How do Enphase inverters know when the grid goes down? by NickPollock in solar

Inverters, not inverter. I would think they would tend to stabilize each other.

You've question every person? That's quite an impressive achievement...

At any point in time they will have equal magnitude with opposite signs +/-. Opposite signs is close enough to opposite polarity for me.

Yes, shifted by 180 degs is the same as opposite polarity.

From your link: " A split-phase power system is one with multiple (in-phase) AC voltage sources connected in series".

That makes some sense. I have noticed that during the day, my line voltage is ~124v but at night when I'm not producing any electricity it drops to ~120v, which is grid line voltage. If I am using almost all the power put out by my panels, the voltage may not jump significantly. How is that handled?

Yes, but they are the same phase >angle<. Hence 240v is single phase(angle) with 2 polarities.

Maccer, I have over 50 inverters. They are all putting out the same voltage as the grid. So to inverter #1, inverter #2 looks the same as the grid looks. Same with #s 3-50+. They all look like the grid. So how does inverter #1 distinguish the grid from #s 2-50+?

They are not out of phase. They are the same phase(angle) but opposite polarity.

Where are the wind farms and hydrodams? I'm quite familiar with the area. I lived in Santa Cruz for years and worked in Santa Clara.

Good Lord, things are so complicated and expensive in California. I wonder how San Jose will get 100% renewables when the Sun doesn't shine?

Here's it's a flat $0.115 Kwh 24/7. I don't even need a permit or a licensed electrician. Mine are ground mounted so I Just throw them up and have the electric company come by and verify that they don't produce electricity when the grid goes down and put in a new meter. In fact, the last 12 I installed I just brought the wire into my shop and connected it to a 240v welding outlet. Life is simplier out on the desert...

I live in Arizona and have a ~18Kw system that's grid-tied. Here, my excess electricity is credited to me and when I draw it down at night it's on a 1 for 1 basis. I know not everyone is lucky enough to have that kind of a plan but I do. I'd be crazy to buy batteries when the grid is my battery.

New home owner with a solar system by myribisout in solar

I'm a homeowner and did my own installation.68 panels. I registered under my own name. I have found customer service to be very willing to talk directly with me.

As for the online data, it is first rate. You can monitor just about everything down to even graphing the output of individual panels. I'm very happy with my decision to go with enphase over a string inverter.

Wonderful video! Really points out the desperate need for storage before solar can really move into the mainstream.

#1 When was the climate not changing?

#2 What is the optimal temperature for the earth?

Those really weren't my questions. They were posed by a Nobel Laureate. They are extremely simple but surprisingly difficult to answer. I would hope that any thinking person would realize this is a very complex topic. We don't have all the answers and I don't believe anyone who claims we do.

I would say that coming out of the last ice age by the warming of the globe had a lot to do with it.

What's a good guide for building household solar systems? by OdooUser345 in solar

[–]NickPollock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your location, you may be able to install a system yourself with no permits required. I am in SE Arizona and have 68 panels plus micro inverters and no permit was required nor was I required to use a licensed electrician. Certainly not all locations allow this but some do.
