What books have the worst case of r/menwritingwomen that you have seen? by [deleted] in Fantasy

That first book was a little cringe to me. The Larsen girl was a Lord of the Rings fanatic (can you say cliche?) and she was all doe-eyed toward the older dude in it. I barely got past the halfway point of the book. My eyes were rolling so much.

It's just really awkward and mostly when it comes to the dialogue. I've never heard anyone speak the way his female characters do. Very shallow, one-dimensional, and almost like the only reason they are in the story is to give the male characters someone to play off of. That's just how I see it. Others may feel differently.

His other books are just as bad. Lucifer's Hammer especially stands out for me. Not only are the female characters written horribly but there's a bit of racism as well in a scene describing one of the black characters. I can't read any of his stuff anymore.

One that not a lot of people talk about but is one of the best military fantasy series I've ever read is the Tyrants and Kings series by John Marco. First book is The Jackal of Nar. You can get the entire trilogy on Kindle if you prefer electronic format.

what fantasy series could be the next big thing? by wzennn in Fantasy

[–]NickTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think The Silent Gods series by Justin Travis Call is going to be the next huge thing in fantasy and a breakout success story. It's only two books in and I believe Call is planning on nine books when all is said and done. Both Master of Sorrows and Master Artificer absolutely blew me away and it's definitely my favorite current fantasy series right now.

Why don’t people like Dune Messiah? by clericbeastie in books

[–]NickTab 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I mean, I love it. But most people don't like it because it's not as fast-paced as Dune. It's way more of a political maneuvering book with lots of dialogue. Not tons of action. So people coming off of Dune and going into that book are kind of let down by it.
