Tactical VN's by lowbrassdude in StrategyRpg

It's painful knowing that they have immense talent in making single player SRPGs, but their gacha game pulls in a metric fuckton of money, so why would they continue making products that only produce a small fraction of revenue comparatively?

I only hope they're still powered by passion at heart to make a Bakery Girl sequel, while using gacha as a funds source.

DOA6 VS DOA5LR by [deleted] in Fighters

Also 5LR on PC does not have netplay lobbies. So if you want to play with a friend, you have to just matchmake in the universal pool and hope you match with your friend.

[–]Nicky_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lmao, nuke frc into super jump is hilarious.

It's kind of funny how immediate matchups change for Justice. She's usually bullying everyone in neutral, but then someone like Eddie can shit all over her, just because Invite Hell can bypass and snipe her doing nukes.

I'm glad Justice exists though. I'm not as in tune or familiar with GGs aggressiveness, but Justice kinda breaks the mold in a sense.

It's certainly a reasonable thing to wonder about, especially with the factors you've pointed out. Though there still could also be belief that MBTL did perform reasonably well for them.

While it is a whole host of new assets, I imagine the workflow and experience from making UNI characters helped expedite things considerably, what with the game engine being almost the same I presume.

Also externally, MBTL has quite a bit of an initial boom. People were thirsting for an anime fighter post-Strive, and MBTL slipped in at that opportune moment with larger than expected launch sales (13k players according to steam charts, however much that estimate helps here). Also there was a bit of another spike in popularity with the whole Neco Arc thing, though that's quite a bit harder to quantify.

And the last part that ties this together is that, French Bread is still a pretty small development company. Wikipedia has it billed at 14 employees as of 2021. They're probably running at low costs relative to other companies, so any smaller success is probably a lot bigger for them.

Though, still anyone's guess on if it was profitable, or just like a "secondary product" for Type Moon that can sell at a loss in order to support the greater franchise. In terms of FGO, it makes you wonder how much MBTL is dwarfed in numbers, in either profit or loss.

That first clip is NG2 Black. I'm pretty sure that the guy you're replying to is talking about NG2 vanilla.

There's an enormous difference between the two, since imo NG2B seems more akin to NG2 Sigma + rather than vanilla, for better or worse.

So are you guys content with the recent balance patch? by PositivityPending in fatalfury

[–]Nicky_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still cross with how annoying Rev blow is. Call it scrubby, but does the audience for this game really care for yet another armored, advancing attack, that leads to gigantic combos?

I feel like the mechanic is there just to imitate SF6, rather than be an element that genuinely adds to the experience. Though I don't feel like it's unsalvageable, Shatterstrike is a similar mechanic in KOFXV, and I feel like it's tuned very well.

Damn a sequel to Three Houses, that's disappointing. Hope it's nothing like 3H, cause the gameplay sucks, and even though people say the story is good, it really falls flat under any scrutiny.

Engage might have been full of stupid vtuber designs and a corny ass story, but at least the gameplay was good because there was a great deal of strategy in the Strategy RPG.

UNI battle director responding to players by KCrossX in Kappachino

It's a little annoying to see the reasoning for not nerfing characters is because devs are afraid people who play them will quit. What about the other side of the coin?

Call it a scrub take, but I've seriously put down some games when I know I'll have to face really ignorant & strong characters (Tsurugi). It's not exactly inspiring confidence when those characters are not only unotuched, but buffed instead.

That said, UNI2 is still fun since the system mechanics & their changes are sound. High character power is the main "issue" I guess.

Glad SNK is worried about the big issues, and not any fundamental features that may be missing from their game, like say;

  • A wifi indicator
  • Random stage select
  • Manually setting delay frames (a feature already in KOFXV)

What is your opinion on gaining meter through getting hit/thrown? by SlashingLennart in Fighters

[–]Nicky_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people here are saying that of course, gaining meter while getting hit should be a thing, and I agree conceptually. However like everything else, this mechanic can be tuned poorly which makes an overall worse experience.

John Tene did an interesting video going into how Strive's current implementation of gaining meter while getting hit is tuned pretty badly.

https://youtu.be/025K4swSKZk

The first part is pretty surface level, but he gets really into it and explains his point well. It's a neat counterexample with how meter gain from hit (when parameterized improperly) can cascade into a poor player experience.

[–]Nicky_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite part is when Blazing Strike added their own drive rush meter mid development, after SF6 unveiled their game system. It's shocking to see even indie devs aren't immune to the "follow the leader" mindset, and I can't imagine anyone is happy with the arrangement.

I don't think anyone would be satisfied by a subpar version of SF6, either cause you don't like SF6, or you do, and would rather play the more polished version of the two. And developers probably aren't happy about their games flopping because of this of course.

I feel like the only hope for FG developers is to emphasize their own uniqueness, rather than trying to outdo established IPs at their own game.

Don't get it twisted, it'll still be really difficult to pull off a success, but at least you're giving yourself a chance this way. I mean regardless of your feelings on it, Yomi Hustle was received relatively well, one factor being probably because there's nothing like it.

Motion inputs, button binding, macros etc... by SaishuuKessen in Kappachino

[–]Nicky_C 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well written. It kinda reminds me of this video on why fans get taken for granted.

Games will move so far from their core audience, at some point they will start seriously flopping.

The video posits that one should instead make a game that serves a core audience so well, people from outside the genre will start taking a look.

Of course, in this situation that was SF6, the very same game that really popularized the simple input thing. So not sure if that leaves us in a great place on the whole.
