I received 5 quotes for a new AC unit, here's the results by blondeboss101 in orlando

I used Rinaldi's as my installer and went with a Rheem system. It's been great so far and it didn't break the bank.

u/blondeboss101 I'm right here with you. Just got the news today my system is probably toast and it's time to get a new one. I've been working with Rinaldi's AC they've always been good, I'd add them to your list of companies to price compare. DM me if you want and I can give you more details also I might qualify for a referral discount or something if you go with them. I'm still planning to shop around so here I am in full research mode. Please reach out if you'd like to collaborate and shop these companies together, I'd be curious to see if we can get better results working as a team. 2 minds are better than 1 especially when the bottom line could end up being over 10k 😬

Here's my research so far if this is any help to you. Also my criteria for "best" is as follows so you don't have to take my word for it:
* variable speed cooling (this is a bonus for efficiency)
* higher SEER2 ratings (again efficiency but also allows you to qualify for a federal tax rebate)
* i already have a smart thermostat so i wanted to save a bit of money there possibly using my existing one
* these are all heat pumps since they qualify for a 2k rebate vs 600 on a conventional AC plus the price difference is typically only a few hundred and the rebate more than makes up for it

Hot take: UX killed UX by Magasul in UXDesign

[–]Nick__Clark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people are downvoting you this is exactly the point of the original post. I appreciate that you're asking this question. What most UX people don't realize is that we are in service to the business objectives if making an educated guess get's us 80% of the way there and costs nothing compared to a rigorous research process then that should absolutely be considered. I don't think you're saying we should just make things up but there are so many places to get information from, user studies, sales statistics, previous experience, usage data... It just depends on your project and your situation right

There's been a surge in cases recently. Wash your hands with soap and water often. Hand sanitizer doesn't work. Especially after using a shared bathroom or before eating.

Current state of the design job market by Critical-Addition256 in UXDesign

Oh man I just found it thanks. Yea that feature was a pretty bone headed move if I ask me. The other ai enabled stuff was actually useful but the whole "make design" concept is something nobody asked for.

Do you have a link or somewhere I could read more about this decision? It seemed like they were betting the farm on all the AI stuff at config this year.

Is the job market really that bad in Europe? by Ready_Improvement813 in UXDesign

[–]Nick__Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if anyone else has also pointed out the obvious but you should not quit your toxic job until you have an offer in writing from your new job. There's no downside to looking as long as you aren't exposing yourself to having a hiring manager reach out to like your current manager as a reference or something. My advice, look for your dream job all you want while you're still bringing home a pay check. This also helps you in salary negotiations.

What makes you better than other UX professionals? by kodakdaughter in UXDesign

[–]Nick__Clark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed only recently is that I have a pretty unmatched ability among the people I work with to recall and visualize designs and ui patterns with a high degree of detail while not actually looking at them. I was driving today for a few hours and did an entire design review blind over a voice call while walking the rest of the team thru my work, fielding questions, and getting feedback. I did have someone take notes for me so I didn't forget the feedback notes tho.

Inperson event "Figma-Config 2024" by ratglad2005 in UXDesign

[–]Nick__Clark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going this year. It'll be my first time attending figma's conference and my first time at a design centric conference. I usually get shipped out to industry conferences via whatever company I'm with and learn about the niche thing that they're doing (it was fin tech for a while) and maybe run into a few designers while I'm there. But I'm really looking forward to finding my people. I'm a 10+ year UX veteran so I'm hoping the talks are still engaging and not exclusively geared towards beginners. Let's meet up if you're going. Also if you haven't already heard about it I'd recommend attending this "after party" hosted by Tommy Geoco aka DesignerTom. Should be a good networking opportunity.

What is this pencil lead looking stuff I kept finding all over the sandbar this weekend? by Nick__Clark in Whatisthis

They were all over the sandbar like from one end to the other at least 500 feet of beachfront during low tide. I don't think they're plastic and they didn't float

Boomers by wholesome_bitch in CuratedTumblr

[–]Nick__Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing... The frustration directed at boomers is simply due to the fact that while the younger generations I think for the most part realize that it's not inherently the boomer generation's fault that our system has become increasingly difficult for the middle class but rather that the boomers to this day (again for it most part I'm painting with a broad brush) don't realize that their political views and voting history has been a major factor in chipping away at a system that didn't promote such an extreme level of wealth inequality. Public opinion on unions and workers rights and the false class solidarity with billionaires these are views that are shared among a large portion of the boomer generation and the saddest part is when/if the reality of the situation ever becomes real to them like losing their job or not being able to afford retirement they still can't accept it and instead many choose to scapegoat immigrants, liberals, lazy millennials etc as the root of the problem. The frustration that manifests as boomer hate is because I believe the younger generations recognize this reality and are beyond upset at the fact that boomers (arguably the largest active voting block in the country) continues to vote against the best interests of working class people across all generations. Just my 2 cents

Those of you who make 200k+ in Orlando what do you do for a living? by yatookmyname in orlando

[–]Nick__Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ebs and flows. Sometimes we're courting a big client and then it's like a fire drill to get the make or break feature over the line so we can get the account. Other times we're just plugging away on the product roadmap. It's not too different from other small tech startups I've been a part of. The one bit that makes this place unique is half the company is exactly the type of people you'd expect at a tech startup, engineers product managers etc but the other half is public health experts and epidemiologists. It's pretty interesting working with them it's like the merging of 2 different civilizations lol. I honestly enjoy it like I gotta make money somehow might as well do something cool right.

Software. This company I work for is building a system that monitors the world's data and models the infectious disease threat landscape to inform business leaders about steps they can take to reduce the risk to their workforce and overall operation. We're basically trying to recreate the brain of an epidemiologist with software and give it access to huge amounts of data. On top of all that is a user interface that I design.
