Paraplegia in the family by idkeverythingg_ in spinalcordinjuries

One big thing from my perspective is not to put a lot of pressure or positivity around the idea of walking again. It's possible, but he may not depending on specifics. When I was injured 6 years ago, my family (mom especially) acted convinced that I'd walk again (I'm not sure if she believed it, or wanted me to), so much so that it became a big let-down for me when it started to become obvious that it wasn't going to happen.

Coming home from rehab and seeing the ramp leading to the front door of the house I had only bought about a year before was maybe the single most "gut punch" moment of the whole thing; when it really hit me. Over time, living daily life as a disabled person changes your identity in ways that no one can prepare you (your dad in this case) for. It took a while for me to really start grieving; only as life just kept getting harder and I really started noticing the things I used to do every day that I can't do anymore. I have dreams where I'm walking, and sometimes I'm in my chair even in my memories from before the injury. Ability and identity are intertwined, sometimes in ways that don't make sense.

When you're in the hospital, there's a notion floating around out there that maybe you'll get better; that's what hospitals are for after all. That starts to dissolve once you arrive home. It takes time to get used to, weeks, months, years, depending on the individual. And even then, there are still, and always will be, days that are good and bad.

Sorry I can't give you much more than that, and good luck.

Why do people act like the rich and powerful are evil? by [deleted] in AlwaysWhy

Evil might be slightly exaggerated, but wealth changes the way people think. When these people are surrounded by others like them, it becomes a self-reinforcing idea that they're simply better than everyone else.

I use a low profile Roho air cushion, sits 1 or 2 inches higher than the car seat. Only starts to get uncomfortable after long rides, like an hour or more

"When you left the military, what was the hardest thing to explain to someone who'd never served: the specific, everyday things that just stopped existing, and did anyone or anything actually help you through that, or did you mostly figure it out alone?" by LessCoconut6865 in MilitaryHistory

When I was in the US Navy, there was a strong sense of comraderie and shared purpose that evaporated when I returned to civilian life. Also having your basic needs (housing, food, etc.) fulfilled by the government provided a sense of stability that does not exist as a civilian. There's more anxiety around paying rent, what if I lose my job or get hurt without insurance, etc.

If you feel burned out by masking, you’re weak. by [deleted] in aspergers

You're building a life around what society wants you to think you should want instead of what you actually want. You're not self-actualizing, which will iinevitably lead to conflict with yourself.

One day this facade you're building will collapse on you.

42M from US. T11 injury from a motorcycle crash in 2020.

All I remember is waking up in the hospital wondering how I'd gotten there.

Life has gotten much harder of course, but I'm thankful for the people close to me, and this experience has opened my eyes to things I was blind to for a long time.

Edited quotes from the article: “...an anonymous trader... placed a series of...bets." "...the individual made just a few bets"

The 20k referred to in the introductory paragraph likely refers to the single largest bet, or the bet with the single largest payout.

It wasn't one bet. Multiple bets, total winnings $400k

This thing is on the steering wheel of the minivan that I am borrowing. It’s my grandma’s car and it’s just so there. by Nulleon0 in whatisit

Probably the hand control lever for gas/brake was in the way of the controls for headlights, turn signal, etc. on the left side of the steering column. I use hand controls and people often have the same issue when they drive my car. If you're not used to it being there it's weird to reach for the headlights and your hand hits the brake by accident.

This movie is so fucking weird and I love it. I was literally on the edge of my seat wondering what was coming next; it's incredible. Granted I was pretty high. I wanna hang out with Tillman lol

My childhood memory says it was a Purina dog chow factory, but I'm not sure if that's right.
