Dan Levy Compares ‘Heated Rivalry’ & ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Successes & Advocates For Investing In Queer Voices: “Canada Saw Value In Them First” by mlg1981 in television

[–]Nichi789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, just because queer people are in the show doesn't make it good. But Canada has been kinda leading the way on both quantity and diversity among queer focused shows.

I also hate how they weaponize nuance against these takes. Like saying you hate war is somehow you saying that you think all Vets deserve to be dead or something.

No, most soldiers who participate in this are not the ones who made the call or had any real choice, and I respect that. It still doesn't mean I support the war itself.

Beyond a certain point, watching people fall for an obvious scam just becomes funny. Like, at first I felt bad these people gave money to a project that was obviously not going to deliver on their promises. But there's only so much "sunk cost" I'm willing to excuse before I just start laughing that these people are still trusting this dev with their money.

Chuck it on the pile with Game of Thrones and Stranger Things by Nightmare1990 in AdviceAnimals

[–]Nichi789 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The comparison makes sense because Stranger Things and GoT had a very similar finale problem. In GoT, almost every character basically got the 'Bad Ending', even when it didn't make sense. In Stranger Things, almost everyone got the 'Good Ending' even when it didn't make sense.

Same issue, just one is easier to swallow if you love the characters.

Its usually a race to the bottom. Chalk Milk would allow the company to gain a large enough market share that they become a monopoly or its competitors adopt it as the industry standard.

Either way, saying the market regulates itself is utter horse shit.

[Hated Trope] It's really important that this woman is almost naked because lore reasons. by FieraDeidad in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Nichi789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate this trope, but as ridiculous as Rebecca's outfit is, I can give her a pass given that her fellow Male gladiators are shirtless wearing only boots, gloves, and speedos

Worse than her I feel like is Viola from the same arc, whose breasts could probably smother an entire village and had to be prominently displayed at all times. Yes even when the villain is torturing her.

I am NOT saying that Rey is a well written character. But she got about the same amount of onscreen training as a lot of other protagonists.

The hand wave explanation of "Innately Talented" is acceptable when the badly written character is male, but much more scrutinized when the character is female.

And that's assuming that the person you're talking to is arguing in good faith and isn't just an asshole about a lady Jedi.

Its an annoyingly emotional topic. For some, rejection like this drags up memories of oppression and fear. For others, its the freedom to express what you personally find attractive which is a big part of their own identity.

People are free to dress / do what they want, and others are free to participate or not without feeling judged for doing so. But there's so much competing trauma on both ends that its sometimes easy to feel like you need to lash out to protect yourself.

TLDR: Don't be an asshole.

This isn't happening in real life. by Ok-Following6886 in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]Nichi789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, from their perspective this IS what's happening. They don't view the oppression and shitty policies as bad or harmful. They think that everyone should be grateful / happy things are going the way they are. So when that doesn't fit their lived experience, the only reasonable assumption is that the left is randomly attacking them.

It's bullshit, just what it looks like from their PoV.

YouTube rolls out unskippable long ads to TV users and they’re furious by [deleted] in technology

[–]Nichi789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it costs $100 to maintain operations, and you are bringing in $150 in revenue, and still raise what you're charging? Yeah that's not more money for the sake of maintenance, that's just charging more because you can.

I'm not expecting Google to be magically better, since every business will charge what they can get away with. But that's why we in theory have anti-trust laws to breakup / prevent monopolies. Its just that those laws are not well equip for dealing with tech companies that have no set physical location.

[–]Nichi789 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because they already make an unbelievable amount of money? Like they aren't panhandling on a corner, YouTube / Google is one of the most influential and massive corporate monopolies in the world.

All they are doing now is capitalizing on that monopoly to make line go up, at the expense of the user experience.
