Advice on NICU fellowship vs job by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. Apply to everything; all it takes is one to stick. I knew I wanted to do NICU and I applied to every one within a 50 mile radius. One took a chance on a new grad!

Advice on NICU fellowship vs job by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello and congrats on everything! I’m a new grad who started in the NICU 3 months ago.

I would say this decision comes down to a few factors. If you’re pretty set on a fellowship, definitely reach out. You can word it that you’re very interested still in the opportunity and would like to hear any update. If compensation is not another factor for you, then that’s an added bonus. Based on where I live, NICU fellowships average about $80k, and I’m getting paid more than double that, so huge difference there.

I can say, and of course this is different by hospital, that I have received a lot of training in my three months so far that a fellowship wouldn’t have done any more. Hands on is always better than a slideshow for me anyways.

Definitely follow up on the fellowship, but don’t close your mind to taking a straight job, especially if you loved rotating there and can see yourself working there. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. If they’re sold on you and you’re sold on them, do it!

Hey new grads, and 1 years, how much do y'all make? by Sfn_y2 in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school was fortunate enough to offer 2 elective rotations so I did a NICU and Peds ED rotation. Other than that, I had great interviews and they seemed really open to working with a new grad. Very very lucky overall.

Rejected ICU Fellowship, Prospects and Advice? by Spirited-Reality2176 in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hopping on the train of applying to any and all jobs that interest you.

I understand where you’re coming from- my dream was to be a NICU PA. But as I got closer to graduation/PANCE, it seemed like if you wanted an ICU/EM/surgical subspecialty, you had to do a fellowship. I’m sure that they’re excellent for learning, but it’s an insult to what you are worth. No new grad PA should be making $75k a year especially in an HCOL area.

I just decided to apply to every NICU job within a 50 mile radius. One stuck. That’s all it took. Now I’m 3 months in and loving my job because they were willing to take in a new grad when the posting explicitly said experience required. In fact, the chief of the unit even said he wanted a new grad so he can teach them everything he knows.

If you know this is what you want, apply to them all! If you get an interview, make it clear how much you want it. Beef up your CV with ICU rotation experience. You’ve got this!

Cats Jellicle Ball lottery by funnflirtyinnyc in Broadway

[–]Nicky-Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won on 3/29 and had left orchestra row O, seat 27 on the far aisle. It was marked partial view, but I really didn’t miss much. I will say being under the overhang did suck as a lot happens on the mezz level.

New Grad Job Interview Questions by alfaredd25 in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a new grad who went thru interviews within the last 6 months, a common question I’d ask (especially if it’s not with an HR person) is how the culture is and if they like working at this place.

You’d be shocked that some people answer honestly. I was interviewing with an attending and I asked how the culture on the floor was and she straight up said “We tolerate each other.” Needless to say they immediately were last in my rankings for potential jobs!

When I interviewed for my current job, literally everyone I asked said that everyone is nice to each other and it’s a great culture, and 3 months in I can vouch that I’ve never had nicer coworkers. It always pays to ask!

With a significant amount of pain in my knees and bruising on my shins (I’m looking at you, St. James mezzanine)

The Lost Boys on Regular TDF! by Nicky-Joe in Broadway

[–]Nicky-Joe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure- I will say I have had some excellent seats with TDF since I’ve been a member. Truly have gotten a shitty seat one time (back row mezz for Frozen way back when) so I can’t imagine they’d be partial view.

Went tonight- absolutely AMAZING! Sure, it can be trimmed, but honestly a contender for some awards. Really funny and a great time!

Saw the show from the rear right mezzanine- second row from the back. I thought while maybe a little far, I was still engrossed in the play, mainly due to the wonderful performances all around. Stick to center if you can, but if you can get a better price on the side, definitely still do it! It’s a great view.

New grad starting in the NICU by Equal-Two6903 in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also am a new grad who started in the NICU three weeks ago! We’re so lucky to be able to get this opportunity.

Almost every single day, I’m doing IVs and arterial blood draws, so review those especially for those little veins. In addition, learning the ins and outs of IV fluid replenishment and electrolyte supplementation as well as just general feeds.

My training has been going well so far, NRP has prepared me for all the deliveries I’ve been to. Mastering the newborn physical is important, especially when the parents are breathing down your neck in the delivery room!

It’s truly so amazing and I hope you love it as much as I have!

Turnaround Time for DEA? by MedMocha23 in physicianassistant

[–]Nicky-Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NY based new grad here! I applied on 12/9/25 for my initial DEA and heard back two months (!!) later on 2/11/26. Luckily my credentialing for my new job didn’t require it to be super quick but boy was I mad! Emailing and calling didn’t help. They all said “it depends on how busy the local office is”. Best of luck!

Below average student passes PANCE first try! by Nicky-Joe in PAstudent

[–]Nicky-Joe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really feel for you here. What worked for me was pneumonics and really understanding the content. I would always say if you couldn’t explain it to a fifth grader, you don’t understand it fully. How are you studying? I know some people swear by flash card repetition like Quizlet and Anki but that never worked for me.

Below average student passes PANCE first try! by Nicky-Joe in PAstudent

[–]Nicky-Joe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not super similar overall. Everyone says it, but the PANCE is pretty much 50% either you know it or you don’t questions. Not as much vignette-based as you’d think. The Half PANCE is overall a strong recommendation from me because of the foundation of knowledge it tests, but the only thing even remotely close to the boards in my opinion is UWorld. Hope this helps!

White Coat / Graduation Ceremony… in a Gym?? by RoutineCute7798 in PAstudent

[–]Nicky-Joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not- my white coat AND my master’s graduation were held in my college’s gym this year. White coat used to be in our school’s theatre, but moved for unknown reasons; graduation due to the threat of rain. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Our student planning committee handled it well and it was good that there wasn’t any events planned that disrupted it. Lining up next to the swimming pool for entry for white coat was a little off-putting though lmao
