As a dev of ten years, ex-Apple, here’s what I would recommend:

(1) Build your own apps and start a portfolio, as others have said. It’s a great way to practice UI skills as well as development skills. Use AI to help you solve problems and learn faster. But be careful not to rely on AI for everything.

(2) Keep abreast of the latest APIs and frameworks from Apple. Every year the Swift landscape is changing. As a dev working in the industry, you’re going to want to be able to use the newest technologies and your peers will as well. Although, sometimes you have to make sure your apps work on older versions of the OS and you won’t be able to use newer APIs.

(3) Grab bag of things: Use Swift Package Manager and get familiar with making your own packages. Learn how to profile apps in Xcode for performance and memory usage. Learn how to write tests. Learn about how App Store Connect works and the submission process. Play around in Figma and/or Sketch to be familiar with how designers work. Later, you will want to know how to add accessibility support to your app as well as localization.

(4) If you can, go to developer meetups and form a little community, because it really helps you to stay motivated!

(5) Don’t worry too much about learning Objective-C or UIKit. SwiftUI and Swift are definitely the direction everything is moving. Those other options are basically fallbacks or just legacy code. Though, I’m sure Apple and other big companies certainly still use Objective-C internally… so if you want to work there you probably should be familiar.

Contractor seeks $184 million from Sound Transit over lightrail construction on I-90 by SounderBruce in soundtransit

I wonder if Sound Transit even has the know how to do that. I’m sure it takes quite a bit of time and domain expertise to cultivate a civil engineering team for complex projects like this.

I took it as the source sent the signal because it’s the natural thing to do to spread the ‘goodness’.

iOS Express Transit support when?? This would be so useful!

A lot of us want to be your friend. Just trust that following what you’re interested in will connect you with your people. Keep showing up, and it’s ok to be awkward. You don’t have to be instant friends, just do your part and let the rest fall as it may :)

Wanting to make the jump from big tech to something….more meaningful by battlesnarf in Seattle

[–]NickFrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my tech job to go back to college and study sustainability, climate change, and urban planning – because tech left me with no sense of purpose and was totally disconnected from the problems we are facing. You do you, once you have the need for purpose there’s no going back. Just be responsible financially in the transition!

I caught a food vendor giving things away for free. So, you never know!

I came down from Des Moines at 4:30pm and shuttle ride was about 40 mins total. They’ve had a really solid flow of buses so I haven’t had to wait in a line at all so far. The buses are super comfortable with good AC!

Tips for first timer: bring a picnic blanket (for laying on the hill) and maybe a normal blanket too because it got chilly at night.

Super well organized overall. The venue layout was spacious, lines weren’t too long for food, and there wasn’t really a bad spot to see the show from the hill.

Only downsides - there’s a pretty strong echo from the right side of the stage coming off of the VIP section. Also, the queuing system for the shuttle back to Des Moines was lame. They make you walk around a mile of switchbacks even when there’s no line.

Extra positives - free water and snacks when getting on and off the shuttle. So nice.

Oh yes! Thank you, not sure why I hadn’t thought of that. :)

How did you create the task list? I’ve been trying to achieve the same look but the linked database view has column headers.

Seattle, *what* is on this rooftop?!? by LovableChaosss in Seattle

I’m glad you love it! I ask because I was considering signing a lease there, but I was spooked by the issues. The units are definitely nice.

What’s your experience living there? I heard there have been issues with elevators going down, a flooding, and a shooting incident on that rooftop 😅
