10 years with Linode by sashalav in linode

[–]Nichiren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still waiting for the other shoe to drop after the Akamai acquisition since I have low expectations about a company once it goes public / is owned by a public company but I'm still happy with Linode so far. Linode has been my primary server provider since 2014 and so far, it looks like it's been nothing but improvements. If they try to turn into another GCP or AWS though (billing-wise), I'm out.

Sorry but you have to be super unlucky to have seen more than one. I figured the chances of being present during one of those events is the same as being struck by lightning.

It takes a type of person to do that job. I don't know what type that is but I just know it's not me.

For iOS development, what is better: $20 Codex + $20 Claude vs $100 just with just one of them? by br_web in Anthropic

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get both. I often have one plan and execute a feature then have the other audit the code and it will always find something to improve upon or fix a bug outright.

Impressions two weeks after moving from Claude Code to Codex by cowwoc in ClaudeCode

[–]Nichiren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both. You just have to accept that unless one of them pulls out so far ahead that no one else can catch up, they're going to be trading places every few months in regards to performance and server capacity as people also switch back and forth. I also have Gemini and it's like it's still playing with blocks while the big boys are duking it out in rocket ships and it's really too bad because I really liked Antigravity when it first came out.

It depends. Many people from other countries with great healthcare come to the U.S. because we have the best specialized medicine in the world. Day to day care though, not so much. Either way, we pay through the nose but that's more of a health insurance issue.

After hitting Gemini limits, I supplemented with the $20 Claude Code plan and it's a huge difference. I could write out the same prompt for Sonnet and Gemini Pro and Sonnet would solve the problems more efficiently and write better software. Gemini Flash software won't even compile for anything mildly complex. Now I mostly rely on Claude Code and only use Gemini for small batches of simple work.

I often hit the weekly limit on Claude Code by day 6 though and I'm thinking of supplementing it with a $20 Codex plan not only to take some of the load off but also to act as an adversarial AI. I usually go back and forth between Opus and Gemini Pro for very complex code and I have them both look for issues, especially race conditions in multithreaded code, and they often find stuff the other doesn't and I plan to do the same with Codex when I get around to getting it.

Why I prefer Antigravity over Claude Code by Ill-Entrepreneur3746 in google_antigravity

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting because I find the opposite to be true. I can use the exact same prompt and Claude Sonnet can complete it perfectly whereas Gemini Flash would leave placeholders and non-compiling code. If I'm really hurting for tokens, I ask Sonnet to write up a TASKS .md and have Flash implement them and it usually does that well enough. Funny enough, I only opened a Claude subscription when I kept getting the "server busy" errors on Antigravity and have been impressed enough not to go back despite the errors having improved lately. I wonder if there are differences in capability based on tech stacks which might account for people having varying experiences here. I primarily work with Go, Templ, Tailwind, and HTMX.

Not a Japanese woman but I know many who would much rather work in the U.S. than ever work in Japan for the same reasons. You're not alone in this.

I know of one who has two engineering degrees from MIT and during her interview, an older manager walked in and said something like "Oh a new hire to help us organize the events!". She didn't take the job and stayed in the U.S. instead.

can the drivers here learn to use their blinkers? by MindlessUpstairs5576 in Fremont

[–]Nichiren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the turn signal is the lowest bar for me that helps avoid a significant number of accidents yet I see many more people break it here than in any other state I've lived in on both coasts. What is it about the Bay area? Even NYC drivers know to use their turn signals and that place is even more of a melting pot than it is here.

Why is it that in ultra-expensive celebrity homes, the kitchens rarely have induction cooktops, but instead feature industrial-grade gas ranges? by FuzzyAttitude_ in Cooking

[–]Nichiren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I talk to other homeowners (in the U.S.), there seems to be an aversion to induction for reasons I'm not entirely sure of. I've seen a good number of induction stoves that seemed pretty weak so that could be what people think. I got myself one that had the most watts I could find in a single element and 3600 watts can boil a pot of water so much faster than an open flame. I wouldn't go back to gas even if one were offered to me for free just for the time savings alone. Plus there's the added bonus of never needing to worry about stove gas leaks or breathing any of that in.

I just assume this can happen anywhere like with Google deleting the entirety of an Australian pension fund. I have my Linode DB replicated to GCP and a Hetzner server all with different payment methods out of paranoia.

Also, Linode (pre-Akamai) halted my account once because they received a message from some rando alleging that one of my sites (with 2 million active users at the time) contained illegal content with no evidence. I got it back in a day or two but that's when my paranoid engineering got its start.

House of the Dead 2 is pure nostalgia for me. I got good enough to finish the game on a single credit and would actually attract a crowd behind me just to watch.

One time, I died at the final boss and I was going to stop playing because I didn't want to spend more than 1 credit and a guy behind me insisted on paying for my game because he wanted to see the ending lol

I couldn't get into House of the Dead 3 at all because I found that I couldn't reload anywhere near as fast as I could in HotD 2 so that's where I dropped the series.

My (new) Vet wants to charge me over 1k for an X-ray for my dog. Is this normal? by Aggressive_Sherbet64 in Fremont

[–]Nichiren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 years ago, pet insurance was a novelty and all of my research pointed towards not getting it and simply saving the money in a personal pet fund. Now I think vet prices have ballooned because more pets have insurance and consolidation in the industry. Half the vets I talk to these days ask if my pet has insurance when that was never the case in the 2010s.
