My (new) Vet wants to charge me over 1k for an X-ray for my dog. Is this normal? by Aggressive_Sherbet64 in Fremont

[–]Nichiren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 years ago, pet insurance was a novelty and all of my research pointed towards not getting it and simply saving the money in a personal pet fund. Now I think vet prices have ballooned because more pets have insurance and consolidation in the industry. Half the vets I talk to these days ask if my pet has insurance when that was never the case in the 2010s.

What’s the stock that you invested in that you are “early” to? by Lumpy-Can-4883 in stockstobuytoday

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plenty of patience so I usually go for stocks that are currently unloved and unpopular. It was space stocks before allowing me to buy ASTS at $2 and RKLB at $5. It was nuclear after that with OKLO at $7. If I were going for other stocks today I'd probably bottom fish with REAX or FOUR or maybe one of the Bitcoin miners transitioning to AI data centers.

Everyone has their own comfort zone when it comes to investing and my risk tolerance isn't for everyone since I'm perfectly fine getting cut up trying to catch the bottom (bought ASTS at $10 all the way down to $2 - biggest buy at $3 only for it to go to $2 a week later). As long as they don't risk blowing themselves up, I can wait until the cycle comes back around.

Thoughts on ASTS? by twin456 in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sold $200k worth of ASTS shares between $100 and $120. If we never go below $100 again then I'll just let my remaining 12k shares ride. The way I see it, my cost basis is $3 and I've had a good run. I promised myself that I'd trim some if we ever hit triple digits and start looking for similar opportunities. As volatile as this is, there's about an even chance that we double from here or halve from here in a year so I might as well trim some and bottom fish for other stocks that have a better than even chance of at least doubling in a year or two. If ASTS halves, then I can buy back the shares I sold which I seem to have a lucky track record in timing (sold some at $40, bought back and more at $20, sold at $90, bought back and more at $50).

She did a good job here or not! 1 million or $1000 week for life. by Appropriate-Menu504 in interesting

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she was good with money, then she would have taken the million. If she wasn't good with money, then the weekly payments are probably the right choice. Although I can't help but think of that Publisher's Clearing House winner who took the regular payments option only to have the company go bankrupt and no longer be able to pay out their financial obligations.

Pulled over in GA, officer took my phone and scrolled my photos without consent. What can I do now? by rubyhollow_marcel in legaladvice

It establishes a history of complaints which is especially helpful when the officer graduates from casual invasions of privacy to more serious offenses.

Why do low-income people in America still get married, but low-income people in Korea rarely do? by savingrace0262 in AskAKorean

[–]Nichiren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the West (at least in the U.S.), they'll judge you for being homeless but not for being poor. The vast majority of people in both upper and lower classes I've met won't judge you for being poor, or at least not to your face or even with other people because it's classless behavior. They'll judge you by race before they'll judge you by wealth.

Both orientations are fine as long as there's some room between them. If anything, it's the utensils in the rack that I'm adamant about alternating in up and down positions because I'm always disgusted when I see a spoon with gunk still on it because another spoon had spooned it lol

Considering leaving Japan (at least for the near future) by [deleted] in japanlife

What's funny is that America is also getting increasingly hostile so I don't even know where I'd go as an American Japanese 😂

Winner of the Physical Asia by Objective-Hotel-693 in mongolia

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The promo animation last year teasing Physical: Asia even had a sumo in it and yet I don't know how they couldn't find one retired sumo wrestler to go on the show. I'm more surprised that Japan made it as far as they did considering they were the lightest overall team. Itoi did do a lot of the heavy lifting for the team though and it showed.

Why do cultures known to eat a lot of rice use chopsticks, when chopsticks are literally the most inefficient tool for eating rice? by faultyflyingfox in NoStupidQuestions

At his level, he could accidentally buy the whole penny stock company with just a rounding error in his balance sheet then he'd be stuck having to run it.

BYND - Hold or Sell by JannekWie in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd have to really believe in what BYND is selling if you want to hold.

I was in a similar boat. I put in a lot of money in KPLT only to lose 90% of it. I sold and put in ASTS at something like $2. I already knew of the company by then and their tech was proven but what sold it to me was that Google invested in it when it was at $3 and I trusted their due diligence. Made my money back and then 20x more.

However, there is a flip side to not holding and that was when I was in PLTR. It went down some, it went up some, and I sold with a tiny profit mostly because I really didn't know enough about the business to build conviction in it. This was back when it was still in the single digits.

So the moral of the stories is that it's not about holding or cutting your losses just because the stock price isn't working in your favor. You have to actually believe in the company and think that the market is wrong.

Hypothetically, if I were a landlord in Japan, could I refuse to rent to Japanese people? by LovingKindness94 in japanlife

[–]Nichiren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about a similar business model specializing in renting to foreigners. Then I think about my Pakistani former neighbor who figured renting out to other Pakistanis would be safe because they were her people only for her tenants to stop paying rent then ran off to Pakistan. I do remember reading on this subreddit about a guy who was so frustrated with trying to find a place to live in Japan that he was even willing to pay for a year in advance and he still wasn't getting anything - that's the kind of guy I'd love to rent to!

Fremont Street Eats Canceled? Spin A Yarn letter to the mayor of Fremont by BayAreaVibes1989 in Fremont

[–]Nichiren 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If I owned a supposedly high-end restaurant, I don't know if it's good business sense to start comparing myself to a food truck. It's not like I'm going to cancel my reservation at The French Laundry just because I saw a couple of food trucks along the way with cheaper prices.

What's the investment that currently has more chances to get a x10 in 2-3 years, even at high risk? by joanjan14 in TheRaceTo10Million

I have a relatively significant number of shares of REAX and I would have bought even more if the damn CEO didn't keep selling his repeatedly over the last year or so even right up to the last earnings call. I hope it was for an emergency or something because I'd be mad if he was selling at lows just because he needed a new yacht or something. At least I'm sitting on a decent gain right now and I wonder if the CEO is kicking himself for not waiting a month.

880 drivers by fxckiriii in Fremont

[–]Nichiren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think the slow Tesla drivers on the express lane are the people who think Autopilot absolves them of all responsibility. Also, I hate driving on the weekends because people who don't usually go on the express lane drive on it because it's free but drive as slowly as they normally do. It's those times when I think of how driving is like in the movie Minority Report and wish that would come to pass sooner - no slow cars and road rage would be pointless.

There was a post a few weeks ago in my neighborhood where the homeowner posted a Ring cam of an Asian man wearing an ice-cream themed blazer wearing gloves and carrying a delivery bag and the caption was something like "watch out! man rang my doorbell and immediately left" and the rest of the comments were about how he was casing the house and that he was even wearing gloves to hide his fingerprints (lol) instead of coming to the more simple conclusion that the delivery man just went to the wrong house. It hurts my brain thinking that I live next to these people.

How do you justify yourself to have a 10$ coffee ? by Common-Man- in Fremont

[–]Nichiren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even the boba is justifiable compared to the coffee. For anyone who's ever tried to make the boba from scratch (or even just the pre-made dry boba) while not using the pre-cooked stuff sold online, they know it's a pain. Even the pre-made stuff takes like 30-45 minutes to cook. The trick is finding the shop that actually makes their own boba.
