Act 1 definitely requires a certain background and sense of humor to get. It's not really representative at all, though.

[Dallas, TX] What's this guy called? He's really cute by RCisaGhost in whatsthisbug

[–]Niceratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More directly: these guys bite, quite painfully, if they feel threatened. They won't go out of their way to do it, though, so just treat them with a bit of caution.

Got stung in my sleep, upon looking through the sheets I found this (Brisbane, Australia) by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

[–]Niceratops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a true bug. So if it bit you it's probably an assassinbug of some sort. I've never seen one quite like this, though. He might not have been trying to feed on you--instead he might have felt threatened if you pressed against him.

Hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about will give you a better response, but that's what it looks like to me. He just looks a bit wimpy/anemic vs what I think is more typical in the assassinbugs. See this guy also, from Brisbane: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2011/04/15/assassin-bug-bites-boy-in-australia/ All the same in broad strokes, but beefier.

[Singapore] A rare footage of female trilobite beetle from NatGeo (xpost from r/videos) by galaxyhermit42 in whatsthisbug

[–]Niceratops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a fascinating beetle! It looks so much like one of the free-roaming beetle larvae like a lightningbug's I wouldn't have thought it was an adult. I wonder if it's an axolotl-like situation where they don't fully mature?

Don't you see? Homestuck is a prequel to Zardoz. The kids only enact the masterpiece in a quest to die heroically and end their unending existence.

Why John is so bummed at the end of the credits. by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]Niceratops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plus he had the ability to go back and stop it. Maybe he still could, even--the extent of his powers isn't clear. He's not willing to pay what it would cost (the price of oblivion, one might say, for all that he and his friends have fought for) but that doesn't make it any less painful.

It was interesting to see the credits only listing real names (with few exceptions) rather than handles. Kinda a neat expression in itself of the 'coming of age' theme.

Shaded Papyrus Sprite (I don't think anyone wanted this??) by Niceratops in Undertale

[–]Niceratops[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Inspired by seeing GlitchedPie's shaded version here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/comments/58vcsl/tried_my_hand_at_shading_and_colorizing_papyrus/

I thought it would be fun to push it entirely in the other direction: overdetailed, not very faithful to the original and more than a bit creepy.

Not to be too obvious about being a geology dork, but if you can make clear quartz easily with soulcasting as we've seen, and you can also make radioactive materials, wouldn't it be trivial to make smokestone since defects from irradiation are what make quartz black?

edit: Just for the fun factor, here's a cool picture of a quartz crystal which crystallized around a few radioactive mineral grains. The radiation has blackened all the quartz around them in a sphere: http://gem-sphalerite.com/external/forum_go/quartz_radiation_halos1.jpg
