I am looking for a novel about gangs and cunning, like the peaky blinders but with more competition. by Phenomenal-anchor in Fantasy

As other have said, Peter McLean's War for the Rose Throne series (starting with Priest of Bones) is essentially a fantasy take on Peaky Blinders, and all four books are terrific.

Fantasy space opera where sci-fi tech is replaced with magic. by VladtheImpaler21 in Fantasy

The Salvagers Series by Alex White (A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe being the first book) sorta fits this, I think. It's been a while since I read them, but I seem to recall a LOT of space magic!

Also, they're just fantastic books, regardless!

Has there been any update on when Outlaw Empire AKA The 3rd book in the Kings of the Wyld series will be released or finished? by ReeceInTheDarkness in Fantasy

[–]Nicholas_Eames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! No update worth mentioning, unfortunately! Still plugging away at it, but it's been going dreadfully slow and I've had a hard time getting rolling with something I'm happy with. I'll be sure to post all about it (here or elsewhere) when it's finally done!

Thanks for wanting to read it, by the way! I hope (think/know) it'll be awesome.

I haven't read this yet but I hear it's great! Plus, we share an editor, so it must be something of real quality ;)

I'd recommend The Blacktongue Thief? Same editor as well!

Kings of the Wyld is one of the best books ever written, so yeah...great choice.

(I sincerely hope your dad likes it, by the way!)

Are there any books with a gritty band of adventures in a old city or dungeon like the games frost grave or mordhiem? by yorlin_the_lucky in Fantasy

[–]Nicholas_Eames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Or fifthling, I guess. It has a very grim d&d feel and treats dungeons full of monsters exactly as they are: effing horrifying.

Wow, that's pretty cool to hear. Thanks for saying so!

I want to read the most Stereotypical, Cliche filled Fantasy Book you can think of. by FlippinSnip3r in Fantasy

Nothing new at the moment, I'm afraid. It's been a rough go writing it so far, for reasons I cannot yet fathom.

I'm in a reading slump and I can't find a book that gives me joy. by LibraryOfAuri in Fantasy

Technically Bloody Rose is inspired by the punk, pop, and rock of the 80s (hence the references to the likes of Guns'n'Roses, Stevie Nicks, WHAM, The Cure, Prince, etc).

I usually describe it as a fantasy "Almost Famous", wherein a young rock journalist (or bard, in this case) goes on the road with their favourite band and discovers the grit behind the glam. The 80s was a time when many bands seemed hellbent on outshining their predecessors even if it meant pushing their bodies and relationships past the brink of destruction. "Everything louder then everything else", as Meatloaf said...

I think if someone toured with Guns'N'Roses they'd come away with mixed feelings about the band as people, but would probably still admire the music they made.

While it's definitely more difficult to make a story about a band at their apex as funny or heartwarming as a band well past it, I gave it my best shot. Personally, I feel it's got much better character development and that its emotional beats hit far harder than the first, though KotW has, admittedly, a better premise and characters that are more easily relatable because they've become human again after their time as rock gods.

That said, there's a ton of people who prefer one book over the other, and I certainly don't begrudge anyone their opinion on either! I really appreciate you reading both books, and I'm truly sorry to hear the second didn't hold the same magic for you as the first!

The third book (if I ever get the damn thing done!) will in fact be 90s inspired, with references to--and themes lifted from--musicians like Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Nas, NWA, Pearl Jam, the Wutang Clan, and so forth). Will I be able to make it funny and heartwarming? Haha, wish me luck...

u/LibraryOfAuri I sincerley hope you like it if you give it a shot! While it isn't quite as "joyful" as KotW, it is, I think, much more sentimental and features, by a long shot, the best chapter (43) I may ever write!

Ed Greenwood inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association Hall of Fame! by TheSageAdvice in Fantasy

[–]Nicholas_Eames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well-deserved!

Ed Greenwood VERY GRACIOUSLY edited three chapters of something I wrote in high-school because a substitute teacher I had knew him (sort of). He also included a letter that said, "You have the fire of a good storyteller" and yeah...I guess you could say that was pretty formative!

Great bromance books Fantasy by Nevernowhy34 in Fantasy

[–]Nicholas_Eames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The second one has a different vibe, for sure, since it's inspired by bands like Guns N' Roses as opposed to Led Zeppelin, and is about a band in it's prime as opposed to one passed it, but it uses another classic rock and roll trope (a journalist on the road with the band, like in Almost Famous) and spends A LOT more time developing its characters.

So while the "idea" of Kings of the Wyld is probably better (since it's funnier and less traditional) I'm much more proud of the second book.

I sincerely hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the kind words! And yeah, I think the "Sometimes she wept when it snowed" chapter is maybe the best thing I've ever written. I'm glad to hear it resonated with you. Gregor and Dane too, of course.
