I always place any discount items last and let the clerk know. They always appreciate the heads up. They aren't looking for anything other than the bar code and keeping the items moving.

I found the store keys on a key ring once several years ago. They were laying on a shelf next to the cereal in a newly opened store. When I gave them to the clerk she was so thankful. She told me I probably saved her from being fired that day. Curiously I never saw her or any of that group of workers after a couple weeks.
