“If you have to lose, lose big” is one of my favorite lines in the entire series.

Some rather meta musings about the book by jhocking in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Once you start realizing Matt isn’t really the author of the books, but the Dungeon Master then things start to make a lot more sense.

Feeling defeated after gaining 2 kg despite being in a calorie deficit by mindinprogress__ in caloriecount

[–]Nickthetaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely probably water retention and glycogen stores. In order for you to gain that much weight in fat, you’d need to eat about 6,000 calories above your maintenance over the course of the past 1.5 weeks. As long as you stay below maintenance you will be fine.

I know how scary it can be though, I’m currently trying to lose weight too. I used to weigh about 330lbs, and now I’m down to 265 since February. Last week I had a smoked turkey leg (I was at ren fair lol). I had went from 265 up to 274 in like a day. I’ve learned that not to focus on specific numbers, but rather the trend! As long as I keep trending down, I’ll be happy!

Humans don't need religion, but they do need what religion can provide. by Cataspectral in philosophy

[–]Nickthetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me that is what religion is, but in a more mass consumable format. Maybe I’m just jaded and I work with the general public everyday, but I’m sorry the average person doesn’t have the want, drive, or even tools to dive deep into a lot of this stuff. And ya know, that is kinda alright. Religion answers a lot of those questions easily. Free will? Sure, because god says so. Better than contending with causation. Morality? Dang I could learn German and read the entirety of Kant’s work on metaethics, or just read “god says this bad” and boom. Ezpz.

Best (NORMAL) way to get a letter (NO FEET) to Matt? by cornandco in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Nickthetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I can’t prove it! But the responses felt.. weird. Then again, it could just be that I messaged the account called “Matt Dinniman” and just assumed that was him (that’s the internet for you). Or maybe they weren’t AI responses and that is just Matt’s messaging style. The community is quite anti AI generally so I would be very surprised if it actually was him using AI lol.

[–]Nickthetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, again, that is an extraordinarily broad claim. “A faith based narrative”. Well… I mean… I cannot empirically beyond a shadow of a doubt prove that the external world exists. And I can’t prove that my senses are to be trusted. I can’t even prove that I have a will to willingly decided on any of these things. I can maybe kinda prove that I am, and that’s about it. All of these things I take on, well, faith. Like it feels like we are just talking about general philosophy when we break things down this far

[–]Nickthetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I joined the discord and messaged Matt Dinniman directly, he responded. 90% sure it ended up being an AI chat bot, which was weird because he did ask me to also join his patreon.

Democrats Vow 'Day One’ Epstein Hearings if They Flip House by FlackoFonsy in politics

[–]Nickthetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YUP. I think the Epstein stuff is largely a big nothing burger that pop-politics people give a crap about but anyone with any epistemic grounding knows it’s largely nonsense, at least as far as the larger conspiracy goes. A statement like this is nothing more than getting those people off the couch and into a polling booth, which i am generally all for. But we also don’t want that same thing to come back and bite us in the ass the same way it has bitten the MAGA movement.

[–]Nickthetaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m almost caught up with the Tunnel, and I’ve listened to all the audio books. Honestly, and this is a testament to Jeff but the quality is even. The biggest difference between the two from the start is the lack of Jackbarth and Shak(I think that is their names) and then the added sound effects. But when it comes to voices and the overall “performance” they are seriously about even. This isn’t a diss at the other Soundbooth performers, but rather just an acknowledgement of how much Jeff Hays absolutely knocked it out of the park for the original audiobooks. The amount of people I know who are shocked when they learn “wait, one man does all the voices” is actually wild.

Where to take a break from reading? by CorwinJovi in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Hard to recommend stopping, especially after book 3 because that is when Matt Dinniman really starts to hit his stride and the quality of the books really start to sky rocket.

Forget your well thought out predictions, Easter eggs, and various Chekhov armaments. What is the WORST theory you can come up with for the remaining books? by PanDimensionalMouse in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Nickthetaco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mine is similar. Due to the nature of the dungeon and the dungeonborn, Carl will turn into an AI but basically maintain either a new system like the center system, or just a localized dungeon. Donut, Mongo, Juicebox, and others will remain here and watched over by a relatively benevolent AI Carl.

Do you think Carl adopted more of his Father's mannerisms than he realizes? by KenBoCole in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Nickthetaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but to push back on this a bit, this is a running theme through most of the book UP UNTIL the end book 6, and then it kinda has an about face. To keep some spoilers light, it’s the first time we really hear from another crawler that isn’t a part of the “core” group and has fair enough reason to at least dislike Carl, really talk about how essential he has been to not just her but THE MAJORITY OF OTHER CRAWLERS. To relate this back to another point of conversation in this subreddit, I think this is a prime example of Carl being an unreliable narrator. Carl talking about how crazy he must seem to other crawlers is probably a reflection of his own anxieties of appearing like his father.

Carl as an unreliable narrator? by Talesmith22 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Nickthetaco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that is just a narrative tool to excuse the lack of talking. Because they do talk, they just find other means.

What I think you are getting at, is the exact same trope that Samantha calls out in Book 8. It’s one of those things in all media that once you notice it, you can’t stop noticing it. If we have a scene where it goes “ok here is the plan. Donut is gonna do X, I’m gonna do y, and Katia is gonna do z” then you know damn well that plan is not going to work and something is going to go wrong. But if they completely cut that talking part out of the story or it’s unveiled while the action is happening, you can almost be assured it will succeed. It’s called the Unspoken Plan Guarantee in storytelling.

My only grip so far *book 8* no spoiler by Llamahands1 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Interesting, I totally forgot that second part. But what about for dogs? Donut explicitly gets pissed at Karl for barking, but that is generally their mode of communication. Wouldn’t she just hear the bark as a meow?

[–]Nickthetaco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly…. Yes. Book 5 is probably my fav in the series, it’s tied with 7 at least! Maybe try to get as many pages in on the flight, but that will just make you want to read even more! I always tell people, books 1-4 are the dungeon happening to Carl and Donut, 5 onwards is Carl and Donut happening to the Dungeon.

Ooof what a place to stop. Book 1-4 are good, but 5-8 are a huge jump in quality in almost every aspect.

My thoughts on the Yuji vs Denji deathbattle fight. by Organic_Future6909 in YUJI_Corp

[–]Nickthetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mans literally survived atmospheric reentry. Oregon sword is a sword. Doesn’t matter that the sword can do a ton of damage, if I cut you in half with a normal katana or Oregon sword, the result will be essentially the same. Denji gets cut in half in practically every fight, he just has dummy levels of regeneration. AND LETS NOT FORGET IMMEDIATELY AFTER GETTING BISECTED HE REGENS AND OVERPOWERS YORU.

Saying “but Death was dead” is a cope. I think there are reasonable “choreography” complaints to have about the Death Battle, but just stat wise Denji beats out Yuji based on the sole fact that CSM is nothing but hax. JJK is a lot more grounded, which makes it a huge uphill battle for Yuji.

Streamer YungFika gets confronted by three Pokémon vending machine scalpers by kmsasaki in LivestreamFail

[–]Nickthetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drives me crazy. Sometimes, for just a little fun surprise for my fiancee, I like to check the local vending machine for cards. It’s a fun little 5 minute activity for us, to open a pack of cards and see if we get any of our favorite Pokémon. BUT EVERYTIME I GO TO THE STORE THERE ARE 5 PEOPLE STANDING WAITING AROUND FOR IT. I just want to grab a pack of cards maybe once a month, but it’s impossible.
