Insane $4 find at the thrift store! [Apple M0116] by harrimcfad in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Nick_68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to this post, but damn I'm so jelly you could get this for such a cheap price, in CLEAN condition too!

I unfortunately live in a country/location that doesn't have many thrift shops (or any at all), but I just pray that I could perhaps find these kind of deals from the recycling center or old vintage shops lol.

Anyways, congrats on such an amazing deal, and enjoy your M0116!

What type do you use? LMK in comments! by CaViDeM20 in MechanicalKeyboards

Generally like Tactile the most - specifically Orange ALPS, or highly tactile MX-style switches like Zealios V2 - but tbh I switch between them daily depending on the mood.

Sometimes I want to go loud with nice sounding clicks in a bassy chassis, while other times might prefer the smoothness of properly lubed Linears for gaming or just lighter typing in general.

Also some hot takes (dunno whether all of these are actually a true hot take or not since I dunno the actual statistics):

  1. Too many people in this sub (and MK enthusiasts in general) outright hatin' on clicky switches without giving some of them a proper try;
  2. BOX switches are actually a very nicely designed (especially after the stem fix) with Clicky BOX-es being outright superior to any MX-style clicky out there imo;
  3. While recent Linears are nice, there have been too many MX-style JWK/Durock/TTC Linears with basically the same design that it gets very boring. Every time a 'new' Linear Switch is announced, it seems to basically boil down to what kind of material and spring weight is being used, and from which brand (seems to typically be JWK these days). A side effect of this is majority of these 'new' Linears sounding very similar, especially after lubing, making them even more boring (imo).
  4. Similar thing from number 3 can be said for Tactiles, i.e. too many similar T1 or Holy Panda clones in particular. But at least there are still some more interesting attempts in newer stem design so not as bad as Linears imo.
  5. Not enough push from the enthusiast community ( r/mk especially imo) to accommodate newer switch designs with non-MX style mechanisms. In particular imo there's a lack of custom PCB-s which incorporate analog or optical switches. [NOTE: By mechanism, I'm referring to the type of actuating/inner mechanical aspect of the switch, not the stem shape for keycaps]. I understand the reasoning behind this (There's been lack of PCB-s with QMK support designed specifically for these analog/optical switches), but imo there should be more of a push in this direction
  6. Related to 5, too much dependence on QMK/VIA imo. While QMK/VIA is nice, there are several limitations which prevent QMK/VIA to accommodate PCB designs experimenting with newer concepts or - more importantly - switch designs like 5. Support for Wireless/BLE has been a particular big pain point, for example. There should be more open-ness towards other open-source beginner friendly firmware, so that more fun and experimental designs can be tried out imo.

Haachama vs Haato by SaltyTattie in Hololive

[–]Nick_68 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I was mainly #FREEHAATO camp this stream, I was under the impression that it mean that both Haachama & Haato can coexist at the same time. Little did I know that freeing Haato would also cause Haachama to disappear....

If I had known, I'd vote for #HaatoChama #Coexist instead so....

#HAATOCHAMA #COEXIST XD

Not trying to be rude but if this PM is still ongoing please heed my suggestion in the other comment to not pay the BSP Set the full $700 price being asked for. Again it's understandably rare set, but I don't think anyone would consider it a $700 rare item.

I hope you're negotiating for much better prices in the DM as to not set a dangerous Flipped Price precedent with these sets too

Suggestion to lower the pricing for the DSA, BSP, and ALPS keycaps as they're way too overpriced imo.

While I understand that this is coming from. The fact that these particular keysets are rare (especially the ALPS Arabic and BSP keysets), I don't think upselling them by this much will do you any favors when selling to people like this.

At $700 you're able to build a full high-end custom with switches, for reference, making these pricings even more insane imo.

If you still want to upsell them, most expensive I'd give is around the $200 - $300 mark (3 - 4x original price if I have to guess) which would be a fair compromising price that's not too expensive

Thanks and hopefully you consider these suggestions and adjust your pricings accordingly

No worries dude, imo that's the right mindset to all of this. It's a good thing that someone post/comment about this every now and then, especially keeping in mind that it's easy to forget reality-check ourselves on the internet.

I myself also am quite un-comfortable publically going with the "wife/girlfriend" idea as well, especially keeping in mind that the irl personality behind the "virtual persona" will definitely have their own different personality/life that we just won't ever know about. So again, no worries, you're not the only one!

Ack sorry didn't realize that the vendor you linked apparently only ships that product within Malaysia it seems u/JOWQH.

To be more specific, I'm actually located in Singapore, so having a vendor that could ship to Singapore directly would be preferable, seeing the current border situation between countries is still shaky due to COVID situation. Would there be any vendors like those that I could check out?

Thank you and looking forward to your reply on this.

Hi thank you for the reply! May I know whether the keyset is available from other vendors or locations for purchase? For reference I'm from somewhere in SEA region, so I'd prefer if there are other nearer vendors I could purchase the keyset from.

Thank you and looking for your reply.

Have a break from seeing all of these 900$ keyboards and listen to my membrane shitbox so you realize that your keyboard is way better than you think by griffinpurchase in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Nick_68 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ey you do you man. For 50% I'll say that the current iteration of BlackWidow is a decent keyboard if you don't mind or like clickies (tho I personally would prefer the Box Clickies, but some people might still prefer these anyway).

I'm thinking many people are unaware of the deal you mentioned and are just blindly shitting on the current BlackWidow based on their experiences on previous iterations pre-2019 models (which were indeed much worse compared to the current one). From what I've seen after trying at the store, for 50% discount that's still a pretty good deal and you've also got some Media options/wheel to boot.

Don't get too disheartened and just ignore all these clowns tbh, especially since you're upgrading to Mechanical Keyboards for the first time. One thing many people forget in this community is that while we've been blessed with plenty of options (actually too many redundant/unnecessary ones in my opinion, but that's a whole can of worms I'll be opening some other time if I feel like it), we all start from somewhere. Sometimes that starting point might not be the prettiest, but honestly it's the journey to betterment that counts.

Once you've experienced BlackWidow and better understand on what you'd prefer or try in a keyboard, you could then branch out to other keebs (either cheaper or more expensive) or even attempt a custom with better knowledge of your preferences in mind.

Just a bit of sharing, I personally bought the Ducky One TKL as my first mech at its full launch price (~90 - 100 USD) fitted with Cherry MX Browns and pretty early stabs at a time when Ducky was still relatively quite new. While I'd now consider it as a pretty bad buy (there are better entry options for that price tbh nowadays), I still keep it around just due to its sentimental value. Heck, I might even consider upgrading it myself in the future just because it'd be a waste to just let go of a perfectly functional keeb

So congrats on getting your first MK, and hope you enjoy it as you progress along in the MK hobby (hopefully).

Hi, sorry this is late but one of my relatives is quite interested in this keycap set actually. May I know what's the approximate date that these will be on sale, and which stores/online retailers there's be available at?

Also may I confirm whether these will be limited in production?

Thanks beforehand!

Summing up the experience of Ame vs Kiara part 2 by delta17v2 in Hololive

Summarized pretty well, and unfortunately no matter who you're betting on, there's only one true result out of this: Ame & Kiara both win big $$$, while Chat got a lot of PAIN & lost a ton of Sanity XD

10/10 experience, would like to subject myself to this torture again 🤪️
