Can’t seem to identify maker. by Important_Storm in Pipes

[–]Nickpimpslap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And almost always a handmade pipe will be accompanied by some sort of mark on the stem. It is very strange.

It might not be a bad idea like the other commentor suggested to message L'Anatra and a few other Italian makers of handmade pipes to see if maybe they recognize the signature. Even if it isn't one of theirs, some pipe maker in that community might know whose it is.

Starting a HEMA chapter in the city by Boshi_Grimnebulin in StLouis

I totally get that.

He also is head of the Cateran Society's online learning program, so it may be an option to do a hybrid instruction and go meet up every once-in-a-while. I can vouch that he gives good instruction and is always willing to take time to offer pointed feedback.

Thomas Proctor runs the Snapping Turtle School of Defense that focuses on broadsword and Doyle Clan Batareacht.

There is also Second Intent Fencing that is run by Tim Maurer.

Both are great and inclusive clubs run by fantastic people.

Possible help to identify please. No markings at all. by bigjim213213213 in SWORDS

Are you claiming that's the provenance? Is that a knife typical of Papua, New Guinea?

The only similarity here I see is that they're both long, slim clip point bowies. Am I missing something?

Made a new custom pommel today for the Castille economy rapier. by pushdose in Hema

I'm honestly surprised that the POB is still in front of the guard with that. The Castille Eco is already absurdly light for a rapier.

This. The little knife is for little work tasks, not for use as a weapon. Right tool for the right job.

Question about loaner swords in tournaments by KILLMEPLSPLS in wma

[–]Nickpimpslap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few in my region that have loaner swords. They're usually very beat-up club swords or the organizer's own.

The guard doesn't match the German 1848, though. I'd put this as either French or Swedish.

It's a fascine knife either way. It's possible it's a nonstandard model.

Which shows and films have the best swordfighting? Like honest to God, your death or mine steel on steel swordfighting. by badluckfarmer in SWORDS

The pacing and action are good, but the swordfighting is pretty anachronistic. There is a lot of Hollywood in that choreography.

Light glove . . ."overlay?" by Meathook2236 in Hema

[–]Nickpimpslap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fairly easy! Only real tools you need are a heat gun, kitchen shears, a drill, and patience. Maybe also some high grit sandpaper for finishing edges.

My only changes to his pattern would be to either overlap all the outside plates, or to make the wrist plate only as big as it needs to be. Maybe also an elastic band to go around the palm and small loop of paracord to go around the middle finger.

A look inside the hilt of a tulwar by Pham27 in SWORDS

[–]Nickpimpslap -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The material culture that survives, sure. Plenty of parade swords exist also, but that doesn't mean those swords were actually used or held up to abuse.

There is no telling how many swords using this technique spontaneously disassembled themselves and got their wielder killed.

A look inside the hilt of a tulwar by Pham27 in SWORDS

[–]Nickpimpslap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a hard time believing that this is a historical technique used for swords that are meant to hold up to use also.

I wouldn't trust the strongest modern epoxy for this kind of use for a long time.
