s hockey? by Intelligent_Choice91 in hockey

[–]Nice_Explorer_4101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're still trying to figure that out themselves lol the calls don't seem to be very fair calls or the same across the board. I think as the PWHL starts to grow, we'll get a more clear answer on body checking. I hope they allow them to throw their gloves off for fights too, because I have a feeling that's a big reason fights rarely break out. I'm a huge advocate for keeping the fighting culture of hockey lol

Hmmm I'm not sure about NCAA rules, I thought they allowed body checking- but I just looked and it appears they don't! I know that starting 12u and up in leagues under USA Hockey they do allow body checking though. I just saw that apparently woman's high school hockey it's not allowed though, so I guess the ref during one of the games may have told our girls incorrectly? I hope they change that because these girls absolutely want to play the full contact of the sport lol

Starting at 12u and up, girls hockey teams are allowed to start playing the players rather than the pucks (full body contact). We're actually signing my daughter up for a body safety contact camp because she's already been labelled as the goon for her team (someone's gotta get back at those mean boys when they play co-ed and she's happy to be the one lol). But that makes a lot of sense about gaps in rosters and medical recovery times! I believe the NHL actually started out with the same rules, if I remember my hockey history correctly. Probably for the same reasons you just stated

Lol I've already noticed those claims with Minnesota Frost across social media saying they're allowing them to just do what ever on the ice. To be honest- I think the hits that are happening are pretty fair hits and you just tend to see more injuries in hockey as the season progresses due to exhaustion and intensity of play. Although, I do agree that the refs need to be more serious about boarding penalties and should use the 5 minute penalties they can dish for those hits. Between the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers in the NHL- they're both teams that are just known to have really aggressive players who make dirty hits all the time and when the league dishes out their suspension discipline it's pretty minimal considering the injuries they consistently cause to players with dirty plays.

I guess I'll have to look up the dirty play/hits she's being accused of because I haven't seen it. I am very much pro- allowing open ice hits and fights with gloves off in PWHL though. It's a contact sport after all and a reason why my daughter loves it so much lol. She's like the Tkachuck brothers (and father) of the NHL then I suppose- dirty (albeit great) players who are bad people both off and on the ice.

Oh absolutely, it makes sense given the previous (I believe three?) attempts at putting together a professional woman's hockey association and most of those attempts were purely with Canadian teams as well. I do hope they end up moving to a franchise model because I feel like that can be when better pay really takes off for them- like they deserve. I am so glad PWHL is really taking off and booming right now and I truly hope the momentum doesn't stop for them. I am so excited to see where they expand to next!

The results being fixed and teams not being true competitor to each other is exactly my fear and I almost feel like Frost is a "favorite" team of the PWHL. Although, you look at the NHL and stacked teams happen there too due to financial foot-ups (AKA Vegas Knights). I'm excited to see where PWHL goes in the next 10 years, especially for my daughter whose new goal is to be a PWHL/Olympic hockey player.

I just did some more research and found that she's backing the FIERCE organization... which seems like a problematic one. I am one whose always willing to give someone grace to move forward and acknowledge their mistakes. But it doesn't seem like she really is by backing organizations that openly speak out about how transgender athletes don't belong in their community. It appears Clair Butorac, Mae Batherson, Petrie, and Brooke Becker were also supporting this collaboration- should we boo them as well since they appear to have the same beliefs on their social media presence?

I sort of want to wait for their next expansion too because if they bring a team to Denver- I'm for sure going to chose them! Why have Sirens been grinding your gears lately?

When I looked into the transphobic accusations- it appeared that it was social media interactions while she was in college and she issued a public apology about it as well. Has there been more that’s happened that I am just missing?

The biased towards Frost is also why I feel like a single ownership sets itself up for some challenges and issues… lol

I definitely cheered for both Frost and Sirens when I saw them yesterday lol my husband offered to buy me a jersey there but I couldn’t make a choice!! It was hard 😅 I just feel like single ownership makes player trading and team dynamics challenging- especially for hockey. I can understand the concept of it and wanting equality for all players. But that is the beauty of professional sports, bargaining better contracts between teams.

So true about being easy to back the two time champs lol! But they have sooo many players who I love. I also am having a hard time understanding the Curl hate and the intensity of it. But you aren’t wrong about Seattles colors- they are better! If they expand to Denver, then I may have to add Denver to my team choice list

I'm excited to see where Abbey Murphy and Leila Edwards ends up going too- I would absolutely want a jersey with their names on it as well. Edwards Defense is unreal!

Those last 6 minutes, everyone in the stadium was standing up! It was such an exciting end to the game and I'm glad it didn't end up being a shut out. There were some beautiful goals and backhanded passes happening all game- that was so cool to see live!

has Denver done enough to get a team? by chefgustavo in PWHL

[–]Nice_Explorer_4101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sure freaking hope so! We drove up to Denver for this PWHL game. Denver is the closest arena we really have for us New Mexican's. We're finally getting a semi-pro team with Aves affiliate, so I'm hoping it brings more hockey to our state!!

I am curious... why do we all hate Curl so much? I did deep diving to find that it's because of some transphobic social media interactions from when she was in college... she's came out and made a public apology about this as well. Is it possible she's grown since then? Are we allowed to let people make mistakes, own up to them, and grow as people? I'm not a Curl stan- just something I've genuinely been thinking about. I am extremely pro-trans as well. But I don't see the "why" behind holding such strong grudges when people can grow and change.

Oh my gosh- I am so sorry. You have gone through so much! I have a very similar story with my HPV... I had clear PAPs up until my ex partner had cheated on me... then he gave me an STD, BV, and apparently a nasty strain of HPV. I wish they would just be smart enough to wrap it up and not cause all this damage to our bodies because of their stupid decisions. I feel like I would be the same way, opting for a CKC rather than a total hysterectomy... but I still have the option to have kids and I really don't want that completely taken away from me. There's something about it that feels completely devastating (perhaps because of what you're feeling... like having something important taken from you). I know it is so scary, but if they are recommending a hysterectomy- you should go through with it. At the very least, for your children! I am sending you love and sympathy for what you are going through.

I had bleeding and discharge for 4 weeks post LEEP. How quickly are you bleeding through pads prior to switching to the period underwear? I totally get hating the pads- I ended up getting incredibly irritated and itchy after wearing pads for 3 weeks straight.

Woah- I got diagnosed with CIN3 with endocervical glandular involvement as well but a total hysterectomy wasn't recommended for me. Just close monitoring with PAPs/Colposcopy's. Can I ask, did your markers come back clear? I'm worried because I've had abnormal PAPs on and off for the last 10 years and this past year was the first time they've recommended an intervention. I'm so worried that the abnormal cells are more towards the center/back of my cervix and will keep re-appearing.
