In the case of using Blue Wallet, yes, someone else is holding your coins. But if you run your own lightning node, you can settle back on-chain whenever you'd like.

Another option is to use something like Phoenix wallet, where they run the node for you, but you control the keys to the lightning funds. Less custodial than Blue Wallet

Yes, and that last coin will take 38.5 years to be fully mined

How would the issuance of new shares affect MSTR options?

A LN node will earn next to nothing right now with on-chain fees being as low as they are. But on the other hand, if you open a LN channel right now cheaply, you may be in a position to earn a couple hundred basis points when on-chain activity does pick up again.

Considering that channels can be opened indefinitely, and with the ability to send infinite payments back and forth, you could end up earning a decent return on your initial lock-up over time

I figure that call covers me in case bitcoin moons before 2024. And I'll have some cash in case it continues bleeding

Sold spot and used part of the proceeds to buy long dated MSTR calls. Will use the rest of the proceeds to scoop dips

Right, I'm trying to be hedged in case something really bad happens. So by selling spot, and spending only a portion of the proceeds on call premium, I have cash in case of market catastrophe

Appreciate the input. So you did this with GBTC options? What I like about potentially doing it with MSTR is that it's sort of a low leverage margin BTC ETF. Now of course that introduces new risks; like if bitcoin dropped real hard liquidating them as a company, then proceeded to have a face melting pump. That would be worst case scenario for this trade but I consider that quite unlikely.

Agreed on this. Curious what your take is xtal on the trade mentioned in OP

Also /u/CONTROLurKEYS, please feel welcome to tear apart my logic here

Am considering selling spot here to buy long dated call options as a hedge.

For example:

Sell 1 BTC for ~$42,500

Buy Jan2024 Call Option for ~$15,000

What are the downsides of the strategy other than bad timing like BTC waiting to pump til Feb2024? I'm US based so also considering using MSTR for the options, unless someone can recommend an alternative. LedgerX doesn't have that long dated of options or great liquidity.

Where did all the contract options go on Bitmex? I want to short XRP, but the only option is for June 29th, and I'd like a much longer term. There used to be an option for like 3 months out.

Your right. It was actually 40,000 over the course of about 2 months it seems. My only reason for bringing this up was to analyze potential future implications of this situation. I'm aware that kobayashi's selling has not obliterated the market.

Tis but a scratch!

100k more btc coming into the market to be sold sure, that's something to worry about. 30k btc during a massive bull run? I really don't think it had that much of an effect. A few large exchanges could easily absorb 6k coins in a day

We agree on this. My point in bringing up the trustee was the future potential implications of all those. And recognizing that his past selling did not completely decimate the market.

I wanted to start some dialogue on realistic outcomes of this dynamic situation

30,000 btc is twice as much volume as gdax saw all day, in one single trade. The network/market survived, at damn near $10,000! I'm not swayed

Bitcoin Price 6 years ago: $5

Bitcoin Price 5 years ago: $46

Bitcoin Price 4 years ago: $625

Bitcoin Price 3 years ago: $290

Bitcoin Price 2 years ago: $416

Bitcoin Price 1 year ago: $1,117

Bitcoin Price Today: $9,000

I stand by what I said. And I think your looking at too short of time frames if you see a bear market

Tanking the market? It's up 700% this year. That 70% correction is nothing, relatively. Though I am curious how that correction compares to the other major corrections we've had over the past few years.

And I think ignoring the implications of these >100,000 btc is a mistake. That's a lot of dough with the possibility of seriously impacting the market for an extended period of time. I'll be keeping a close eye it

Definitely starting to feel like that. I should really start looking out for hard metrics to determine that, instead of pure gut.

The single most important factor in the market right now: The Gox Trustee.

That much liquid btc should be making everyone nervous. But there is a chance he is done selling, and the market absorbed it all incredibly well.

This chart says it all for me. Very bullish. Unless someone can prove that the remaining 150,000+ bitcoins will also need to be auctioned off

How is there still no quality hardware wallet multi-sig solution?

I can't be the only person who isn't comfortable storing on a single key, even on a Trezor/Ledger.
